PLAY donates checks to Alpine youth sports
The Alpine Sun
ALPINE - Cheerful representatives from Alpine's youth sports groups
accepted checks totaling $1,500 on March 8 from Park Land for Alpine
Youth (PLAY).
The ceremony was held under sunny skies outside the
Alpine Mountain Empire Chamber of Commerce office at 2157 Alpine
Blvd. in Alpine.
PLAY board members Chuck Taylor and Diane Casey handed
out donations of $250 each to Alpine American Little League, Alpine
Youth Soccer Organization, Alpine Eagles Lacrosse, Alpine Girls
Softball, Alpine Mountaineers and Alpine Pony League.
“Those little boxes that take your quarters and your
dimes and your nickels (at local businesses) are how we got here,”
Taylor told the group.
He thanked Albertsons, True Value Hardware, California
Bank & Trust and Alpine Tobacco for their help with the collection
and donation program.
Cyndy Walker and Jacqui Brown-Schmidt of Alpine Eagles
Lacrosse said they were thrilled and excited when they heard the
checks were coming for equipment and scholarships to help all
children play the game.
“We're growing rapidly,” Walker said. “To keep up with
that financially is tough for us.”
A representative of state Sen. Joel Anderson's office,
Lizzy Blumberg, presented each of the youth groups and businesses
with certificates for outstanding community support and for serving
the youth of Alpine.
Taylor said PLAY will continue to raise money for all
the youth leagues, but the organization's focus has had to shift
since it started two years ago.
The original goal was to build sports facilities for
Alpine youth sports. Taylor said the nation's economic downturn and
environmental concerns about potential Alpine facility locations
have made that too difficult for now.
