Blackwater withdraws plans for camp in Potrero  
     Blackwater has backed out of its plan to build a private military and law enforcement training camp on an 824-acre former chicken ranch in Potrero, adjacent to national forest and wilderness areas. Formal withdrawal of the project application ends a year-and-a-half long battle between the private military contractor and residents who mobilized widespread opposition to the controversial proposal.  

Court says parents do not have right to home school children     
     The February 28 decision made by the Appellate Court, attacking home schooling as a viable source of education for children, has been the source of buzz all about town. The ruling states that parents do not have the constitutional right to home school their own children.
 

CWA approves funding of recycled water retrofits  
     The San Diego County Water Authority board authorized an agreement with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to provide financial incentives to public agencies for modifying irrigation plumbing to accept recycled water. The SDCWA's Feb. 28 board approval authorizes an agreement that will pass incentive funding to participating CWA member agencies and the public agency customers of those member agencies.   

Oct. 9 trial date set in BSR murder
An October 9 trial date was set last week for Robert Steven Carson, who is accused of killing Brittany Hart, whose body was found upside down in a plastic recycling container in the Buckman Springs area.  

Local student awarded the Violet Richardson Award
Lourd Kettoola, of Granite Hills High School, was honored by the Soroptimist Club of Alpine, for her volunteer efforts at a dinner held Feb. 20. Each year the Soroptimist Club of Alpine honors a young woman between the ages of 14 and 17 who volunteers in her community or school. 
 
Designer selected for Viejas expansion  
Viejas Enterprises today announced the selection of Marnell Corrao Associates, designers, developers, and builders of some of the world’s premier destination resorts, including Bellagio and Wynn Resort in Las Vegas, to design one of the largest resort projects in California — the $800 million Viejas Hotel & Casino Resort near San Diego.
