Hula with the Alpine VFW
     ALPINE — The Alpine VFW will host the Ladies' Auxiliary 9th Annual Luau on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 1 to 5 p.m.
     Participants will don their favorite Hawaiian print clothing and join the fun and food with music performed by The Alright Guys. Admission is by a donation of $6 and all proceeds will benefit veterans and families in need. Tickets are on sale now in the canteen.

Kiwanis serves Labor Day breakfast
     POTRERO — The Potrero/Tecate Kiwanis will host a Labor Day breakfast on Saturday, Sept. 3 and Sunday, Sept 4 from 7 to 10:30 a.m. The breakfast takes place at Farmer Brown's Christmas Trees, next to Potrero County Park.
     Participants can get all you can eat pancakes, sausage, fruit cups, juice and coffee for just $5 per adult and $3 per child. This fund-raising event benefits the Kiwanis as well as members of the Society of Creative Anachronism.

Alpine Artist’s Association meeting
     ALPINE — The newly formed Alpine Artist's Association will be meeting the fourth Tuesday of every month at 4 p.m.

Descanso town hall movies resume

     DESCANSO — The Descanso Town
Hall’s Friday Night Film series, now in its ninth season, will resume on Aug. 19 for four weeks at the Descanso Town Hall, 24536 Viejas Grade Road.
     Suitable for the entire family, this series presents films of yesteryear. The opening program on Aug. 19 will be Lawless Range, starring John Wayne as a young cowboy who helps organize the local citizens against an outlaw gang that is attempting to drive them from their homes.
     Other movies include Comin’ Round the Mountain on Aug. 26, Toll of the Desert on Sept. 2 and My Pal Trigger on Sept. 9. Each program will include a chapter from the Republic serial The Painted Stallion. Ticket holders will be eligible for free door prizes, to be given out during the intermission.
     Admission is a $2 donation for adults and $1 for children 12 and under. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the program will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. 
Fresh hot popcorn, sodas, candy and other theater refreshments will be available at bargain prices. 
     All proceeds will benefit the Descanso Town Hall Association and the Alpine Amigos 4H Horse Project
.

CCT performs Beauty and the Beast
     LA MESA — Christian Community Theater enchants audiences with its production of Beauty and the Beast. The show is being presented on the Mt. Helix Amphitheater in La Mesa.
     The show opened on Aug. 4 and upcoming performance dates are Aug. 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26 and 27 at 8 p.m.
     All seats are reserved and ticket prices are $12 for children 12 and under and $17-$34 for adults, with discounts available for military, seniors and groups of 15 or more. For tickets one may phone 588-0206 or (800) 696-1929.

Alpine Community Center hosts dance
     ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center will host the first ACC Country Dance Fund-raiser on Aug. 20 at 6 p.m. this is the first year for this event and officials are hoping that it will become an annual affair.
     The evening will feature a full dinner as well as a no-host bar a silent auction.
     Tickets are $30 per attendee and are available at the ACC office. For more information or to donate items for the silent auction please contact the center at 445-7330.

Celebrate a century with LMVA
     DESCANSO — The U.S. Forest Service was established in 1905- this year, 2005, marks 100 years of service. The Cleveland National Forest in conjunction with the Laguna Mountain Volunteer Association (LMVA) will celebrate the Forest Services centennial by hosting Laguna Mountain Annual Living History Event on Sept. 3 and 4.
     LMVA will again re-enact turn of the century life on the mountain.
     Those interested in guided tours should expect to see re-enactments of life of Native Americans, mountain men, cowboys, and a visiting farm family from Imperial Valley, the first forest ranger, and a gold miner. Guided tours will be given every hour from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. 
     On Saturday, Sept. 3, visitors will also enjoy mountain folk music with Wakefield's Mountain Revue from 5 to 8 p.m. at our ADA accessible amphitheatre located in the newly remodeled Burnt Rancheria Campground.

Bus schedules available now
     The Alpine Sun’s back-to-school special, the local school bus schedule, is available in the Aug. 18 edition of the newspaper. It may also be obtained at our office, located at 2144 Alpine Blvd.
     The special pullout includes the 2005-’06 Alpine Union School District, Granite Hills High School and Steele Canyon High School bus schedules.
     The Back to School Special is a yearly supplement to The Alpine Sun newspaper.

 Local farmers, artisans sought invited to sell wares at  Alpine Farmer’s Market
     ALPINE — The Alpine Farmer’s Market is looking for local residents who grow their own crops or livestock and have a little surplus to sell at the Farmer’s Market Cooperative in Alpine.
     The market is also looking for local artists and musicians.

Monday Night Car Club show
     PINE VALLEY — Third Run to the Hills presented by The Monday Night Car Club will take place Saturday Aug. 20. Pre-registration is 2-3 p.m., street closed and car show 3-7 p.m.
     Cost is $10 per car pre register now for event t-shirt, raffle ticket and dash plaque to first 200 entries by July 15. Proceeds to benefit scholarship programs, the Mountain Empire Men's Club/MNCC Christmas Drive Trophies and 50/50 raffle.
