Pine Valley Days goes July 29 to 31
     PINE VALLEY — Pine Valley Days will take place July 29-31 in Pine Valley. This yearly event includes a parade and rodeo.
     On Friday the fair will be open from 5-7 p.m. for a barbecue and a live band from 7:30-11 p.m. The parade begins Saturday at 9 a.m. and the rodeo will go all day until 3 p.m. as well as arts and crafts and food in the parking lot. 
     Participants can finish off the evening with live music from 8-11 p.m. Sunday’s schedule has yet to be announced.

VFW to hold Swap Meet
CAMPO — The Campo VFW Post 2080 will hold a Swap Meet Aug.13. Tables are for rent at $5 for vendors.

Transit holds meetings on bus cuts
     The Metropolitan Transit System will be conducting community meeting in East County and rural areas to present and seek feedback on options to adjust rural bus transit services. 
     MTS rural bus services have the highest subsidy per passendger of any MTS service. The purpose of this effort is to adjust service and fare levels to improve the effectiveness, reduce overall subsidies, and increase athe cost efficiency of rural services.
Routes to be considered for adjustment include routes 867, 888, 889, 891, 892 and 894.
     The locations, dates and times for these meetings are as follows:
     Monday Aug. 8, 3:30 p.m. at the Mtn. Empire Community Center, 976 Sheridan Road, Campo.
     Wednesday, Aug. 10, 5:30 p.m. at the Ramona Community Center, 434 Aqua Lane, Ramona.
     Thursday, Aug. 11, 12:30 p.m. at the Borrego Water District, 806 Palm Canyon Dr., Borrego Springs.
     Monday, Aug. 15, 4:30 p.m. at R. Reagan Community Room, 195 E. Douglas Ave., El Cajon.

Descanso town hall movies resume
     DESCANSO — The Descanso Town hall’s Friday Night Film series, now in its ninth season, will resume on Aug. 19 for four weeks at the Descanso Town Hall, 24536 Viejas Grade Road.
     Suitable for the entire family, this series presents films of yesteryear. 
     The opening program on Aug. 19 will be Lawless Range, starring John Wayne as a young cowboy who helps organize the local citizens against an outlaw gang that is attempting to drive them from their homes.
     Other movies include Comin’ Round the Mountain on Aug. 26, Toll of the Desert on Sept. 2 and My Pal Trigger on Sept. 9. 
     Each program will include a chapter from the Republic serial The Painted Stallion. Ticket holders will be eligible for free door prizes, to be given out during the intermission.
     Admission is a $2 donation for adults and $1 for children 12 and under. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the program will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. 
     Fresh hot popcorn, sodas, candy and other theater refreshments will be available at bargain prices. 
     All proceeds will benefit the Descanso Town Hall Association and the Alpine Amigos 4H Horse Project.

Women’s Club holds rummage sale
     ALPINE — The Alpine Woman’s Club will hold a rummage sale on Friday and Saturday, July 29 and 30. The sale will be held in the parking lot and in the clubhouse, located at 2156 Alpine Blvd. from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
     Proceeds from the sale will be used to provide scholarships to local students next June. Throughout the years, fund raising projects such as this rummage sale have allowed the club to provide scholarships totaling over $66,000 to more than 146 students. Last month, six scholarships for $1,000 each were given to outstanding Alpine high school seniors.

Kiwanis Club to host chili cook-off
     ALPINE — The Alpine Kiwanis Club will host its Fourth Annual Chili Cook-off at 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 7, at the Alpine Community Center Park.
     The event will include live music by Hillbilly Noise, entertainment for children, a beer and wine garden, and food sales.
     Proceeds will go to benefit the community center and pre-registration is required.

Western luau and deep pit barbecue dinner
     DESCANSO — Chapel of the Hills will host a Western Luau on Sunday, Aug. 7 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at 25153 Viejas Blvd.
     Participants will spend the afternoon under the shady oaks in Descanso eating Hawaiian style succulent pork with all the fixings. There will be door prizes and a chance to win a free trip to Hawaii. Cost for adults is $7.50, $3.50 for children or $18 for the whole family.

Monday Night Car Club show
     PINE VALLEY — Third Run to the Hills presented by The Monday Night Car Club will take place Saturday Aug. 20. Pre-registration is 2-3 p.m., street closed and car show 3-7 p.m.
     Cost is $10 per car pre register now for event t-shirt, raffle ticket and dash plaque to first 200 entries by July 15. Proceeds to benefit scholarship programs, the Mountain Empire Men's Club/MNCC Christmas Drive Trophies and 50/50 raffle.

Little and junior Alpine misses sought
     ALPINE — The Associate Pageants of Alpine is looking for the next 2005-2006 Little Miss Alpine and Junior Miss Alpine.
     Little Miss Alpine is for girls ages six to eight and Junior Miss Alpine is for girls ages nine to 12.
     Anyone interested please pick up an application at the Alpine Community Center prior to July 30.

Between the Stripes fundraiser for big cats
     ALPINE — The second annual Between the Stripes fundraiser for Lions, Tigers and Bears will take place Oct. 1 from 1 to 5 p.m. Participants will be able to take part in live and silent auction, various activities and of course eat alongside the big cats.
     Money from the event will go to raise funds for a new exercise enclosure. More than $150,000 is needed to pay for the chain link alone to build the 250 by 150 foot enclosure.
     Tickets for Between the Stripes are only available in advance and numbers are limited. Adults are $75 and children under 12 can get in for $25.
