Queen of Angels presents
Summerfest
ALPINE — The Queen of Angels Church will hold its the seventh annual Summerfest, beginning on Friday, June 3 at 5 p.m.
Activities will include a silent auction and spaghetti dinner. Karaoke will be open to all from 7:30 until 9:30. Friday’s event concludes at 10 p.m.
On Saturday, the fun begins at 3 p.m. with a silent auction. Outdoor Mass will be held in the parking lot at 4:00, and a prime rib and chicken dinner will be served from 5:30 until 7:30. After that, guests may dance under the stars to the Queen of Angels’ DJ, and the event closes at 10:30.

Students
hold bash for retiring teacher
ALPINE
— The third grade class at Alpine Elementary invites you
to attend Filipiniana 2005.
The
show will be held in the AES auditorium on Wednesday, June
8. The first show will be at 9:30 a.m., and the evening show
will be at 7:30 p.m.
This
is the thirty-second annual Filipiniana, and it is a very
special one for third grade teacher Inez Maza, who will be
retiring after this school year.
The
show will feature authentic Filipino dances, songs and
costumes.
The
third graders have been working extremely hard in
preparation for the event.
Come
enjoy the show and give Maza a warm goodbye.
Alpine Chorale holds
spring concert
ALPINE — The Alpine Chorale invites its friends and neighbors to attend its Annual Spring Concert at 2 p.m., on Sunday, June 5, at Boulder Oaks Elementary School.
Refreshments will be served.
Essay winner to be
announced during History Days
ALPINE — Prize winners in the Alpine Historical Society's essay contest for third graders will be invited to ride on the society's float in the Viejas Days Parade this September. They'll also win cash prizes and certificates and the three top winners will read their essays aloud for the History Days Celebration on June 4 at the museum. All the winners will be treated to free ice cream sundaes as an extra reward.
The essay committee from the society, headed by Don Tarr, expects to be reading 200 essays during the next week as it chooses the winners.
Alpine History Days is set for June 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 pm. the prizes will be awarded at 12:30 p.m. on the back steps of the Beaty House section of the museum at 2116 Tavern Road. A chili/salad lunch topped off with ice cream sundaes will be available for purchase. The museum will be featuring a special exhibit honoring the late Bea La Force.
Classic Cruise car show
in El Cajon
EL CAJON — The El Cajon Community Development Corporation will host the Cajon Classic Cruise from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Wednesday from May 18 to Sept. 28.
The Cajon Classic Cruise features more than 500 classic, custom and hot rod cars valued at more than $10 million. The free weekly event is centered on East Main Street at Prescott Promenade, just east of the Main and Magnolia intersection downtown El Cajon.
A series of show events are planned, including an Independence Day celebration on June 29; a Salute to the American Hot Dog on July 20; National Night Out on Aug. 3; a VIP Parade on Aug. 24, and a special Halloween Car Show on Oct. 26. Raffle tickets will be sold every Wednesday for a fully restored 1952-1956 Chevron Short Tohkeim 39 gas pump to be given away at the Sept. 28 show.
Celebrate
pioneer past with historian
ALPINE
— The Alpine Historical Society will host the Alpine
History Days celebration on Saturday, June 4 from 11 a.m.
until 2 p.m.
Bring
the whole family to celebrate Alpine’s pioneer past with
good food, entertainment, historical displays and a Fun Jump
for the children. This year will feature a special exhibit
about the life and literary works of Alpine historian
Beatrice La Force and her Sky Mesa Ranch.
See
the exhibit of photographs and memorabilia from Alpine’s
early school days in the back of the Nichols House - the old
schoolhouse built in 1886. The event will also feature live
music, a silent auction and the third-grade essay contest
winners.

Homemakers offer best deals in town
CAMPO — The new Mountain Empire Homemakers thrift store, located at 987 Sheridan Rd. across from the Campo Senior Center, is regularly open Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Chapel of the Hills to host camp
out
Chapel of the Hills Church will
host a camp out from 2 p.m. Friday to 2 p.m. Sunday, June
3-5 at the Wooded Hills Group Camp. The area offers great
hiking, pine and oak trees and mountain bike trails. The
trip offers a variety of activities, meals, and music around
the campfire. The cost is $35 per site.

its annual rummage sale this Saturday, June 4, frm 8 a.m.,

will be plenty of household items, clothing, toys, and
furniture — and prices are guaranteed to be set low.
Project C.A.R.E. helps those who
live alone
Project C.A.R.E. may be able to
help those who live alone or those concerned about a senior
who lives alone.
This is a community program that
involves community service agencies and local businesses in
providing services to any senior or disabled person.
Programs include RUOK, Postal Alert, Gatekeeper, Vial of
Life, YANA (You Are Not Alone), Safe Return and more. These
free programs help maintain people in their homes.

Spirit choir accepting new members
ALPINE — Alpine children between
the ages of six and 13 are invited to join the Spirit Choir.
Directed by Joanne Ginkel, with
husband Ludwig Ginkel as production manager, the youngsters
meet every Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the Alpine
Community Church. There they learn lively new fun songs and
rehearse older ones.
The choir sings about once a month
and on special holiday occasions during the church’s

Kindergarten
enrollment is underway
ALPINE — Enrollment for
kindergarten 2005-06 began April 11. Enrollment packets are
available at Creekside Early Learning Center and at all
Alpine elementary schools, the Alpine Union School District
office, Viejas Indian School, and Joan MacQueen Middle
School.
Children born on or before Dec. 2, 2000 are eligible to
attend kindergarten.
To register your child for
kindergarten, you must provide a certified copy of the
child’s birth certificate, a physical dated after April 2,
2005, up-to-date immunization records, and current proof of
residence such as an electric bill, propane bill, water bill
or tax bill.

Soccer sign-ups
come to a close
ALPINE — AYSO Alpine Region 295 invites all girls and boys
from ages four through 18 years old to sign up for the
coming soccer season.
The
remaining sign-up date is Saturday, June 4 at Alpine
Elementary School from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Registration
for this season will close July 1 and the fee is $85 with
multiple player discounts offered to families registering
more than one player. The fee includes 16 weeks of soccer,
full uniforms, individual and team pictures, an
action-packed yearbook and, best of all, no fund raising is
required.
A
parent or guardian must be present at registration and
should provide the name and telephone numbers for their
insurance carrier, doctor and a contact in case of
emergency. A birth certificate is required if your child did
not play last year.

East County NRA meets in Alpine
ALPINE – The East County NRA is now holding meetings in Alpine at the Bread Basket restaurant. Regular meetings will now be held the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m.
The chapter would like to extend an invitation to NRA members and people who would like to become members. Bob Maupin at Hi Pass sports will accept applications from new members and those wishing to become active in the NRA.
American Cancer Society hosts
relay race
EL CAJON — The American Cancer Society will host the Relay for Life in East County on June 25 and 26 at Granite Hills High School, 1719 E. Madison Ave., in El Cajon.
The relay is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of the American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people take turns running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one member on the track at all times. This year’s event will run from
10 p.m. to 10 a.m.

Campo trail ride
CAMPO
— Everyone is invited to attend a trail ride sponsored by
St. Vincent de Paul Villages on June 18.
The
riders will leave Rancho San Vincente, 2155 Campo Truck
Trail, in Campo, at 9 a.m. and will return the same evening
for a barbecue. A $25 donation includes a half-day trail
ride and dinner. There will be a jackpot sorting event on
Saturday and another on Sunday. The sorting events have an
additional cost.
Horse
accommodations are available. Dogs are not allowed, and each
rider will be required to fill out a release form. Please

cancer cut-a-thon
ALPINE
— Renee’s Uptown Salon on Alpine Boulevard, will host a
cut-a-thon to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, June 11.
There
is a minimum $20 donation. There will be a silent auction
and door prizes. No
haircut is necessary.
