Alpine Massage Therapy opens its doors
     ALPINE Alpine Massage Therapy announces its grand opening, June 23 and 25, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 1347 Tavern Rd. suite 17-B.
     The opening will give visitors a chance to meet a therapist, tour the suite and learn about the different services offered. There will also be a prize raffle both days and refreshments will be served.
     Alpine Massage Therapy offers many services, including clinical therapeutic massage, aromatherapy and acupuncture. Auto injury, medical and worker’s compensation insurance is accepted.

Jacob to host several events
     San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob will open the first County Cool Zone of 2005 Thursday, June 23, at 11:30 a.m. at the Salvation Army Senior Nutrition Center, 101 E. Main St. in El Cajon.
     Cool Zones are existing public buildings that seniors can visit to seek shelter from the summer heat, meet new people, save money on air conditioning bills and help the region conserve energy. Volunteers who can help enroll seniors in money-saving programs will staff some Cool Zones.
     Jacob will also attend a summer barbecue at Edgemoor Hospital in Santee Thursday, June 23 at 4:30 p.m. She will present certificates to caregivers and discuss progress of the new Edgemoor facility, which is current under construction on 30 acres of the County’s existing 326-acre Edgemoor property.
     On Friday, June 24, Jacob will host a morning coffee discussion for constituents in Spring Valley at 8:30 a.m. at Casa de Oro Travel, 10630 Willie Baker Way.

Movies by the Lake kicks off season
     SANTEE Santee Lakes kicks off the 2005 Movies by the Lake with the classic musical Grease on Friday, June 24. Bring a blanket and stake out that front row spot before the show.
    
The summer 2005 Movies by the Lake schedule is as follows: June 24, Grease; July 8, Shrek 2; July 22, Shark Tale; August 5, Racing Stripes; Aug. 19, The Sponge Bob Square Pants Movie.
     The movies are shown at Santee Lake’s Lake 5 Amphitheater. The Grease performance will feature a classic car show beginning at 4 p.m. For all movie nights, US 95.7 FM will start playing music at 6 p.m., and Santee Lakes staff will start children’s games and contests at 7 p.m. The movie will start at 8 p.m. or when the sun goes down.
     The Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve entrance is located at 9310 Fanita Parkway in Santee. Parking for the 2005 Movies by the Lake is $8 per car and the movie is free. Entry into Santee Lakes begins at 4 p.m. for pre-movie picnics.

Christian Science practitioner to speak
     LA MESA The First Church of Christ, Scientist, La Mesa, will host a “Filling the Emptiness” discussion Saturday, June 25 at 2:30 p.m. Margaret Rogers, a Christian Science practitioner, national speaker and published author on spiritual topics will lead the discussion.
     The event will be held at the La Mesa Community Center, Nan Couts Cottage, 5045 Memorial Drive. Childcare will be provided.

Unload unsafe fireworks at Spring Valley disposal
    
SPRING VALLEY The annual fireworks disposal will be held Monday, June 27 at the Sheriff’s Bomb Disposal Range, 11970 Singer Lane in Spring Valley. The disposal will be from 8:30 to 11 a.m.
     Each year there are over 12,000 firework-related injuries nationwide; most involving severe burns to the face and/or loss of fingers. Almost half the victims were children under the age of 15. Class “C” fireworks caused 19 percent of these injuries. Class “C” fireworks include sparklers, flaming balls, bottle rockets, smokers, fountains and candles that shoot sparks. All fireworks are illegal throughout San Diego County.
     All visitors will be required to bring and wear a construction-type safety helmet. This range does not have a safety bunker. Light casual clothing is recommended due to hot weather conditions. Portable restroom is available.

CCT to perform Broadway hit Grease
     LA MESA The Christian Community Theater will kick off its twenty-fifth anniversary season with a production of the Broadway hit, Grease. The performance will run from June 30 through July 23 at the Mt. Helix Amphitheater in La Mesa. All performances begin at 8 p.m.
     Grease will feature Jesse Abeel of Ramona as Danny Zuko and Kelsey Venter of San Diego as Sandy Dumbrowski. Written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, Grease first opened on Broadway in 1972 and enjoyed a popular revival again in 1994, as well as success as a movie musical.
     Directed by Amy Cordileone, Grease features a live orchestra conducted by Doug Roberts, with choreography by KC Grulli, music direction by Janie d’Avignon and a cast of 36 performers.
     Performance dates are June 30, July 1-2, 7-10, 13-14, 16-17 and 21-23. Ticket prices range from $17-$34 for adults, with children 12 and under admitted for $12. ACC to hold Christmas in July holiday sale
     ALPINE - The Alpine Community Center will host a Christmas in July decoration and ornament sale Wednesday, July 14 from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.
     The event will be held in the ballroom of the Community Center. Items for sale will include lawn decorations, ornaments and knickknacks. All proceeds will benefit the ACC’s programs.

Grammy-winning country artist to perform at Viejas
     ALPINE - Country artist LeAnn Rimes will perform at Viejas Concerts in the Park Wednesday, July 27. Tickets are $70 per person.
     Rimes broke into the country music scene when she was only 13 years old, with a voice many have likened to the immortal Patsy Cline. Since her Grammy-winning debut album, Rimes has gifted fans with a series of best-selling CDs and hit singles.
     Viejas Concerts in the Park has reserved seating and general admission lawn seating, with wheelchair accessible tickets available upon request. All guests must have a ticket to enter. All shows occur rain or shine. Free parking and paid valet service is available.

Youth sports foundation to host international basketball exchange
     The Sports for Youth Foundation will host international sports exchange sports events this summer.
     The foundation is accepting applications from Canadian and American boys aged 15-20 who are accomplished high school of club basketball players and good citizens in their school and community to participate in a junior basketball exchange in Brazil. The tour, which begins in August, will travel to Rio de Janeiro and other selected Brazilian cities. The registration deadline is July 30.

Local farmers needed at Farmer’s Market
     ALPINE - The Alpine Farmer’s Market is looking for local residents who grow their own crops or livestock and have a little surplus to sell at the Farmer’s Market Cooperative in Alpine.

Family fishing fun on Lake Cuyamaca
     CUYAMACA - The fishing has been good in Lake Cuyamaca this season.
     Anglers have had good luck with trout, crappie and Bullhead catfish. The east lake has been the hot spot for larger trout, with Pump House Cove producing the most limits on the west lake. The bass are in the pre-spawn with some spawning in the shallows.
     Some notable catches: Mitchell Hill, San Diego, 6.75 lb largemouth bass. Scott Bruckner, Bonsall, 4 lb rainbow trout. Delacruz family, Ramona, 20 trout weighing 26 lbs total.

Descanso library continues summer reading program
     DESCANSO - The Descanso branch of the San Diego County Library, 9545 River Dr., continues its youth summer reading program this summer, offering reading events for teens and younger children.
     Reading events include a story time ever Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. and a story and related craft every Friday at 1 p.m. The program will conclude with an end of summer reading party on Friday, Aug. 5 at 1 p.m.

GP 2020 Sterring Committee meeting
     SAN DIEGO – The San Diego General Plan 2020 Steering Committee will be holding a meeting to discuss road networking, June 25. The meeting gets underway at 9 a.m. at the Department of Planning and Land Use, County Operations Center Annex, 5201 Ruffin Road, Suite B, in San Diego.
     Members of the public are welcome to come and voice their opinions at the meeting.
     The Steering Committee is comprised of one representative from each of the planning and sponsor groups. This committee guides and assists in the preparation of GP 2020 by making policy recommendations to staff, the Planning Commission, and Board of Supervisors.

MDA hosts weeklong summer camp

     CUYAMACA —
The media, local sponsors, friends and family are invited to attend VIP Day on Friday, June 24 at the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s summer camp when the Poway Academy of Beauty will have beauticians personally applying makeup and creating 50’s-style hairdos for those in attendance.  Immediately following food and refreshments, campers will attend a Sock Hop.
     The MDA’s annual weeklong summer camp has entertained 53 campers along with staff from southern California June 19-25 at Camp Cuyamaca.
     The camp’s theme is “Time Travel.” The week’s events included toga Olympics, wheelchair soccer and military hide-and-seek.

New Little League field to be dedicated to former player
     CAMPO The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony of the new Brandon Lookingbill Memorial Field on Saturday, June 25 at 10 a.m. at the Campo fields.
     Lookingbill was a former Mountain Empire Little League player who passed away at 17 years old from leukemia. Present for the dedication will be Mountain Empire Little League Members, Diane Jacobs, a Padre representative, members of the Mountain Empire Community Center and the Lookingbill Family.

Citizens Committee to discuss future Alpine school
     ALPINE The next meeting of the Alpine High School Citizens Committee will be Monday, June 27 at 7 p.m. in the Oak Room of the Alpine Community Center.
     Dr. Terry Ryan, superintendent of the Grossmont Union High School District, will again attend the meeting to present an update on the future Alpine High School. Accompanying Dr. Ryan will be other school district officials who are directly involved in planning for the new high school.
     GUHSD Board Trustee Larry Urdahl of Alpine will also be present to comment and answer questions.

Alpine Family Medicine announces grand opening
     ALPINE
Mountain Health and Community Services announces the grand opening of Alpine Family Medicine on Friday, July 1 at 9:30 a.m.,
     Alpine Family Medicine is located at 1620 Alpine Blvd. The day’s events include a tour of the facility, free blood pressure checks and diabetic screenings, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and appetizers. There will also be opportunity drawings and an opportunity to meet family care doctors.

UC Davis wildlife director guides wildfire field trip
     CUYAMACA - The Anzo-Borrego Institute will host a wildlife and wildfire field trip on Sunday, July 17 at Cuyamaca Rancho State Park.
     Guided by instructor Dr. Walter Boyce, director of the UC Davis Wildlife Health Center, the field trip will visit two sites that were impacted by the Cedar Fire. Participants will look at differences among the sites and talk about what happened to the wild animals, especially the large mammals.
     The field trip will meet at Los Caballos Equestrian Camp and participants will drive to each location. A four-wheel-drive or two-wheel-drive pickup with high clearance is ideal. Low-clearance vehicles cannot make it over the rough dirt roads to Fern Flat.

American Cancer Society hosts Relay for Life
    
EL CAJON — The American Cancer Society will host the Relay for Life in East County on June 25 and 26 at Granite Hills High School, 1719 E. Madison Ave., in El Cajon.
     The relay is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of the American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people take turns running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one member on the track at all times. This year’s event will run from 10:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m.
     Every year, Relay for Life brings together millions of people to raise money to help prevent cancer, save lives and diminish suffering from the disease. People can participate by joining a team, sponsoring a team, or just cheering the walkers on.

Cross-cultural foundations to host San Diego-Tijuana youth camp
     TIJUANA - The Americas Foundation and Young Audiences of San Diego are sponsoring a weeklong International Friendship Camp this summer at Colegio La Esperanza in Tijuana from July 24 through 30. The camp will accomplish its mission of fostering greater cross-border understanding among San Diego and Tijuana children by pairing young San Diego campers, ages 6-12, with Tijuana youngsters of the same age.
     The overnight camp will focus on the arts and feature multi-lingual classes and workshops and evening campfires with performances by visiting artists and campers.
     Parents will register and participate alongside their children for the week of the camp. The camp will function at an intimate level, with no more than 40 campers from either border city. Cost per participant for the 7-day camp is $180 (U.S.) before July 1, and $245 after June 30. The fee includes meals and field trips.

Kindergarten enrollment is underway
     ALPINE — Enrollment for kindergarten 2005-06 began April 11. Enrollment packets are available at Creekside Early Learning Center and at all Alpine elementary schools, the Alpine Union School District office, Viejas Indian School, and Joan MacQueen Middle School.
Children born on or before Dec. 2, 2000 are eligible to attend kindergarten. 
     To register your child for kindergarten, you must provide a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate, a physical dated after April 2, 2005, up-to-date immunization records, and current proof of residence such as an electric bill, propane bill, water bill or tax bill.

Classic Cruise car show returns to El Cajon
     EL CAJON — The El Cajon Community Development Corporation will host the Cajon Classic Cruise from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Wednesday from May 18 to Sept. 28. 
     The Cajon Classic Cruise features more than 500 classic, custom and hot rod cars valued at more than $10 million. The free weekly event is centered on East Main Street at Prescott Promenade, just east of the Main and Magnolia intersection downtown El Cajon.
     A series of show events are planned, including an Independence Day celebration on June 29; a Salute to the American Hot Dog on July 20; National Night Out on Aug. 3; a VIP Parade on Aug. 24, and a special Halloween Car Show on Oct. 26. Raffle tickets will be sold every Wednesday for a fully restored 1952-1956 Chevron Short Tohkeim 39 gas pump to be given away at the Sept. 28 show.

New writers’ group to meet
     ALPINE — A new writer’s group is forming and will meet each Thursday at 1 p.m. in the recreation center of the Creekside Meadows Apartments, 1750 Arnold Way.
     Participation is free and activities will include discussion, support and critique of members’ poems, prose, plays, books, brochures, biographies, or biblical stories.

Spirit choir accepting new members
     ALPINE — Alpine children between the ages of six and 13 are invited to join the Spirit Choir. 
     Directed by Joanne Ginkel, with husband Ludwig Ginkel as production manager, the youngsters meet every Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the Alpine Community Church. There they learn lively new fun songs and rehearse older ones. 
     The choir sings about once a month and on special holiday occasions during the church’s worship service. Contact Ginkel at 445 8480 for more information.
