ALPINE — Deputies are seeking information from any members of the public who may have seen the killers of a man found Thursday near the Tavern Road exit on I-8.
Lt. Tom Bennett of the sheriff’s homicide unit, said deputies believe that Daniel Rodriguez, 20, of San Ysidro, may have been an urban gang member, due to his appearance and manner of death.
Rodriguz was reported laying on the shoulder on the south side of the freeway and the east edge of the Tavern Road overpass. A passerby called in the report at about 9:30 p.m., Oct. 13 and California Highway Patrol responded initially, said Sgt. John Mercer of the Alpine Sheriff’s Substation.
Mercer reported that Rodriguez appeared to have either fallen from, or been pushed off, the overpass.
CHP officers called deputies and Rodriguez, in critical condition, was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital, which later contacted them to report that he had a gunshot wound to the head.
He died later of his wounds.
Mercer said Rodiguez had tattoos, including one on the back of a shoulder that said “SD.” On his chest was written “Naomi” and the words, “In the south I trust.” Rodriguez is described as 5 feet, 7 inches tall, having a shaved head, and wearing white tennis shoes.
Evidence at the scene indicated that Rodriguez had not been there long, Bennett said, and deputies are not absolutely certain whether he was shot before he was left, or at the place he was left, but believe it was the former.
“They feel he was probably dumped there after he was shot,” Bennett said.
He was dropped off not much before the person reported seeing him,” he added. The estimated time frame would have been between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.
Homicide detectives are seeking information from anyone who might have seen a group of people or a vehicle on or near the overpass between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.
Bennett said anyone who may have information is urged to call homicide detectives at (858) 974-2321.
