Local school Halloween celebrations
     ALPINE — Several local schools will be holding various Halloween festivities in the next week. Most schools will have a dress-up day on Oct. 31 when students can come to school in costumes.
     Shadow Hills Elementary will hold a Fall Festival on Friday, Oct. 28 at the school from 6 to 9 p.m.
     Alpine Elementary will hold its Fall Festival on Friday, Oct. 28 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
     On Monday, Oct. 31, Boulder Oaks students will dress-up and take part in a morning costume parade.

Viejas costume contest
     ALPINE — Viejas Outlet Center will host a Halloween costume contest on Saturday, Oct. 29 from 1 to 3 p.m. registration for the event begins at noon.
     Entry is free and the winners in each age group will win a $100 Viejas outlet Center gift certificate.
Ages two and under will take place at 1:30 p.m., three to five at 1:45 p.m., six to nine at 2 p.m., 10 to 14 at 2:15 p.m. and winners will be announced at 2:45 p.m.

Mtn. Empire celebrates homecoming
     PINE VALLEY — Mountain Empire high school will celebrate its homecoming on Friday, Oct. 28 at the school, 3305 Buckman Springs Road. 
     The event will kick off with the junior varsity football game at 5 p.m. The parade of floats will go at 6:30 p.m., followed by the varsity football game at 7:30 p.m. At halftime, the homecoming court will be named and the king and queen will be crowned. There will also be fireworks after the game.

Historic open house to take place this weekend
     ALPINE — Three historic buildings will be open for viewing this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 29 and 30, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., in Alpine. The opportunity to view these buildings is provided by the Alpine Historical Society and the Alpine Woman’s Club. 
     The Alpine Historical Society museum is located at 2116 Tavern Road. A display on the life and works of Beatrice La Force and an 1890 organ from the early Alpine Community Church can be seen in the 1899 Captain Adam Beaty House. Antique furniture and various pictures, scrapbooks and documents relating to Alpine history are on display in the Dr. Sophronia Nichols House, circa 1896.

BCLT holds plant and art sale
     ALPINE — The Back Country Land trust will hold the 9th Annual California Native Plant Sale on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 10 a.m. in the Joan MacQueen Middle School parking lot, 2001 Tavern Road.
     Sales are on a first come, first served basisand plants sell out quickly. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Back Country Land Trust.

First Annual Alpine Arts Festival
     ALPINE — The first annual Alpine Art Festival will take place Saturday, Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2612 Alpine Blvd.
     Participants will be able to view art exhibits, including works from local artists ad students, join in hands-on art projects and enjoy food, raffles and live entertainment. Also during the day groups will be creating an Alpine Community Mosaic Mural. All those interested in taking part should bring something to add to the mural. Objects must fit in the palm of your hand.

Silver Tea graces community center
     ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center Auxiliary will hold its annual Silver Tea, this Saturday, Oct. 29, at 11 a.m.
     The program kicks off the three-event Christmas Calling series and includes a lunch, fashion how, and shopping boutique in the beautifully decorated ballroom.

Campo community craft fair
     CAMPO — A craft fair will take place in Campo at the Mountain Health Community Center, 976 Sheridan Road, on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
     There will be many handcrafted items, homemade treats, holiday gifts and other crafts available for purchse. All of the items are made by local women in the Campo/Lake Morena area. There will also be gently used books for sale.
     All proceeds from the fair will benefit to new Campo/Lake Morena library.

Halloween at Alpine Church
     ALPINE — It will be a family celebration of Halloween at the Alpine Community Church on Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. Mom and dad, grandma and grandpa, all the kids, and even friends and neighbors, are invited to don costumes (that’s optional of course) and bring a dish to share, entrée, salad or dessert for the pot luck supper to start the evening.
     After supper in Fuller Hall, there will be fun games to play, pumpkins to carve, costumes to admire, apples to bob for and plenty of cider to sip. Halloween Family Night is sponsored by the Board of Deacons who want it known that everyone is welcome.

Second annual Hairball Halloween Party in Pine Valley
     PINE VALLEY — The second annual Hairball Halloween party will take place Saturday, Oct. 29 at El Rancho Grande Restaurant’s Rocking BW Cantina, 28944 Old Highway 80 in Pine Valley.
     The party will feature music by the local Highway 80 Band, as well as prizes for scariest, best costume and most outrageous costumes. Get dressed up with your family and come take part.

Miracle Mile of Quarters Golf Tournament
     EL CAJON — The 2005 Miracle Mile of Quarters Golf Tournament will take place Nov. 4 at the Singing Hills Golf Club in El Cajon.
     Registration begins at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m. Lunch and drinks will be served all day with cocktails at 5 p.m. The evening will end with dinner and a live auction at 6 p.m.

D.C. Kids host holiday bazaar
     ALPINE — The D.C. Kids group will be hosting a Holiday Shopping Bazaar in the Alpine Elementary School auditorium on Thursday, Nov. 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
     There will be more that 10 different vendors who have agreed to donate a portion of their sales to the D.C. Kids group to help fund the group’s yearly trip to Washington D.C.

New Campo-Morena library to open
     CAMPO — The long-awaited ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Campo-Morena Village branch library in Campo will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Nov. 18.
     Library service at the current building will cease Saturday, Oct. 29, at 3 p.m. in preparation for the move to new 2,500 square foot library, located at 31356 Highway 94, next to the Alternative Education Center.
     During the closure, the Mobile Library will provide interim bookmobile service on Monday, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the new library.

     To get to the site of the grand opening of the new library, take I-8 east toward El Centro. Take the Buckman Springs Road exit and turn right. Turn right on Highway 94. The library is located at 31360 Highway 94, Campo, on the right hand side of the road.

The Alpine Sun to co-host airport forum
     ALPINE — A town hall event co-hosted by the San Diego Airport Authority and The Alpine Sun, will take place Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center. Airport authority officials will hear comments and answer questions posed by the public.
     This event will include a presentation covering the latest on the search for an airport solution and an audience question session where attendees will get the chance to have their questions addressed directly by airport authority staff.
     Other upcoming events for the airport authority are: Public Working Group meeting Thursday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Sheraton Hotel Mission Valley, 1433 Camino Del Rio South, San Diego, in the Regency Court Ballroom. The 32-member Public Working Group will review a comparative analysis and an environmental analysis update for the two remaining civilian sites currently under consideration — Campo/Boulevard and the Imperial County Desert site.
     Other upcoming town hall events are scheduled for Nov. 3 in Del Mar and Nov. 10 in Fallbrook.

VFW Post 9578 November activities
     ALPINE — The Alpine VFW Post 9578 will be hosting several events taking place in November.
The auxiliary meeting will take place Nov. 5 at 9 a.m. The Post meeting will be held Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. 
     On Friday, Nov. 11, Veterans Day, there will be a ceremony at the Alpine Cemetery and placing of hand made Poppy wreaths at 11 a.m. Another Ceremony will be held at the Post Wall at noon to be followed by a potluck.
     On Thursday, Nov. 24 there will be a complete turkey dinner served at the Post.
     There is also football every Sunday and breakfast served as well as music every Friday evening with karaoke and the Commanders fish fry.
