ALPINE — The Alpine Chamber of Commerce welcomes the public to
a business luncheon meeting at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 30
at Nori Sushi Bar and Grill at the Viejas Outlet Center.
Introduce yourself to local business people and become
familiar with local resources. At noon, Susan Roberts,
Business Services Coordinator of the East County Career Center
will present a speech, “Your Business is Great; ECCC Can Make
It Greater.”

Step back in time with dwellers of Laguna Mountain
LAGUNA MOUNTAIN — The Laguna Mountain Volunteer Association
invites the public to its free, 20th annual Living History
exhibition Saturday, Sept. 2 and Sunday, Sept. 3. The event
will be held at the Red-Tailed Roost Volunteer Headquarters,
at mile marker 22.5 on Sunrise Highway, near the town of Mount
Laguna, in the Cleveland National Forest.
Guided tours begin hourly 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.,
Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.
The past comes alive in this re-enactment of life in the
mountains. Visit with an old gold prospector, a Kumeyaay
interpreter, Native Americans, rugged cowboys and mountain men
of 100 years past. Meet the first Laguna Forest Ranger, and
relive the travels of a 1908 pioneer family from Imperial
Valley.

69th annual deep pit barbecue celebration
DESCANSO — Our Lady of Light Catholic Church wil host its 69th
annual Deep Pit BBQ Celebration from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.,
Sunday, Sept. 3, in Descanso.
There will be children’s games, door prizes, live music
by Emerald River, and crafts. Suggested donations for the
barbecue are $7.50 for adults, and $4 for children.
Preparations for the barbecue, digging and filling the 55-foot
pit, are open to the public, 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday,
Sept. 2.

Relay for
Life goes this weekend
ALPINE — The Alpine Relay for Life will step off
Saturday, Aug. 19 on the track behind Joan Mac Queen Middle
School. The event will run for 24 straight hours.
Opening ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday and
will include an official proclamation from District 2
Supervisor Dianne Jacob’s office.
At 6 p.m. there will be a survivor ceremony to honor
cancer survivors, with dinner to follow. At 9 p.m. a luminaria
ceremony will take place to remember cancer victims.
There will 24-hour entertainment, food and fun for all of
the relay participants and supporters. Organizers are still
looking for volunteers to help in many different roles
throughout the event.

Society luncheon
ALPINE — The public is invited to attend the Alpine
Historical Society’s bi-monthly meeting at 1 p.m., Sunday,
Aug. 20 at the Alpine Woman's Club, 2156 Alpine Blvd.
Come for lunch or come just for the speaker. You'll learn
some Alpine history and visit with friends and neighbors and
hear stories told by Wayne Brown about his life in Alpine.

ceremony for the Alpine Academy

opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for the Alpine Academy

ALPINE — The Alpine Stagecoach Lions are looking for
participants for this year’s Alpine Viejas Days Parade, which

More Cool Zones are sought by the Aging and Independence
Services division of the county Health and Human Services. If
you know of a potential site that is open during the weekends,
has air conditioning and has space for people to sit and cool

Teen musicians needed for rock and pop band
ALPINE — Father Acker at Alpine Anglican Church is looking for
teen musicians to help with band performances. He is looking
for a bass player and a drummer in middle or high school.
Music styles are from popular to standard rock cover
songs. Father Acker has offered guitar classes free to teens
for three years.

Help protect big cats through fire season
JAPATUL — Lions, Tigers, and Bears, a safe haven for big cats
located in Japatul, needs funds and equipment to keep its cats
safe through the rest of this fire season.
After evacuating the animals during the Horse Fire, needs
persist for generators, commercial gauge water hoses, a van
with cages, stock or horse trailers and transfer cages.

College-bound
students must register for ACT exam by Aug. 18
The next ACT test will be administered on Sept. 1.
College-bound high school students who wish to take the exam
must register by the Aug. 18 deadline. Registrations
postmarked between Aug. 18 and 25 are charged a late
registration fee. Registration forms are found online and high
school guidance counseling offices.
The cost is $29 for the traditional ACT and $43 for those
who choose to take the optional ACT writing test. Some
colleges require a writing score, but many do not, so students
should find out the requirements of prospective colleges
before completing test registration.

Fiddle girl
will play two concerts at Viejas
ALPINE — Fiddler Celia Lawley performs with Thunder
Rose from 5 to 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, and Mulligan
Stew from 5 to 7:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Viejas
Outlet Center on Willows Road.
Celia dances clogging and step dancing styles while
playing the fiddle. She also plays mandolin, accordion, tin
flute, and guitar. Celia has performed in Alpine at the Alpine
Community Concert Series, Alpine Western Days, and the Alpine
Historical Society ice cream social.

Alpine Mountaineers to play at the Q
SAN DIEGO — The Mitey Mites team of the Alpine Mountaineers
Pop Warner football league will play an exhibition game before
the San Diego Chargers versus Seattle Seahawks game scheduled
for Saturday, Aug. 26 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.
The pre-season Chargers game is scheduled to begin at 8
p.m. The Mitey Mites are expected to kick off at about 6 p.m.,
against a team from Tierrasanta. For more information or to

The Alpine Mountaineers are also holding a fund-raiser
dinner at the Viejas Dreamcatcher Lounge on Sept. 8, from 5 to

Saturday, Sept. 2, a movie about Alejandro de la Vega
fights injustice and cruelty by battling an evil mastermind
behind a terrorist plot to destroy the United States, will
begin at 1 p.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m., poetry readings by Gary
Soto, Ana Castillo, Kathleen Ann Gonzalez, Denise Chavez ad
Esmeralda Santiago.
Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m., a movie; a true tale of how
Mexican Revolutionary Pancho Villa allowed a Hollywood crew to
film him in battle.
Thursday, Sept. 21, will be a pre-school Hispanic story
hour with Hispanic crafts and snacks.

Days will fill four weekends
ALPINE — The Alpine Viejas Days’ celebrations begin
Friday Sept. 29 with A Taste of Alpine and continue the
following four weekends.
Community gatherings for various events, such as the
Southern California Center for Youth, Nature, Arts’ second
annual Art Festival Sept. 30 at the Alpine Community Center;
Alpine Kiwanis’ Chili Cook-off, and Alpine Stagecoach Lions’
Viejas Days’ Parade Oct. 7; the Alpine Arts Association’s
Healing, Art and Global (HAG) Festival Oct. 14; and the
dedication of Historical Old Highway 80 on Oct. 21.

Free books for
schools in Alpine
ALPINE — Literacy for a Lifetime will provide 50 per
cent matching grants from persons and businesses interested in
supporting Alpine classrooms with money for books for
classroom libraries. Make a donation by Sept. 30 to the Alpine
Chamber of Commerce Education Committee.
This program is a partnership is between the Alpine
Chamber of Commerce and the Education Development Corporation
with Usborne Books. A gift of $500 becomes $750 with unlimited
matching grants.
