Chapel of
the Hills hosts barbecue
DESCANSO — Chapel of the Hills Community United
Methodist Church will host a western luau deep-pit barbecue
dinner on Sunday, Aug. 6 from 12:30 to 4 p.m., at 25153
Viejas Blvd. in Descanso.
Attendees will be eligible to win a trip to Hawaii.
Admission for adults is $7, $3.50 for children, or $17 per
family.

half-price day held each Wednesday
ALPINE — Wednesdays will be great deal days at the
Alpine Library Friends Bookstore. Most items will be
half-off! The used bookstore regularly has low prices, but
from now on every Wednesday means slashed prices and smiling
faces.
“We've received so many book donations that we need to
turn the inventory over faster,” said Jill Sing, a bookstore
volunteer. “We also hope to stay open later on Wednesdays…so
all those returning from work can benefit from our half
price reductions.”
The bookstore, located in the Alpine Creek Town Center,
is open Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and
weekends from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Registration dates set
for Mountain Empire students
Local schools start Aug. 29 and students must be
registered before entering school.
Registration clinics for elementary students will be at
local schools sites. Junior and senior high school students
may register any of the sites on the dates listed: Campo
Reservation Learning Center on Monday, Aug. 14, 4 to 7 p.m.;
Jacumba Elementary on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 9 to 11 a.m.; Clover
Flat Elementary on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.;
Descanso Elementary on Wednesday Aug. 16, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.;
Potrero Elementary Thursday, Aug. 17, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.;
Campo Elementary Thursday, Aug. 17, 1 to 4 p.m.; Mountain
Empire High School Library Friday, Aug. 18, Noon to 4 p.m.,
and 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Country Western BBQ Dinner Dance
ALPINE — On July 29, from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., the Alpine
Community Center will host a western dinner dance. Luis
Sumaya will be giving dancing demonstrations from 5:30 p.m.
to 6 p.m. and dance instructions from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The
musical entertainment will be Whiskey Ridge from 7 p.m.
until 11 p.m. Dinner will also be provided and includes
salad, BBQ chicken, potato salad, baked beans and rolls.
Tickets can be purchased in advance for $20 or $25 at the
door. Seniors, 60 and over, and ACC members are $15.

ALPINE — The Alpine Writer’s Guild is in the process
of organizing a writing group for teens. If you are a local

AYSO holds
opening day soccer festival
ALPINE — The Alpine Youth Soccer Organization invites
parents, kids, friends, coaches and teams to the opening day
soccer festival 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Aug. 5 at Creekside Early
Learning Center.
Participants will get to meet soccer legend Juli Veee,
test their skills against him and see his art displayed,
available for purchase. There will be games, food, and fun,
proceeds benefiting Alpine soccer programs.

VFW hosts luau
ALPINE — The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 9578 will
host its annual Luau, at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 16 at the
VFW Post, 844 Tavern Rd.
Proceeds from the event will benefit San Diego Hospice’s
Cancer Program, as well as other projects for veterans,
their families and the community. Live music will be
provided by Uncle Bob and the Earthrmovers, from 1 to 5
p.m.
Tickets at the door or in the canteen are $7.
The VFW Ladies Auxiliary meets the first Saturday of each
month at 9:30 a.m. the post meeting is the second Saturday
of each month at 11 a.m.
Emergency Animal Rescue Luncheon
DEL MAR — A fundraising luncheon, including a silent
auction is planned for August 15, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30
p.m. at Scalini Restaurant in Del Mar. The Emergency Animal
Rescue is a 501-C non-profit volunteer organization
dedicated to the physical rescue of domestic and wildlife
animals in threatening situations. Recent rescues include
animals from Julian Pines Fire, the Cedar Fire and the
Viejas fire. Tickets are $125.

ALPINE — For those struggling with the newest abdominal
roller, protein shake or crash diet, consider a simple, fun
and healthy alternative. Believe it or not, country line
dancing in the park is the latest fad in exercise.
The Alpine Community Center offers an outdoor fitness
class every Saturday morning. Each session runs from 8:30
a.m. – 10 a.m. and costs $7.

Hispanic Heritage Month Events
JACUMBA — The Jacumba Branch library will be
celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by having a series of
events in September.
Saturday, September 2, a movie about Alejandro de la
Vega fights injustice and cruelty by battling an evil
mastermind behind a terrorist plot to destroy the United
States, will begin at 1 p.m.
Tuesday, September 12 at 6 p.m., poetry readings by
Gary Soto, Ana Castillo, Kathleen Ann Gonzalez, Denise
Chavez ad Esmeralda Santiago.
Tuesday, September 19 at 6 p.m., a movie; a true tale of how
Mexican Revolutionary Pancho Villa allowed a Hollywood crew
to film him in battle.
Thursday, Sept. 21, will be a pre-school Hispanic story hour
with Hispanic crafts and snacks.
