Alpine robber may escape prison 
A young Alpine man who committed a bank robbery will get a 90-day diagnostic study at a state prison where officials there will make sentencing recommendations as to whether he is prison material or if he could be placed on probation.  

APG to vote on suspension of standing rules at special meeting 
Members of the Alpine Planning Group will be asked to consider whether or not to suspend the group’s standing rules at a special meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 11. The special meeting has been called to specifically address the much-disputed vacancy left by Scott Lamb when he departed in September.   

Winds of change are blowing at Back Country windmill farm 
The giant wind turbines located in Boulevard on top of Crestwood Summit started spinning last week on the largest commercial wind farm on Indian lands in the country. Electricity from the farm started flowing into San Diego’s power-hungry grid over the Christmas long-weekend.

Historical society’s Cedar Fire collection on display at library
Those terrifying black clouds, shot through with streaks of fiery red, billowing up across the zenith, the thick acrid smoke everywhere, and the ever increasing sense of disaster spreading through the town, is all there, displayed in two huge binders. The books are packed with photos of the Cedar Fire taken by homeowners who lost everything, by fire fighters, and by reporters covering the story.

Three Valhalla wrestlers earn medals at 2005 ECI  
The 35th annual El Cajon/San Ysidro Invitational wrestling tournament ended Dec. 28 at San Ysidro High School after two days of top-flight competition featuring some of the best talent from the western United States.  

High School Sports Scoreboard: Helix places third in hoops tourney
The Helix Highlanders were one of four Grossmont Conference basketball teams, including one of two boys squads, to win San Diego Section titles last season. The 2005-06 campaign looks to hold promise as well after the Highlanders bounded to a third-place finish at the 14-team 2005 Spartan Holiday Classic.

What the Helix High School bagpipe brigade and Valhalla High School vocal music choir started, Oklahoma linebacker Clint Ingram ended to cap yet another Pacific Life Holiday Bowl extravaganza Dec. 29 at Qualcomm Stadium.
