Kiwanis safety event to be held June 3
     ALPINE — On Saturday, June 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Alpine Kiwanis Child Safety Event will be held in the Alpine Community Center parking lot, 1830 Alpine Blvd., in Alpine.
     Professionally trained staff members from the San Diego Safe Kids Coalition will inspect and/or install your child's car seat. Child safety advocates say that in 96.7 percent of the San Diego County children’s car seats are installed incorrectly.
     Kiwanians will also be on hand with the organization’s Child I.D. Kit Program. Fingerprinting and photographing your child will be free. San Diego Sheriff’s Department Crime Prevention Specialist Paula Dickenson will offer other safety tips.

Country line dancing class at ACC
     ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center will host a country line dancing exercise class every Saturday beginning June 3, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on the park stage at 1830 Alpine Blvd.

Teach your dog to alert you to rattlesnakes
    CAMPO — Quail Unlimited will host a “Snake Break You Dog” workshop on Saturday and Sunday, June 3 and 4.
     A professional dog trainer will use live, but harmless, rattlesnakes to teach dogs to recognize the sight, sound and smell of rattlesnakes. Patrick Callaghan Enterprises will conduct the workshop to teach dogs how to alert owners of rattlesnakes and avoidance training.
     The cost for the weekend workshop is $70 and proceeds benefit Quail Unlimited, a nonprofit organization. Reservations are required.

Mountaineers sign players, cheerleaders
     ALPINE — The Alpine Mountaineers, one of eight Pop Warner football and cheer divisions in San Diego County, will hold sign-ups for football players and cheerleaders from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 7, and 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, June 10. 
     Both sign-ups will be held at Alpine Elementary School and are open to for girls and boys, aged 5 to 15 years old. Levels of play include Midget, Jr. Midget, Pee Wee, Jr. Pee Wee, Mitey Mite and Flag.

Mind, Body, Soul health fair is coming up
     ALPINE — The first annual Mind, Body and Soul Health Fair will be held Saturday, June 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wild West Athletic Club parking lot, 2710 Alpine Blvd.
     Sponsorship and vendor booth rental space is available starting at $25.

New middle school to hold open house
     EL CAJON — Local community members are invited to an open house at the newly-built Los Coches Creek Middle School campus, from 3:30 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, June 7. 
     The new school is currently in the final phase of construction. It will be completed this summer and ready for its opening school day on Aug. 21, 2006.
     The school is located at 9669 Dunbar Lane.
     It includes an administrative building, gymnasium/multipurpose/performing arts building, library multimedia building, computer and technology classrooms, PE building, and three classroom clusters each with science labs, and extensive sports fields.

Piano students to play at annual recital
     ALPINE — Students of local piano and organ teacher, David Bruce, will perform in his 23rd annual spring recital at Pastor Hal Robbins’ First Baptist Church of Alpine, at the corner of Arnold Way and Tavern Road at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 11.

Stomp band starting in Campo
     CAMPO — Campo Music is offering the opportunity for those interested to be part of a new musical group. Patterned after the group Stomp, participants of any age and any experience level will earn unique musical styles and instruments.
     Joining is free of charge, children under the age of 8 are required to have a parent or guardian present.

BCLT holds butterfly-watching trek
     ALPINE — The Back Country Land Trust will join ecologist Michael Klein at Wright's Field to find and learn about butterflies on Saturday, June 10, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
     Participants should have the opportunity to see at least a half-dozen types of butterflies, including the Hermes Copper Butterfly. This rare butterfly depends on the spiny redberry found abundantly in Wright's Field, which was heavily lost in other areas in the 2003 Cedar Fire. In addition to being a butterfly expert, Michael will share his knowledge about birds we see and hear in the field.
     Anyone interested should meet at the Joan Mac Queen Middle School parking lot.

Bloodmobile to visit Alpine Elementary
     ALPINE — The San Diego Blood Bank bloodmobile will accept donations at an open to the public blood drive sponsored by The Alpine Kiwanis at Alpine Elementary School, 1850 Alpine Blvd., on Saturday, June 10, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
     All donors at this drive will be awarded a specially designed San Diego Blood Bank T-shirt; a voucher for a free oil change, courtesy of Evans Tire and Service Centers; a free 5 x 7 Photo Enlargement with any “In store” processing courtesy of Longs Drugs; a voucher for 50 percent off Longs Brand items; and a voucher for a free car wash, courtesy of Genie Car Wash.
     Donors also will receive a medical history review and mini-physical, which includes blood pressure, pulse and temperature checks.

Alpine Chorale holds spring concert
     ALPINE — The Alpine Chorale will host its annual Family and Friends Spring Concert at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, June 12, 2:30 p.m. in Boulder Oaks Auditorium.
     The community is invited to attend this free concert and stay for dessert.

Celebrate Father’s Day with Italian buffet
     ALPINE — Christ The King Episcopal Church will hold an Italian night on Saturday, June 17, at 5:30 p.m.
     Tickets for the dinner are $15, which includes an Italian buffet dinner including beverage and desert. Kids get in for free. There will also be live entertainment, door prizes and an auction.

Alpine Revitalization steering committee meeting coming up
     ALPINE — The next meeting of Supervisor Dianne Jacob’s Alpine Revitalization Steering Committee will be held June 23, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Crown Hill clubhouse.
     All revitalization sub-committees should meet prior to the June 23 meeting to prepare updates to the community matrix. Return changes to Sharon Ford no later than June 12, sharon.ford@sdcounty.ca.gov.
     The Crown Hills clubhouse is located at 1821 Victoria Park Terrace in Alpine.

36th annual Pine Valley Days scheduled
PINE VALLEY — The 36th annual Pine Valley Days will take place July 28, 29 and 30 in Pine Valley, hosted by the Mountain Empire Men’s Club.
     The three-day event begins with a deep pit barbecue at the Pine Valley Park. The barbecue cost is $7 per adult and $4 for each child under 12.
     Saturday, July 29 starts out with the biggest parade in East County, which starts at 9 a.m. and includes more than 60 entries.
