Alpine teens fight cancer — one pastry at a time

ALPINE — Brunch served by 15 teenagers can brighten anyone’s day, especially if the hosts are staging the event for charity. Last weekend the Alpine Community Church Youth Group raised money to participate in the Cancer Walk on Aug. 19 and 20.
Tables were beautifully set with flower centerpieces, white place mats, cups of cut fresh fruit and baskets of rolls and pastries. Soft music played in the background while those in attendance were treated to a full-service breakfast. Smiling teens poured a choice of coffee, tea, lemonade or milk for the children at the tables. These young folks did it all, even the grace, which was pronounced by Ryan Silvia.
Denny and Kyle Manis were in the kitchen, presiding over the hot stove, cooking omelets filled with ham and cheese. A team of boys added hash brown potatoes, link sausage and bacon to the plates, and waitresses politely served the tables.
The youth group even cleaned up afterward. Their parents had donated the food with each teen bringing an item. Sponsors Mike and Kari Janak were there to help as needed, but as they said, “The kids organized this themselves, and they did a pretty darn good job of it!”
No tickets were sold. Instead a glass container accepted donations at the door. When breakfast was over that jar was stuffed with cash, providing a good start toward their entrance fees for the Cancer Walk. They need $100 for each member of the team, and ten of them have signed up to participate, but they’re thinking beyond that amount.
“We have a goal of $5,000,” said Kyle Manis, ACC Youth Group President. “It won’t be easy, but we really believe in the cause.”
The Cancer Walk promises to be a fun-filled day. It’s a 24-hour event with at least one member of the team running or walking the track at Joan MacQueen Middle School at all times.
ACC’s team, named Prayer Is My Power, will camp out on the grounds during the entire 24-hour stint.

Photos: It took a team to fill fruit cups for the entire dinning room but this crew did the job in record time. Left to right they are Kendall Havener,Danielle Stathus, Alanna Haberle, Chelsey Schaffer and a little apprentice to the job, Kathryn Stathus.

At right, Tim Denny, one of the two chefs for the breakfast. cooked bacon and sausages, flipped potato partties and finally made individual omelettes stuffed with ham and cheese.
