New fire station to open with local memorabilia as interior decor
ALPINE — With its grand opening scheduled for Friday, March 17, the Alpine Fire Protection District is still seeking local historical memorabilia and art to decorate its public areas.
Operations have already moved from the old station, located in front of the Alpine Community Center, and into their new home at 1364 Tavern Road.
Located across from the Alpine Creek Shopping Center, the new station boasts 13,500 square feet of operating and living space.
The new building has a command center, a multi-purpose meeting room, training area, finance office, and the chief's office, in addition to living space for on-duty fire fighters and bays to hold four large pieces of apparatus, along with two specialized vehicles like the fire chief's car or smaller rescue trucks.
“As fire fighters say goodbye to their old station, they want to ensure they capture and honor the history of the fire department within the new structure.” said Chief Doug Matter. “To that end, the department is turning to the public to see if citizens have old fire department photos or memorabilia that, if selected, could be copied to hang in the new fire station.
“The history of our organization is extremely important to all of us”, Matter added. “We are all standing on the shoulders of those that came before us and we want to have them represented in this new station.” The department has been working with the Alpine Historical Society to select photos or memorabilia from their archives, as well.
Citizens who may want to submit photos or historical items for consideration should contact the Alpine Fire Protection District at 445-2635, or stop by the new station. Formed in 1948, and adopted by voters as a full district in 1957, the AFPD currently operates one fully staffed station on a 7/24 basis.
It is governed by an elected five member board of directors serving four-year terms. The board meets monthly.
Funding is derived from property tax dollars, special assessments approved by the voters of the district, plan check fees adopted by district ordinance, community support and grant funds.
The public is invited to take part in a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Alpine Fire Station 17, on Friday, March 17, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The new station has been under construction for more than a year and will finally open its doors to the public after the dedication. Light refreshments will be provided for attendees.
