Planners cite land use, not charity, in denying foster home plan  
Campo planners voted Monday night to deny a long-debated and hard-fought project for a 250-bed foster care facility planned for the Flying A Ranch in Campo. After a heated meeting between planners, residents and proponents, the nine-member board voted 6-3 to advise the San Diego County Board of Supervisors to disapprove the project.  

Essay winners tell us what makes a good teacher 
This year, the Alpine Chamber of Commerce Education Committee received an overwhelming response when it hosted an essay contest with the cooperation of the Alpine Union School District. Over 500 children turned in essays when they were challenged to write about what makes a good teacher. The contest welcomed essays from students in kindergarten through twelfth grade.

On June 6, local voters will weigh in on various ballot measures that will effect Alpine, the Back Country and the entire county. 

Alien smuggler pleads guilty in weather deaths

A guide who smuggled illegal aliens during a snowstorm, in which one man died from hypothermia in Pine Valley, has pleaded guilty to transporting a migrant with death as a result and to bringing in an alien for money. 

Julian firestarter extradited to Arizona
A transient who pleaded guilty to recklessly setting a brush fire that burned 35 acres in Julian on Feb. 8 was sentenced May 16 to 145 days in jail, but is to be extradited to Arizona, rather freed.
 
BOES Career Day draws local talent 
Boulder Oaks Elementary claims success for their first Career Day event, held on Friday, May 19. Sharonfaith Horton the school counselor who organized this event, invited community members and parents of students to discuss their jobs with students.

Two Descanso students awarded scholarships
The Descanso Town Hall Association, Luke Barbour Scholarship Committee, announced the two winners of this year’s competition; Katie Green and Jessica O’Toole. Each scholarship is for $1,000, to be sent to the accredited college or university of the candidate’s choice.
