Calling poets, authors and journalists
     ALPINE  — The Alpine Writer’s Guild is in the process of organizing a writing group for teens. If you are a local teenager and have an interest in writing, please contact Lillian Fisher at 445-5537.

Vacancy on the Descanso Water board of directors
     DESCANSO — Effective Oct. 17, 2006, a vacancy has occurred for the Board of Directors of the Descanso Community Water District. The Board will consider appointment at the group’s regular meeting on Friday, Dec. 1 at 9 a.m. in the Descanso Town Hall.

Seniors can take advantage of food distribution
     BACK COUNTRY — Seniors living in the Back Country who are 60 years of age of older can take advantage of a free food service program, which delivers 40-pound boxes of food to local specific points in the area.
     Residents are currently trying to get the word out and collect information about senior in the area who would like to receive a food box. The current pick-up point in the Campo/Lake Morena area is at Lake Morena Village.

CTN looking for local content
     SAN DIEGO — The County is accepting applications for grants that encourage non-profit and educational institutions to produce quality and timely half-hour video productions. Five $10,000 grants will be awarded through the Local Government Programming Video Grant Program, and finished videos will be aired on CTN, Cox channel 19, and Time Warner Channel 22.

Learn to dance at the community center
     ALPINE — The Learn to Dance Series held at the Alpine Community Center continues on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 7 to 10 p.m.
     With instruction by Luis Sumaya participants will learn dances featuring east and west coast swing. General admission is $10, $8 for seniors.

Community center hosts second annual fall tennis classic
     ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center will be hosting the Second Annual ACC Fall Tennis Classic on the weekend of Nov. 18 and 19. The tournament will be adult mixed doubles competition for experienced players. There will be trophies for winners and some door prizes.
     The entry fee is 16 dollars per player, and the deadline to register is Nov. 13. The public is invited to watch and cheer on their favorite players for free.

Mountain Empire Garden Club hosts native plant sampler
     LAKE MORENA — The Mountain Empire Garden Club will hold a native plant sampler for Thanksgiving on Sunday, Nov. 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. in Lake Morena.
Participants should prepare a dish made from a selected native plant that grows in their own back yard.

November events at Fantastic Ceramics
     ALPINE — On Nov. 19, Fantastic Ceramics will have paint for humanity, allowing customers to bring in one non-perishable food item and receive a free 6-by-6-inch tile frame back. Nov. 22 will be half off all Fall themed pottery.
     Nov. 23 the gallery will be closed for Thanksgiving and Nov. 24 the holiday hours begin, opening 9 a.m. every day except Fridays and Sundays until Dec. 23.

Log Jammin’ in Peutz Valley
     PEUTZ VALLEY — During October many of the dead oak trees were cut along the Puetz Valley road right of way and stockpiled in the valley for the residents to use. On Nov. 19 from 11 a.m. till dark, Peutz Valley residents and people from the Alpine Revitalization effort are invited to make use of the log pile for furnishings, sculptures.
     There will be assistance and equipment to help load trucks, however safety equipment and tools are not provided. Some items from the event will be donated to the Alpine Town Center as part of the Alpine Revitalization effort. There is also a mound of mulch available for the taking, and there will be plenty of small firewood sized pieces.
     For the less crafty, after dark there will be potluck dinner and a classic holiday film starting at 5:30 p.m.
The event will take place at Joe and Rita Sterling’s place at 1646 Peutz Valley Road. For information call the Sterlings at 659-1234.

Community potluck in Pine Valley
     PINE VALLEY — Tuesday, Nov. 28, there will be a community potluck at the Pine Valley community center from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. All mountain area residents are invited to bring finger foods and enjoy crafts, music by violinist and composer Bryan Butler carols and warm fellowship.

Santa Claus is coming to town
     ALPINE — Santa arrives in Alpine on Friday, Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m., riding down Alpine Boulevard for the 11th annual Alpine Village Christmas Parade of Light.
     Everyone is invited to be in the parade, the only requirement is that your entry be decorated with lights. Lighted costumes bikes, small trucks, golf carts, lawn tractors, etcetera are encouraged.
     Participants will meet at the Alpine Women’s Club parking lot at 6 p.m. The parade will step off at 6:30 p.m. and march down Alpine Boulevard to Alpine Elementary School.
     Following the parade everyone is invited to join in the lighting of the community Christmas trees and a community sing-along, and of course the snow run.

Campo family nights
     CAMPO — The Mountain Empire Collaborative is sponsoring Campo Family Night at the Mountain Empire Community Center from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees will have a chance to meet their neighbors, have dinner, see a movie, play games, crafts and much more. They will be on Fridays, Dec. 1, Jan. 26, Feb. 23, March 30, April 27 and June 1.

AGSA enrollment coming up
     ALPINE — Alpine Girls Softball will be enrolling on Dec. 9, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Boulder Oaks Elementary School for the early bird special of $70. There will also be registration on Jan. 4, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Jan. 6, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Boulder Oaks for $80.
     Try-outs will be Saturday, Jan. 13, at Joan Mac Queen Middle School. There will be a late registration after Jan. 20, to be announced for $125. For ages six years and under, the registration fee is only $35.

The 10th annual Gift Bag Drive begins
     ALPINE — The 10th annual Gift Drive is now underway, looking for donations of clothes, food and children’s goods. Brown bags are being distributed around town for residents to fill with non-perishable food items, disposable diapers, kid’s videos, blankets, backpacks, clothes, toys and art supplies.
     Over 9,000 bags are given away to over 26 churches and outreach centers and have brokered thousands of dollars in donations to community organizations helping the hungry, assisting military families and needy children.

Local 4-H looking for more Amigos
     ALPINE — The Alpine Amigos 4-H is looking for interested youth between the ages of five and 19 to join the club.
     Would you love to learn more about farm animals and crafts? Come see what 4-H is all about. General Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month, 7 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center.

Voice of democracy essay contest
     ALPINE — The VFW is having a VFW Voice of Democracy Contest, for a grand prize of a $30,000 scholarship along with many others. Contestants are to write a 3 to 5 minute national patriotic speech expressing their interpretation of freedom’s challenge. The competition is open to ninth through 12th graders.

Good Shepherd will hold church-wide rummage sale
    
ALPINE — Good Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church will be holding its annual rummage sale on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the church barn located on the corner of Tavern Road and Oak Haven.
     There will lots of household items, clothing, toys and miscellaneous furniture for sale through the day.

Fall crafts show
     ALPINE — The Alpine Arts and Crafts Association will be hosting Fall Craft Shows at the Alpine community center on Nov. 18 and 19.
     The event will feature everything from hand painted country items, hand blown glass, to crochet garments.

ALFA book signing
     ALPINE — Alpine Library Friends Association is having a book signing featuring a longtime Alpine resident Catherine Hand and her book The Green Beach. The reception will take place in the ALFA Bookstore located in the Alpine Creek Shopping Center on Saturday, Nov. 18, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
     There will be a free wine and cheese reception as well as socialization time with the author and open discussion of the book. Attendees are encouraged to read the book before hand, and it is now available at the ALFA Bookstore.

Viejas holiday tree lighting
     ALPINE — Viejas Outlet center will kick off the holidays with two events on Nov. 18 and 19.
     The lighting of San Diego’s largest holiday tree will take place at 6 p.m. and will feature a performance of children from the Kumeyaay Youth Leadership Alliance, along with Mr. And Mrs. Claus. In addition Viejas Outlet Center will host the Baja Kumeyaay Native American Art and Culture demonstrations and sale from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 18 and 19 in the center’s park, near the holiday tree.

Republican Women Federated meeting
     ALPINE — Alpine/Mountain Empire Republican Women Federated will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday, Nov. 20 in the Club House at the Alpine Mobile Home Park, 2400 Alpine Blvd.
     The program will be “Operation Apron.” Aprons are signed in various colors of Sharpie pens with written messages, long or short, to the troops to lift their morale. They are distributed by the Chaplain Corps in Iraq.

Multi-congregation thanksgiving dinner
     ALPINE — The Christians of Alpine are coming together to give thanks to God for the blessings he has given. The service will be Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Alpine Community Church and will include readings from the Holy Scripture, music, prayers of thanksgiving and a homily by Pastor Tom.
     A collection will be taken to help cover food costs for the annual Christmas Dinner at the community center on Christmas Day. For information contact Father Keith Acker at 722-6535 or e-mail him.

Norwegian Bell Ringers in Pine Valley
     PINE VALLEY — Saturday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m., the Pine Valley community clubhouse will host the annual Norwegian Bell Ringers concert, sponsored by the Pine Valley Improvement Club. There will be refreshments following the performance.

Historic building tours
     ALPINE — The Alpine Town Hall and the Alpine Historical Society’s two historic buildings will be open Saturday, Nov. 25 and Sunday, Nov. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m.
     The Alpine Woman’s Club was built in 1899 and is located at 2156 Alpine Blvd. The Dr. Sophronia Nichol’s house was built in 1896 and the Capt. Adam Beaty house was built in 1899. They are located at 2116 Tavern Road. This is a great opportunity to come and explore the history of Alpine.

ACC hosts breakfast with Santa
     ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center will again host Breakfast with Santa, on Saturday Dec. 2.
     Due to popularity of the event, this year there will two sittings to accommodate everyone. Breakfast with Santa will start at 8 a.m., with pancakes, sausage and eggs; and Lunch with Santa will begin at 12:30 p.m., with hot dogs, hamburgers and chips. Food will be cook by the Alpine Knights of Columbus.
     Ticket prices are $10, which includes the price of the meal, a picture with Santa, a gift from Santa, and lots of activities. Tickets are on sale at the community center, 1830 Alpine Blvd., and reservations are required, no tickets at the door. This event sells out quickly, contact the ACC at 445-7330.

Woman’s Club hosts third annual Christmas in Alpine
     ALPINE — The Alpine Woman’s Club presents their third annual Christmas in Alpine event on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ticket holders will be able to visit a beautifully holiday decorated English Tudor, lake house, Spanish mission and more. This self-guided tour begins at the Alpine Woman’s Club, and will feature a unique boutique, refreshments and opportunity prizes.
     Tickets can be purchased for $25, Thursdays beginning Nov. 16 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. or on the day of the event starting at 9 a.m. Proceeds benefit the Alpine Woman’s Club Scholarship, Preservation and Education Foundation.

Year-round cruises
     SAN DIEGO — Carnival Cruises will launch a year-round cruise schedule with four and five day voyages to Mexico. The 2,052 passenger fun ship, Elation will depart on Thursdays for four-day cruises and Mondays and Saturdays for five day cruises. The Elation will also operate six day Mexico cruises and a 15 day Panama Canal Cruise.
     Featured ports include Cabo San Lucas, La Paz and Ensenada.
