Story time at the ALFA Bookstore
     ALPINE — Children are welcome to sit in on a special Story Time being held at the Alpine Library Friends Association Bookstore on the second and fourth Saturday of every month at 1 p.m.
     ALFA member Christine Connell will read stories appropriate for pre-school and elementary school children. This event is free for all those interested.
     The ALFA bookstore is located in the Alpine Creek Town Center, 1347 Tavern Road, in the old Hallmark Store.


Calling poets, authors and journalists

     ALPINE  — The Alpine Writer’s Guild is in the process of organizing a writing group for teens. If you are a local teenager and have an interest in writing, please contact Lillian Fisher at 445-5537.

Vacancy on the Descanso Water board of directors
     DESCANSO — Effective Oct. 17, 2006, a vacancy has occurred for the Board of Directors of the Descanso Community Water District. The Board will consider appointment at the group’s regular meeting on Friday, Dec. 1 at 9 a.m. in the Descanso Town Hall.

Seniors can take advantage of food distribution
     BACK COUNTRY — Seniors living in the Back Country who are 60 years of age of older can take advantage of a free food service program, which delivers 40-pound boxes of food to local specific points in the area.
     Residents are currently trying to get the word out and collect information about senior in the area who would like to receive a food box. The current pick-up point in the Campo/Lake Morena area is at Lake Morena Village.

CTN looking for local content
     SAN DIEGO — The County is accepting applications for grants that encourage non-profit and educational institutions to produce quality and timely half-hour video productions. Five $10,000 grants will be awarded through the Local Government Programming Video Grant Program, and finished videos will be aired on CTN, Cox channel 19, and Time Warner Channel 22.

Blood bank to visit Viejas
     ALPINE — The San Diego Blood Bank will accept blood donations at an open to the public blood drive hosted by Viejas Casino on Thursday, Dec. 7, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The blood drive will be held in the DreamCatcher Lounge at Viejas.
     All donors at this drive will be awarded a voucher for a free Whale Watching Trip donated by Helgren’s Oceanside Sportfishing & Islandia Sportfishing. Anyone who is at least 17 years old, in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds may be eligible to give blood. A good meal is recommended prior to donation.

Pony registration is beginning
     ALPINE — Registration time is here for the 2007 Alpine/Viejas Pony Baseball season. The first, early registration will take place on Saturday, Dec. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Shadow Hill Elementary School Auditorium. The early registration fee is $150.
     Other registration dates will be Saturday, Jan. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Wednesday, Jan. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m., at the same location. Registration fees for these dates will be $175. Try-out dates will be held at the Pony Field behind Shadow Hills on Jan. 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Feb. 3 from 10 a.m. to noon. Late registration at try-outs will cost $195.
     There are open positions within the league for team managers, coaches and the Pony Board. The league is also looking for sponsors and a donation of a container to store equipment.

Santa Claus is coming to town
     ALPINE — Santa arrives in Alpine on Friday, Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m., riding down Alpine Boulevard for the 11th annual Alpine Village Christmas Parade of Light.
     Everyone is invited to be in the parade, the only requirement is that your entry be decorated with lights. Lighted costumes bikes, small trucks, golf carts, lawn tractors, etcetera are encouraged.
     Participants will meet at the Alpine Women’s Club parking lot at 6 p.m. The parade will step off at 6:30 p.m. and march down Alpine Boulevard to Alpine Elementary School.
     Following the parade everyone is invited to join in the lighting of the community Christmas trees and a community sing-along, and of course the snow run.

Campo family nights
     CAMPO — The Mountain Empire Collaborative is sponsoring Campo Family Night at the Mountain Empire Community Center from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees will have a chance to meet their neighbors, have dinner, see a movie, play games, crafts and much more. They will be on Fridays, Dec. 1, Jan. 26, Feb. 23, March 30, April 27 and June 1.

Alpine Corale will host holiday concert
     ALPINE — The Alpine Chorale will be hosting its annual Family and Friends Holiday Concert on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 2 pm at Boulder Oaks Elementary School Auditorium. The community is invited to attend this free concert and stay for dessert.

AGSA enrollment coming up
     ALPINE — Alpine Girls Softball will be enrolling on Dec. 9, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Boulder Oaks Elementary School for the early bird special of $70. There will also be registration on Jan. 4, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Jan. 6, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Boulder Oaks for $80.
     Try-outs will be Saturday, Jan. 13, at Joan Mac Queen Middle School. There will be a late registration after Jan. 20, to be announced for $125. For ages six years and under, the registration fee is only $35.

The 10th annual Gift Bag Drive begins
     ALPINE — The 10th annual Gift Drive is now underway, looking for donations of clothes, food and children’s goods. Brown bags are being distributed around town for residents to fill with non-perishable food items, disposable diapers, kid’s videos, blankets, backpacks, clothes, toys and art supplies.
     Over 9,000 bags are given away to over 26 churches and outreach centers and have brokered thousands of dollars in donations to community organizations helping the hungry, assisting military families and needy children.

Marines collect Toys for Tots
     ALPINE — As always, the U.S. Marine Corps is running its holiday Toys for Tots drive this season.
     In Alpine, donations of new toys for children can be dropped off at On Line Bookkeeping & Tax Service, located at 2065 Arnold Way, suite 103. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.


Local 4-H looking for more Amigos
     ALPINE — The Alpine Amigos 4-H is looking for interested youth between the ages of five and 19 to join the club.
     Would you love to learn more about farm animals and crafts? Come see what 4-H is all about. General Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month, 7 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center.

Voice of democracy essay contest
     ALPINE — The VFW is having a VFW Voice of Democracy Contest, for a grand prize of a $30,000 scholarship along with many others. Contestants are to write a 3 to 5 minute national patriotic speech expressing their interpretation of freedom’s challenge. The competition is open to ninth through 12th graders.

ACC hosts breakfast with Santa
     ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center will again host Breakfast with Santa, on Saturday Dec. 2.
     Due to popularity of the event, this year there will two sittings to accommodate everyone. Breakfast with Santa will start at 8 a.m., with pancakes, sausage and eggs; and Lunch with Santa will begin at 12:30 p.m., with hot dogs, hamburgers and chips. Food will be cook by the Alpine Knights of Columbus.
     Ticket prices are $10, which includes the price of the meal, a picture with Santa, a gift from Santa, and lots of activities. Tickets are on sale at the community center, 1830 Alpine Blvd., and reservations are required, no tickets at the door. This event sells out quickly, contact the ACC at 445-7330.

Woman’s Club hosts third annual Christmas in Alpine
     ALPINE — The Alpine Woman’s Club presents their third annual Christmas in Alpine event on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ticket holders will be able to visit a beautifully holiday decorated English Tudor, lake house, Spanish mission and more. This self-guided tour begins at the Alpine Woman’s Club, and will feature a unique boutique, refreshments and opportunity prizes.
     Tickets can be purchased for $25, Thursdays beginning Nov. 16 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. or on the day of the event starting at 9 a.m. Proceeds benefit the Alpine Woman’s Club Scholarship, Preservation and Education Foundation.

Snow will fall at Viejas next weekend
     ALPINE — Viejas will host its annual Snow Festival next weekend, from 4 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9. More than two tons of snow will be brought in to the courtyard of the outlet center for the event.
     The snowy holiday celebration will take place by Viejas Outlet Center’s 87-foot-tall Holiday Tree with an area for snow play, sledding, singing and visits with Santa Claus and Crystal, The Ice Princess. The event is free but visitors are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy or canned food item for the Salvation Army’s East County Food and Toy Drive.
     In addition to the Snow Festival, visitors can enjoy a special holiday performance of the “Legend of the Ice Princess” at 7:30 p.m.
     From Dec. 16-24, visitors can also share a smile and a free photo with Santa Claus by the Viejas Holiday Tree. Bring your own camera and the Viejas staff will take the photo for free. Santa Claus is available for photos each day from noon to 7 p.m.

ACC hosts line dancing Christmas party
     ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center will host a Country line Dancing Christmas Party on Thursday, Dec. 14 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at the center, 1830 Alpine Blvd.
The evening will be a potluck with the ACC providing entrees and participants invited to bring side dishes and desserts to the dinner. Cash bar will also be available.
Tickets are $12 general admission, and $10 for seniors and ACC members. RSVP is appreciated. For more information one may contact the center at 445-7330.

Christ the King hosts Christmas Camp
     ALPINE — Christ the King Episcopal Church will host a Christmas Camp for kids Monday, Dec. 18th to Friday, Dec. 22 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
     Children ages 6-10 will experience creativity with crafts, stories, Christmas carols, fun games and meet new friends. A snack is provided. This is a Christian-themed program which is open to the community and offered by the Youth Ministry of Christ the King Episcopal Church.

Year-round cruises
     SAN DIEGO — Carnival Cruises will launch a year-round cruise schedule with four and five day voyages to Mexico. The 2,052 passenger fun ship, Elation will depart on Thursdays for four-day cruises and Mondays and Saturdays for five day cruises. The Elation will also operate six day Mexico cruises and a 15 day Panama Canal Cruise.
     Featured ports include Cabo San Lucas, La Paz and Ensenada.
