Elections bring some new faces to local groups
By Christy Scott
The Alpine Sun
More than two weeks after the midterm
elections, ballot counting in San Diego County has finally been
completed. While, in general, the absentee, provisional and
other paper ballots that were left did not sway many election
winners, their impact was felt on several local boards and
groups, where races are often won or lost by only hundreds, or
even dozens of votes.
Every local board from Alpine to the Back Country will
see new faces at the table come January. While incumbents
generally did well in local races this election, many electors
voted for change and possibly more balance on local boards.
The face of the Alpine Planning Group will change
slightly in the New Year. Although incumbents Brad Bailey and
Jim Easterling and Jane Fitz held on to their positions on the
board, David Waitley was not re-elected to the group. Newcomers
George Barnett, Louis Russo, Chuck Taylor and Linda Richards
will join the new ranks of the APG at the January meeting.
In Campo, “slow-growth” incumbents Bev Esry, Bill Slaff
and Patricia Noblitt won re-election, while Jean Bates did no
regain her seat on the Campo/Lake Morena Planning Group.
Lifetime area resident Richard Northcote joins the ranks of the
board as the newest member in January.
On the newly formed Boulevard Community Planning Group,
Donna Tisdale and Pat Stuart will continue to serve, both
long-time members of the old sponsor group. The two women will
be joined by newcomer Darlene Koczka at the first meeting of the
planning group next year.
While the Pine Valley Planning Group race was not on
the ballot this election due to a lack of candidates — only five
people running for six seats on the board — a new face will be
joining the group. Matt Rabasco will join incumbents Vern
Denham, Cherry Diefenbach, Terry Glardon and Carol Johnson on
the Pine Valley board. The sixth empty seat on the board will
remain open until the board appoints an interested resident to
the spot.
The Alpine Union School District board will be
changing, with the departure of Mary Wiggins and Steve Hunyar.
Incumbent Scott Barr was re-elected to his seat on the board.
Newcomers Gina Henke and Eric Wray will join the AUSD board
ranks in the New Year.
Several new faces will be joining the Mountain Empire
Unified School District board come January. Ken Northcote held
on to his area-three seat on the board, while area-five
representative Jim Banks will be replaced in the New Year by top
vote getter Danny Nunez. Other new faces on the board will be
area-one rep Fred Kamper and area-four rep Beryl Buchanan.
On the Grossmont Union High School District board, Jim
Kelly held on to his seat and board presidency. Newcomers
Richard Hoy and Robert Shield will take up seats on the board in
January.
Local Joel Anderson
victorious for 77th State Assembly
Following his victory in the 77th State
Assembly campaign, Joel Anderson issued the following statement
from Election Central:
“I simply want to thank the citizens of the 77th
Assembly District for trusting me with their vote. I am
privileged to represent them in Sacramento and I look forward to
serving the needs of our community.
“A special thanks, as well, to the many volunteers and
supporters who put in many long hours in the campaign – your
help and guidance was invaluable.
“The voters have clearly indicated they believe I will
best represent their values in Sacramento. I will work hard to
prove them right, and I will work hard with my colleagues on
both sides of the aisle to ensure we accomplish much for San
Diego.
“Some political watchers said this race was decided in
the primary election. I don’t buy that, and I’ve never taken the
outcome – or the citizens of this district – for granted. The
voters deserve my best, and that’s why I’ve never stopped
working since June on the campaign.
“As I go to Sacramento, I will not forget those two
things: To never take any of my constituents for granted and
never stop working hard for the citizens of the 77th Assembly
District and San Diego.”
