ALPINE — The Alpine Quiz Kids have returned this year for more brain busting fun amongst local students. Alpine’s own radio station, Alpine Lite, 107.9 FM has hosted the last two, “Alpine Quiz Kids” at Alpine Elementary School as they are revving up for this school year.
Beginning last year, Gerry Turro carefully choreographed a trivia based question and answer game show, that spotlights two teams of students from one of our Alpine schools, who compete in this genuine classic and entertaining game. Marti Gable helps out as the official judge as they visit each of our schools to give the students a chance to be contestants on the radio.
Turro acts as the question master, and poses questions to the participating students that include, history, science, math, language arts, T.V., movies and other miscellaneous trivia of the ages.
Some of the questions include: “Who discovered the law of gravity?” “What forms over an ocean, tornadoes, or hurricanes?”, and “In the Peanuts cartoons, is Lucy usually nice or mean to Charley Brown?” Also thrown into the question mix are technology based and financial questions such as, “What does the initials, CD, mean to a music lover?” and “Whose face appears on a dime?”
On Oct. 21, Garrett Spence from Ms. Valad’s class, and Talon Dow from Ms. McGillicuddy’s and Ms. Fordem class team off against Isaac Myres and Sydney Olivares, also from Ms. McGillicuddy’s class.
Both teams courageously took on this battle of the wits that lasted 30 minutes, as Turro fired miscellaneous questions that artfully switched between the two teams accordingly. In this “Alpine Quiz Kids” round, Sydney and Isaac won.
On Oct. 28, the Alpine Quiz Kids show pitted girls against the boys. These students, all from Ms. McGillicuddy’s class, were ready for the challenge. Jake Palmer John Sjoquist,, Sara Toulouie and Jenna Barker all proclaimed Science as a favorite subject.
Unfortunately in this round, the boys took the game even though the last question of the game was correctly albeit unsurely answered by the girls. Turro airs this show on scheduled Saturday mornings at 9 a.m.
This is the second year for the Quiz Kids program, sponsored by Alpine Family Medicine. More than 100 students have participated in the program so far.
