ADA and quality teachers are issues for MEUSD  
Nine candidates are vying for four seats on the Mountain Empire Unified School District board of trustees. In the sometimes-embattled district many issues are of great concern to parents and residents.  

Local fire safe council sweeps awards event  
A local fire safe council swept a special awards event held Saturday, Sept. 30. The Fire Safe Council of San Diego County held its First annual Fire Safe San Diego Recognition Event. Volunteers who have obtained funding and implemented fire-safety projects to protect their communities were honored at the event at Dos Picos County Park in Ramona. 

Sunrise routes could bisect Back Country
Due to an order from the state Public Utilities Commission, San Diego Gas & Electric has filed three alternate routes for its proposed Sunrise Powerlink that don’t cross Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. One of those routes could cut a swath of gigantic conduit towers along a route through the Back Country.   

Former Jacumba man found guilty of molesting 13-year-old girl
A former Jacumba man and teacher was remanded to jail Friday, Oct. 6, after a jury found him guilty of six counts of molesting a 13-year-old girl.  

Local educators honored at televised Salute to Teachers awards ceremony
San Diego County teachers were honored last weekend as part of the 33rd annual Teacher of the Year recognition program. For the past 16 years, the event has stepped up to a black-tie awards ceremony, aired lived on local television by Cox Communications. 
 
Healing arts and global music fest in Alpine this weekend  
On Oct. 14, the healing arts and global music fest, also known as the HAGfest, will ascend upon Alpine at the wide, open field off the Interstate 8 interchange. The field is north of I-8 on Tavern Road at the Tom Dyke Park. 

Alpiners have a chance to meet GUHSD candidates
The Alpine High School Citizens Committee, in conjunction with Soroptimist International and The Alpine Sun, will host GUHSD candidate forum on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at the Alpine Community Center.

New pastor at ACC
The congregation of the Alpine Community Church welcomed its new interim pastor, the Reverend Tom Truscott and his wife Sue, last Sunday when he conducted the worship service and greeted church members and friends.

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors declared Sept. 26 to be Chief Bob Pfohl day in San Diego County.

Ranchito proposed permanent road division fails
Property owners who would have been part of the Ranchito Roads permanent road division zone in Alpine rejected a proposal to create that road maintenance area.

GUHSD names CBOC appointees
At a Special Board Meeting the Governing Board of the Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) approved the appointments of two new members to its independent Citizens Bond Oversight Committee (CBOC).

14th annual Vaquero Days will benefit local youth groups
For 14 years, the annual Vaquero Days held in Descanso has honored California’s unusual and unique blend of Spanish and Western heritage.

Supervisors vacate unbuilt and unused Jacumba alley easements

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 on Sept. 27 to vacate two block-long alley easements in Jacumba.
