Calling poets, authors and journalists
     ALPINE  — The Alpine Writer’s Guild is in the process of organizing a writing group for teens. If you are a local teenager and have an interest in writing, please contact Lillian Fisher at 445-5537.

CTN looking for local content
     SAN DIEGO — The County is accepting applications for grants that encourage non-profit and educational institutions to produce quality and timely half-hour video productions. Five $10,000 grants will be awarded through the Local Government Programming Video Grant Program, and finished videos will be aired on CTN, Cox channel 19, and Time Warner Channel 22.

AUSD PTA sponsoring workshops
     ALPINE — The Alpine School District’s PTA are sponsoring a series of workshops for parents presented by the Becker Institute, Inc., and are designed to address attitudes for development of self-reliant, responsible youths.
     Pre-registration is required and is limited. The price is $80 per couple and $50 per individual and registration is available at AES, SHES, BOES, CELC, and JMMS school offices.
     The two remaining classes will be presented at the Boulder Oaks Elementary School Auditorium on Thursday, Oct. 19, and 26, from 6 to 8 p.m.

ALPS awards will celebrate local residents and groups
     ALPINE — The Dreamcatcher lounge at Viejas will host the 12th annual Alpine Leadership and Public Service awards on Wednesday, Oct. 18.

Third annual Between the Stripes fund raiser
     ALPINE — Lions, Tigers and Bears will hold its third annual Between the Stripes fund raiser on Oct. 14 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the big cat rescue.
     The event will feature News 8’s Larry Himmel as the Emcee, live entertainment, door and raffle prizes and a chance to visit with the cats.
     The meal will be catered at this year’s event so RSVPs are requested by Oct. 7. For more information once may check online at www.lionstigersandbears.org, or call 659-8078.

HAG fest coming this weekend
     ALPINE — The Alpine Artists Association is presenting the Healing, Arts, and Global Music Fest, on Oct. 14, at the Tom Dyke Park located north of the Tavern Road exit.

Community center host monthly dance classes
     ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center continues to host monthly dance lessons for those who are interested.
     The next class will be held Saturday, Oct. 14 from 7 to 10 p.m. Participants will learn the Cha-Cha with Luis Sumaya, as well as a refresher in Swing dancing.
     The two-hour lesson costs $10, $8 for seniors and ACC members. For more information one may contact the community center at 445-2722.

13th annual Harvest Craft Festival goes this weekend
     ALPINE — The 13th annual Alpine Country Gifts and Crafts Harvest Festival will take place at the Alpine Woman’s Club beginning Thursday Oct. 12 and running until Sunday, Oct. 15.
     The show will be open Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
     The Alpine Woman’s Club is located right in the center of town at 2156 Alpine Blvd.

Christ the King holds annual English Tea
     ALPINE — This year’s annual English Tea, hosted by Christ the King Episcopal Church, will take place Saturday, Oct. 21 at the church, 1460 Midway Dr.
     Tickets for the tea are $15 and include tea, sandwiches, scones, and entertainment provided by harpist, Sylvia Lorraine Hartman, and Flautist, Melissa Hartman.

14th annual Vaquero Days coming up
     DESCANSO — The 14th annual Vaquero Days will be held at Merrigan Ranch 25077 Viejas Blvd., on Oct. 21 and 22. The event pays tribute to early Californians with music, poetry and competitions.
     Visitors will enjoy people in period dress and various vendors offering everything from art to a western style barbecue. Although there is something for everyone, the emphasis will be on youth and proceeds will be given to the Alpine Amigos 4-H Club and the Mountain Empire Future Farmers of America.
     The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. rain or shine. Adult admission is $10, children and parking are free. For information visit www.vaquerodays.org.

 
 

Poll workers needed for November election
     SAN DIEGO — Poll workers are needed for Election Day. Workers are paid $75 to $150 depending upon their type of assignment and additional $15 for bilingual speakers in Filipino, Spanish or Vietnamese. You can also receive compensation for hosting a polling place. For information call (858) 565-5800.
     Temporary election workers are also needed to sort, inspect and assemble supplies, answer phones and enter data. For information call (858) 694-3426.
     You can also become a student poll worker by contacting your government teacher or school official and ask to be nominated. If your school is not participating in the project, ask your teacher to contact the Registrar of Voters office to discuss participation. You must be at least 16 years of age and have a GPA of 2.5.

Honorary mayor election is on now
     ALPINE — It is Alpine’s Honorary Mayor election time. Any Adult is allowed to run or be nominated as long as they live or work in Alpine. A vote is one dollar and voters can vote as many times as they wish. The candidate with the most “cents” wins.
     All votes must be turned in to the Alpine Chamber by Dec. 1 at 5 p.m., and the winner will be announced on Dec. 5 at the Holiday Breakfast hosted by Viejas Enterprises.
     All money raised is used to help schools fund projects on their wish lists. For more information contact the Alpine Chambers 445-2722.

Local 4-H looking for more Amigos
     ALPINE — The Alpine Amigos 4-H is looking for interested youth between the ages of five and 19 to join the club.
     Would you love to learn more about farm animals and crafts? Come see what 4-H is all about.
     General Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month, 7 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center.

Campo candidate open for meet and greet
     CAMPO — Denise Morse, Candidate for the Lake Morena/Campo Planning Group invites all residents to discuss our community’s issues each Sunday in October from 2 to 4 p.m., at 33402 Highway 94 in Campo.
There will be refreshments for visitors.

ACT holding auditions
     ALPINE — The Alpine Community Theater group (ACT) will be holding auditions for a musical presentation, taking place over the winter holidays.
     Anyone between the ages of 11 and 99 who would like to sing or dance in the holiday show should attend auditions on Saturday, Oct. 14 in room 14 at Boulder Oaks Elementary School.

CELC hosts Disney quiz night
     ALPINE — The Creekside Early Learning Center PTA will host Disney Quiz Night on Oct. 13 at the Viejas Dreamcatcher Lounge. The adult only event begins with cocktails and refreshments from 5 to 6 p.m. and auctions and games from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person or $100 for a table of eight. Proceeds will benefit Creekside Early Learning Center.

Annual Silver Tea pouring this weekend
     ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center Auxiliary will host the annual Silver Tea on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Viejas Dreamcatcher Room.
     The tea will begin at 11 a.m. There will be a silent auction for gift baskets, and the centerpiece on each table will also be auctioned off.

Blessing ceremony offered for your pets
     ALPINE — Interested pet owners can bring their furry friends to a special blessing ceremony in honor of St. Francis of Assisi at Christ the King Episcopal Church, located at 1460 Midway Drive in Alpine.
     There will be hot dogs and lemonade available for participants.

Los Coches school hosts family night
     EL CAJON — Los Coches Creek Middle School, located at 9669 Dunbar Lane, will host a family sports night on Friday, Oct. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m.
     The event will feature lots of different sports activities, raffle and auction opportunities, as well as food being served throughout the evening.

History in the making at Old 80 dedication
     ALPINE — The Alpine Women’s Club is hosting the dedication of the Historic California Old Highway 80 at 10 a.m. on Oct. 21. Special activities will be held surrounding designation of segments of U.S. Highway 80 for significance and importance in the development of California.
     A community picture will be taken in front of the Woman’s Club at 11 a.m. to memorialize the event. T-shirts with the official Historic U.S. Highway Route 80 logo are available now and are encouraged to be worn in the picture. All pre-ordered shirts will be available at the Alpine Chamber on Oct. 2.

Curves honors breast cancer awareness month
     ALPINE — October is breast cancer awareness month and Curves for Women is offering zero enrollment fees for clients, Oct. 16 to 21, with the proof of a mammogram.
