Seniors can take advantage of food distribution
BACK COUNTRY — Seniors living in the Back Country who are 60 years of age of older can take advantage of a free food service program, which delivers 40-pound boxes of food to local specific points in the area.
Residents are currently trying to get the word out and collect information about senior in the area who would like to receive a food box. The current pick-up point in the Campo/Lake Morena area is at Lake Morena Village.

History in the making at Old 80 dedication
ALPINE — The Alpine Women’s Club is hosting the dedication of the Historic California Old Highway 80 at 10 a.m. on Oct. 21. Special activities will be held surrounding designation of segments of U.S. Highway 80 for significance and importance in the development of California.
A community picture will be taken in front of the Woman’s Club at 11 a.m. to memorialize the event. T-shirts with the official Historic U.S. Highway Route 80 logo are available now and are encouraged to be worn in the picture. All pre-ordered shirts will be available at the Alpine Chamber on Oct. 2.

Christ the King holds annual English Tea
ALPINE — This year’s annual English Tea, hosted by Christ the King Episcopal Church, will take place Saturday, Oct. 21 at the church, 1460 Midway Dr.
Tickets for the tea are $15 and include tea, sandwiches, scones, and entertainment provided by harpist, Sylvia Lorraine Hartman, and Flautist, Melissa Hartman.

Senior health fair coming to Alpine
ALPINE — On Thursday, Oct. 26, The Alpine Community Center will host a senior health fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be free health screenings. Information, senior and community services, home care services, volunteer opportunities, free giveaways and also flu shots for seniors and high-risk adults. A two-dollar donation is requested for the flu shots.

Costume contest at Viejas
ALPINE — There will be a free Halloween Costume Contest at Viejas Outlet Center on Oct. 28, 2 to 4 p.m. The contest is ages 14 and under and registration begins at 1:30 p.m. Entries are free and 100 dollar gift certificates will be given to winners of each age group.

Local 4-H looking for more Amigos
ALPINE — The Alpine Amigos 4-H is looking for interested youth between the ages of five and 19 to join the club.
Would you love to learn more about farm animals and crafts? Come see what 4-H is all about. General Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month, 7 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center.

AUSD PTA sponsoring workshops
ALPINE — The Alpine School District’s PTA are sponsoring a series of workshops for parents presented by the Becker Institute, Inc., and are designed to address youth and adult attitudes for development of self-reliant, responsible youths.
Pre-registration is required and is limited. The price is $80 per couple and $50 per individual and registration is available at AES, SHES, BOES, CELC, and JMMS school offices. The PTA is arranging on site childcare.
The two remaining classes will be presented at the Boulder Oaks Elementary School Auditorium on Thursday, Oct. 19, and 26, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Shadow Hills Fall Festival coming up
ALPINE — This year’s annual Fall Festival at Shadow Hills Elementary School will take place on Friday, Oct. 27 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Historical buildings open for viewing
ALPINE — The Alpine Town Hall and the Alpine Historical Society’s two historic buildings will be open to the public on Saturday, Oct. 28 and Sunday, Oct. 29 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The Town Hall, owned and operated by the Alpine Woman’s Club, was built in 1899 and is located at 2156 Alpine Blvd. The Dr. Sophronia Nichol’s House was built in 1896 and the Capt Adam Beaty house was built in 1899. They are both located at 2116 Tavern Road. Just follow the signs to the Museum.

MOM’s club holding Diaper Drive
ALPINE — Through Nov. 1, the MOMS Club of Alpine and Mountain Empire is conducting a Diaper Drive to benefit infants who are victims of domestic violence or sexual abuse. They are seeking un-opened packages of ointments and wipes along with diapers. Opened packages of unused diapers are all right also and can be turned in at Scrapbook Sensation (2249 Alpine Blvd.), California Band & Trust (2250 Alpine Blvd.) and the Library.

Poll workers needed for November election
SAN DIEGO — Poll workers are needed for Election Day. Workers are paid $75 to $150 depending upon their type of assignment and additional $15 for bilingual speakers in Filipino, Spanish or Vietnamese. You can also receive compensation for hosting a polling place. For information call (858) 565-5800.
Temporary election workers are also needed to sort, inspect and assemble supplies, answer phones and enter data. For information call (858) 694-3426.
You can also become a student poll worker by contacting your government teacher or school official and ask to be nominated. If your school is not participating in the project, ask your teacher to contact the Registrar of Voters office to discuss participation. You must be at least 16 years of age and have a GPA of 2.5.

CTN looking for local content
SAN DIEGO — The County is accepting applications for grants that encourage non-profit and educational institutions to produce quality and timely half-hour video productions. Five $10,000 grants will be awarded through the Local Government Programming Video Grant Program, and finished videos will be aired on CTN, Cox channel 19, and Time Warner Channel 22.

14th annual Vaquero Days coming up
DESCANSO — The 14th annual Vaquero Days will be held at Merrigan Ranch 25077 Viejas Blvd., on Oct. 21 and 22. The event pays tribute to early Californians with music, poetry and competitions.
Visitors will enjoy people in period dress and various vendors offering everything from art to a western style barbecue. Although there is something for everyone, the emphasis will be on youth and proceeds will be given to the Alpine Amigos 4-H Club and the Mountain Empire Future Farmers of America.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. rain or shine. Adult admission is $10, children and parking are free. For information visit www.vaquerodays.org.

Senate candidate hosts western round-up
ALPINE — There will be an Alpine Western Round-up to benefit Mark Hanson, a candidate for 36th State Senate District. Mark will be there to talk about his plans for developing new industries and small businesses, there will be door prizes, a silent auction and cowboy cuisine in a beautiful Alpine setting. It will be hosted at 3 p.m. at 1781 Dewitt Estates Road in Alpine on Saturday, Oct. 21.
Donations will be accepted, and guests are asked to RSVP by Oct. 19. For information or to RSVP call 722-6475.

9th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk
SAN DIEGO — The ninth annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer American Cancer Society’s 4.5 mile walk through Balboa Park on Sunday Oct. 22. The walk is non-competitive; family oriented and includes a scenic portion of route 163. Registration begins at 7:15 a.m. at the corner of Sith and Laurel and the walk begins at 8:30 a.m.
There is no registration fee but walkers are encouraged to raise pledges of at least $100. The money raised could bring help and hope to the nearly 2,000 San Diego women who will receive a breast cancer diagnosis in the coming year.

Campo candidate open for meet and greet
CAMPO — Denise Morse, Candidate for the Lake Morena/Campo Planning Group invites all residents to discuss our community’s issues each Sunday in October from 2 to 4 p.m., at 33402 Highway 94 in Campo.

ALPINE — October is breast cancer awareness month and Curves for Women is offering zero enrollment fees for clients, Oct. 16 to 21, with the proof of a mammogram.

GUHSD to host career night
EL CAJON — The Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) is hosting its third annual “Got Plans?” Career and College Fair for 9-12th grade students and parents on Tuesday, Oct. 24, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Valhalla High School.
Admissions representatives from over 60 public and private universities, community colleges, vocational schools, and the military will be on hand. Attendees may attend up to three half-hour workshops that discuss options available to students after high school. Some sessions will be offered in Spanish.
