ALPINE — The Alpine High School Citizens Committee, in
conjunction with Soroptimist International and The Alpine Sun,
will host GUHSD candidate forum on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at the Alpine
Community Center.
Alpine residents and parents will have the opportunity
to hear from candidates who are running for seats on the Grossmont
Union High School District. As a new high school in Alpine will be
part of Grossmont district, the members of this board will be
making the final decisions regarding where it goes and when.
Six candidates are vying for three seats on the GUHSD
board. The district has 11 comprehensive high schools and about
24,500 students.
Jim Kelly, 51, is the lone incumbent running. He has
been board president since taking office in 2002.
The other candidates in the race are Ken Sobel, 52, a
lawyer from Spring Valley; Dick Hoy, 62, a retired Santana High
School teacher from La Mesa; Andrew Sundstrom, 38, a Lemon Grove
school district custodian from Santee; Robert Shield, 48, a
Lakeside school district teacher who lives in Lakeside; and Shari
Groce, 46, an aerospace design engineer from Santee.
The local forum will be a chance for all interested
residents to meet their GUHSD candidates and pose some the
important questions. Residents will be able to submit questions
and candidates will each have one minute to respond.
The event will take place at the Alpine Community
Center, at 1830 Alpine 1830 Alpine Blvd., on Tuesday, Oct 17,
beginning at 6:30 p.m. All six of the GUHSD candidates have been
invited to the public forum. A strong community showing is
important to show how important it is to our community to build a
high school in Alpine.
