VFW holds vigil, annual
deep-pit barbecue
ALPINE — The Bert
Fuller VFW Post 9578 and Ladies Auxiliary are presenting a
Candlelight Vigil honoring POW/MIA which are members of the
military that continue to be classified as Prisoners of War or
Missing In Action.
The ceremony will be held Friday evening, Sept. 15 at 4
p.m. at the post, located at 844 Tavern Road in.
On Saturday, Sept. 16, the VFW is sponsoring its annual
Deep Pit Pork-Beef-Turkey Barbecue from 1 to 5 p.m. This event
is open to the public. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at
the door. There will be live music provided by Uncle Bob and
the Earthmovers.
JMMS DC trip filling up quickly
ALPINE — On Thursday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 pm at the Alpine
Elementary School auditorium, a registration meeting and
presentation will be held by Holt Travel & Tours to share
information with Joan Mac Queen eighth grade students and
parents about next year’s annual educational East Coast tour.
The historical and educational destinations on this 8-day
trip are historic Virginia, Washington, D.C., the Amish
Country, and New York City. Fund raising opportunities will
also be discussed.
The trip will take place during Spring Break on March 31
through April 1.

Republican Women
President to speak at Alpine meeting
ALPINE — The San Diego County Republican Women,
Federated President Bonnie Webb, will speak at the
Alpine/Mountain Empire Republican Women, Federated’s regular
meeting, on Monday, Sept. 18.
The meeting is held in the clubhouse of the Alpine
Mobile Home Park. The social starts at 10:30 a.m. and the
business meeting will being at 11 a.m.
VFW goes Hog Wild
CAMPO — The famous Hog Wild celebration return on
Saturday, Sept. 30, hosted by the Mountain Empire VFW.
Gates open at noon and food will be served at 2 p.m. Cost
for members and children is $5, and for non-members $8. Active
military members with ID will get in for free.
Live music will be provided by Blue Dawg from 1 to 5 p.m.

Alpine Art Festival coming in September
ALPINE — The second annual Alpine Art Festival will be
held Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Alpine Community Center, from

Third annual
Between the Stripes fund raiser
ALPINE — Lions, Tigers and Bears will hold its third
annual Between the Stripes fund raiser on Oct. 14 from 1 to 5
p.m. at the big cat rescue.
The event will feature News 8’s Larry Himmel as the
Emcee, live entertainment, door and raffle prizes and a chance
to visit with the cats.
The meal will be catered at this year’s event so RSVPs

Community read-in at
Joan Mac Queen
ALPINE — Joan Mac Queen Middle School will host a
community read-in on Thursday, Sept.14, at 6 p.m.
The read-in started in the December following the Cedar
fire as an event to bring the community back together
following that disaster. JMMS has held the event every year
since. Donna Pardue, the librarian at JMMS is coordinating.

Cancer benefit
held at Cottage
ALPINE — The Cottage on the Boulevard will host a
Leukemia benefit on Sunday, Sept. 17 at the shop, 2363 Alpine
Blvd., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Everything at the cottage will be discounted 25 percent
throughout the day. A gift basket raffle and all tips from the
event will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of San
Diego. Tickets for the raffle are on sale until the 17th.

Historic
buildings open for viewing
ALPINE — The Alpine Town Hall and the Alpine Historical
Society’s two historic buildings will be open to the public on
Saturday, Sept. 23 and Sunday, Sept. 24, from 2 to 4 p.m.
The Town Hall, owned and operated by the Alpine Woman’s
Club, was built in 1899 and is located at 2156 Alpine Blvd.
The Dr. Sophronia Nichol’s House was built in 1896 and
the Capt. Adam Beaty house was built in 1899. They are both
located at 2116 Tavern Road. Just follow the signs to the
Museum.

Days will fill four weekends
ALPINE — The Alpine Viejas Days’ celebrations begin
Friday Sept. 29 with A Taste of Alpine and continue the
following four weekends.
Community gatherings for various events, such as the
Southern California Center for Youth, Nature, Arts’ second
annual Art Festival Sept. 30 at the Alpine Community Center;
Alpine Kiwanis’ Chili Cook-off, and Alpine Stagecoach Lions’
Viejas Days’ Parade Oct. 7; the Alpine Arts Association’s
Healing, Art and Global (HAG) Festival Oct. 14; and the
dedication of Historical Old Highway 80 on Oct. 21.

Alpine Kiwanis to
host chili cook-off
ALPINE — The Kiwanis Club of Alpine will host its Fifth
Annual Chili Cook-off on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 11 a.m. to 3
p.m. at the Alpine Community Center following the Viejas Day
Parade.
The event will include music, beer, wine, soft drinks,
water, food sales, children’s entertainment, and of course
chili.
Pre-registration of chili cookers can be made by calling
Jim at 890-2283. Application deadline is Sept. 9, and proceeds
will benefit the Alpine Community Center.

Days Parade coming in October
ALPINE — The Alpine Stagecoach Lions seek participants
for the Alpine Viejas Days Parade 10 a.m., Sat., Oct.7.
Deadline for participants to enter is Sept. 20, and Aug.
25 for feature story in the parade booklet.

HAG fest coming
in October
ALPINE — The Alpine Artists Association is presenting the
Healing, Arts, and Global Music Fest, on Oct. 14, at the
life-flight arena at the Tavern Road exit.
Volunteers are welcome and vendors with eco-friendly
policies are invited to apply. Art made from recycled
materials will be featured in a free exhibit gallery space at
the fest.

Annual Silver Tea
coming in October
ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center Auxiliary will
host the annual Silver Tea on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Viejas
Dreamcatcher Room.
The tea will begin at 11 a.m. There will be a silent
auction for gift baskets, and the centerpiece on each table
will also be auctioned off.
