SAN DIEGO — The County is accepting applications for
grants that encourage non-profit and educational institutions
to produce quality and timely half-hour video productions.
Five $10,000 grants will be awarded through the Local
Government Programming Video Grant Program, and finished
videos will be aired on CTN, Cox channel 19, and Time Warner
Channel 22.

Honorary mayor
election is coming up
ALPINE — It is Alpine’s Honorary Mayor election time. Any
Adult is allowed to run or be nominated as long as they live
or work in Alpine. A vote is one dollar and voters can vote as
many times as they wish. The candidate with the most “cents”
wins. All votes must be turned in to the Alpine Chamber by
Dec. 1 at 5 p.m., and the winner will be announced on Dec. 5
at the Holiday Breakfast hosted by Viejas Enterprises.
All money raised is used to help schools fund projects on
their wish lists.

Festival is this weekend
ALPINE — The second annual Alpine Art Festival will be held
Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Alpine Community Center, from 10
a.m. to 5 p.m.

Classic guitarist
to play at ALFA bookstore
ALPINE — Classical guitarist Fred Benedetti will be
playing at the Alpine Library Friends Bookstore in the Alpine
Creek Town Center on Sept. 30, at 2p.m. The free, Saturday
afternoon concert is sponsored by the Alpine County Library
and Alpine Library Friends Association. Be sure to get there

Alpine Kiwanis to
host chili cook-off
ALPINE — The Kiwanis Club of Alpine will host its Fifth
Annual Chili Cook-off on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 11 a.m. to 3
p.m. at the Alpine Community Center following the Viejas Day
Parade.
The event will include music, beer, wine, soft drinks,
water, food sales, children’s entertainment, and of course
chili. Proceeds from the event will benefit the local Kiwanis.

ALPINE — Mountain Health will be holding a Blood Drive
Wednesday, Oct. 11, 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Alpine Family

Donors must be over the age of 18 and have a photo ID.

HAG fest coming
in October
ALPINE — The Alpine Artists Association is presenting the
Healing, Arts, and Global Music Fest, on Oct. 14, at the
life-flight arena at the Tavern Road exit.
Volunteers are welcome and vendors with eco-friendly
policies are invited to apply. Art made from recycled
materials will be featured in a free exhibit space at the
fest.

14th annual
Vaquero Days coming up
DESCANSO — The 14th annual Vaquero Days will be held at
Merrigan Ranch 25077 Viejas Blvd., on Oct. 21 and 22. The
event pays tribute to early Californians with music, poetry
and competitions.
Visitors will enjoy people in period dress and various
vendors offering everything from art to a western style
barbecue. Although there is something for everyone, the
emphasis will be on youth and proceeds will be given to the
Alpine Amigos 4-H Club and the Mountain Empire Future Farmers
of America.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. rain or shine.

Third annual
Between the Stripes fund raiser
ALPINE — Lions, Tigers and Bears will hold its third
annual Between the Stripes fund raiser on Oct. 14 from 1 to 5
p.m. at the big cat rescue.
The event will feature News 8’s Larry Himmel as the
Emcee, live entertainment, door and raffle prizes and a chance
to visit with the cats.
The meal will be catered at this year’s event so RSVPs

Annual Silver Tea
coming in October
ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center Auxiliary will host
the annual Silver Tea on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Viejas
Dreamcatcher Room.
The tea will begin at 11 a.m. There will be a silent
auction for gift baskets, and the centerpiece on each table
will also be auctioned off.

Poll workers needed for
November election
SAN DIEGO — Poll workers are needed for Election Day.
Workers are paid $75 to $150 depending upon their type of
assignment and additional $15 for bilingual speakers in
Filipino, Spanish or Vietnamese. You can also receive
compensation for hosting a polling place. For information call

Temporary election workers are also needed to sort,
inspect and assemble supplies, answer phones and enter data.

You can also become a student poll worker by contacting
your government teacher or school official and ask to be
nominated. If your school is not participating in the project,
ask your teacher to contact the Registrar of Voters office to
discuss participation. You must be at least 16 years of age
and have a GPA of 2.5.
Seniors can take
advantage of food distribution
BACK COUNTRY — Seniors living in the Back Country who
are 60 years of age of older can take advantage of a free food
service program, which delivers 40-pound boxes of food to
local specific points in the area.
Residents are currently trying to get the word out and
collect information about senior in the area who would like to
receive a food box. The current pick-up point in the
Campo/Lake Morena area is at Lake Morena Village.

MOM’s club
holding Diaper Drive
ALPINE — From Sept. 18 through Nov. 1, the MOMS Club of
Alpine and Mountain Empire will be conducting a Diaper Drive
to benefit infants who are victims of domestic violence or
sexual abuse. They are seeking un-opened packages of ointments
and wipes along with diapers. Opened packages of unused
diapers are all right also and can be turned in at Scrapbook
Sensation (2249 Alpine Blvd.), California Band & Trust (2250
Alpine Blvd.) and the Library.

for more Amigos
ALPINE — The Alpine Amigos 4-H is looking for
interested youth between the ages of five and 19 to join the

VFW goes Hog Wild
CAMPO — The famous Hog Wild celebration return on
Saturday, Sept. 30, hosted by the Mountain Empire VFW.
Gates open at noon and food will be served at 2 p.m. Cost
for members and children is $5, and for non-members $8. Active
military members with ID will get in for free. Live music will
be provided by Blue Dawg, from 1 to 5 p.m.

to host Italian Night
ALPINE — Christ our Saviour Anglican Church is hosting
its First Annual Italian Night on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 5:30
– 8:30 p.m. The evening will feature Italian food, live
entertainment and door prized. The funds will be used to build
a new worship facility in Alpine. The event will be held at
Fuller Hall 2225 W. Victoria Dr., in Alpine, behind the Alpine
Community Church. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for

be honored at awards night
SAN DIEGO — On Sept. 30 the Fire Safe Council of San
Diego County along with the Resource Conservation District of
San Diego County, the County Office of Emergency Services, and
County Parks and Recreation Department will host their first
annual Fire Safe Council of San Diego County Awards event at
Dos Picos County Park. The event is to celebrate efforts made

Free day at local
forests
SAN DIEGO — In honor of National Forest Public Lands Day,
Sept. 30 will be a free day and National Forest Adventure
Passes will not be required for people visiting the Angeles,
Cleveland, San Bernardino, and Los Padres National Forests.
The free day policy was established as an Adventure Pass
Program in 1998 to ensure that visitors who could not afford
to visit National Parks would have a chance to do so. Some
fees are still required for campgrounds and group sires and
exceptions will be posted on site.

AUSD PTA
sponsoring workshops
ALPINE — The Alpine School District’s PTA are sponsoring
a series of workshops for parents presented by the Beker
Institute, Inc., and are designed to address youth and adult
attitudes for development of self-reliant, responsible youths.
Pre-registration is required and is limited. The price is
$80 per couple and $50 per individual and registration is
available at AES, SHES, BOES, CELC, and JMMS school offices.
The PTA is arranging on site childcare.
The four classes will be presented at the Boulder Oaks
Elementary School Auditorium on Thursdays, Oct. 5, 12, 19, and
26, from 6 to 8 p.m.
CELC hosts Disney
quiz night
ALPINE — The Creekside Early Learning Center PTA will
host Disney Quiz Night on Oct. 13 at the Viejas Dreamcatcher
Lounge. The adult only event begins with cocktails and
refreshments from 5 to 6 p.m. and auctions and games from 6 to
8 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person or $100 for a table of
eight. Proceeds will benefit Creekside Early Learning Center.

History in the
making at Old 80 dedication
ALPINE — The Alpine Women’s Club is hosting the
dedication of the Historic California Old Highway 80 at 10
a.m. on Oct. 21. Special activities will be held surrounding
designation of segments of U.S. Highway 80 for significance
and importance in the development of California.
A community picture will be taken in front of the Woman’s
Club at 11 a.m. to memorialize the event. T-shirts with the
official Historic U.S. Highway Route 80 logo are available now
and are encouraged to be worn in the picture. All pre-ordered
shirts will be available at the Alpine Chamber on Oct. 2.
