fire abatement inspections
ALPINE — The California Department of Forestry and Fire
Protection engine crews will be randomly inspecting structures
in their jurisdiction for violation of state and local fire
laws.
In rural areas the law requires that brush be cleared at
least 100 feet around all structures. Proper clearing around
homes and buildings would save most of the homes lost in
wildfires.
GAFSC looking for
members, volunteers
ALPINE — The Greater Alpine Fire Safe Council is looking
for interested residents who would like to take part in any of
the group’s subcommittees, as well as fill two new seats on
the group’s board.
Subcommittees will be taking on the issues of community
outreach, education, fuel management and fund raising.

celebrate Children’s Day
PINE VALLEY — Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros
(Children’s Day) is an annual celebration of children,
families and reading, a time to promote the importance of
literacy for everyone. Although officially the day is April
30, the San Diego County Library announces events throughout
April.

Community Church
ALPINE — Several activities will be taking place at
Alpine Community Church in the following months.
April 27, 28: ACC Annual Rummage sale, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., both
days.
May 12: Christian Youth Theater Musical, “American Pop,”
at 11 a.m. Show and lunch tickets are $5.
May 20: Faith Chapel Concert, 5 p.m. in the church
sanctuary. Concert and dinner is by donation.
Rescue Mission
hosts Sleepless in San Diego
The San Diego Rescue Mission will host its first annual
all-night, open-air fund raising event and community
sleep-out, Sleepless in San Diego from Saturday, April 28 at 7
p.m. to Sunday, April 29 at 8 a.m. The evening program will
feature live music and other entertainment.
All funds will be donated to the San Diego Rescue Mission
Continuum of Care for the Homeless which helps provide almost
440,000 free meals and 120,000 free nights of shelter for San
Diego’s 10,000 homeless men, women and children each year.
The event will be held at 3rd Avenue and B Street at The
San Diego Community Concourse in front of City Hall. Fore more

ALPINE — The Back Country Land Trust will be hosting
several events in the coming months.
April 27: Sunset walk in Wright’s Field: At 6 p.m. join
Geography Professor Michael Wangler for a sunset walk in
Wright’s Field to explore it’s six habitats. Parking at Joan
Mac Queen Middle School, 2001 Tavern Road.
April 28: “I Love a Clean Alpine”: From 8:30 a.m. — noon,
join BCLT in beautifying the Wright’s Field Preserve during a
Saturday morning clean up. Students will receive community
service credit. Call CHIRP office for more information.
April 29: “Sacred Earth Sacred Sky”: At 7 p.m. join BCLT
for a Sunday evening Light Installation with world-renown
artist Peter Terezakis. Enjoy the almost-full moon, relax, and
appreciate the sights and sounds of the preserve. Parking at
Joan Mac Queen Middle School. Follow the signs/lights to the
Wright’s Field Preserve. Please bring a flashlight, camp
chair, and wear appropriate footwear.

Kiwanis Club of Alpine will walk
for MS
ALPINE — The Kiwanis Club of Alpine is sending a team,
Alpine Trailblazers, down to the Embarcadero on Sunday, April
29, to participate in the 2007 Multiple Sclerosis Walk.
Walkers have their choice of taking a 5K or 10K stroll
along beautiful San Diego Bay while raising money to help
those who suffer from Multiple Sclerosis.

Second annual Campo-Lake Morena Round Up
CAMPO — The Campo-Lake Morena Business Association will host
the 2nd Annual Campo-Lake Morena Round-Up on Saturday, May 5,
at Eagles Wings Ranch, 1850 Lake Morena Dr. in Campo. Gates
open at 7 a.m. and opening ceremonies go at 9 a.m.
This is a fun-filled day of events such as, all day
Gymkhana, Wild Cow Milking, Ranch Roping, Bull Riding,
Versatile Ranch Horse Competition and more. There will also be
more than 25 vendors for food and western items. This is an
alcohol free, family event.

Annual plant sale
at Alpine Woman’s Club
ALPINE — The Alpine Woman’s Club Plant Sale will take
place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May
6 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at 2156 Alpine Blvd.
There will be a variety of plants to choose from that
grow well in East County. Proceeds from this sale goes to
their Scholarship Fund.
Sage and Songbird
is next weekend
ALPINE — Tickets for the 10th Annual Sage & Songbirds
Garden Tour, and event t-shirts, are now on sale at CHIRP
Habitat Hut, 2514 Alpine Blvd.
Six private home gardens, all bird and
butterfly-friendly, are featured on the tour, along with a
seventh raptor rehabilitation facility, and the award-winning
gardens at Viejas Outlet Center, for a total of eight
destinations.
Tickets are $15 per person, and include a map for the
self-guided tour. Tickets are valid May 4-6, and visitors may
attend all sites in one day, or a few each day, (but only one
visit per site.)
Festival theme of “Fill the Skies with Butterflies” is
depicted on a beautiful t-shirt, designed by local artist
Vanessa Rusczyk. Shirts are available at the Habitat Hut at
the price of $13.99 each, and supplies are limited.

Vintage Alpine coming in May
ALPINE — The 17th annual Alpine Kiwanis Vintage Alpine
wine tasting event will be held again this year at Summers
Past Farms on Sunday, May 6, from 1 to 4 p.m.
Vintage Alpine is a fund raising event for the Kiwanis
Club of Alpine Foundation. Tickets available now until May 5
for $45, or $50 at the door. No one under the age of 21 will
be admitted.

festivities at Christ Our Saviour
ALPINE — Christ The Saviour Anglican Church of Alpine
will host a Cinco de Mayo Fish Taco Festival on Saturday,
April 28 from 4 to 7 p.m.

door prizes, costumes and much, much, more.

ALPINE — Alpine’s Earth Day celebration,”I Love a Clean

Country Western Dinner Dance
ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center, at 1830 Alpine
Blvd., is holding a Country Western Dinner Dance on April 28,
from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Tickets are $20 per person, $15 for seniors and members.

Sumaya will give dance instructions for two line dances and

County library friends 2007 essay
contest
SAN DIEGO — The Library Friends of San Diego County
(LFSDC), an umbrella organization of Friends of the Library
groups of the branches of the San Diego County Library,
announces the 2007 topic for its annual essay contest for
students and adults: “How My Library Could Be Even Better.”
Entries may be submitted at any branch of the San Diego
County Library by Saturday, April 28. Essays should not exceed
500 words. Each participant is allowed one entry. Judging will
take place in two age categories: Students through grade 12,
and Adults.
The first place winner in each of the two divisions will
receive $100; second place winners $50; and third place
winners: $25 at a meeting of the Library Friends. All six
winners will also be recognized at an official, televised
meeting of the County Board of Supervisors.

Historical building home tours
ALPINE — The Alpine Town Hall and The Alpine Historical
Society buildings will be open to the public on Saturday,
April 28 and Sunday April 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. This is a great
opportunity to go back in time and learn more about Historic
Alpine from several knowledgeable docents.
The Town Hall, owned and operated by the Alpine Woman’s
Club, was built in 1899 and is located at 2156 Alpine Blvd.
The two historic buildings, owned and operated by the Alpine
Historical Society, are the Dr. Sophronia Nichol’s House built
in 1896 and the Capt Adam Beaty house built in 1899. They are
both located at 2116 Tavern Road. Just follow the signs to the
Museum.
7th Annual Alpine Challenge bike
ride
ALPINE — The 7th Annual Alpine Challenge bike ride will
beg held this Saturday, April 28.
Participants can register on-line for one of four rides
offered: the Pine Valley Ride (72 miles), the Descanso Ride
(62 miles), the 30-Mile Ride, or the 20-Mile Ride. The choices
provide a range of ride options for both the casual cyclists
and the more seasoned.
Proceeds benefit the Rady Children’s Hospital and the
Alpine Challenge Scholarship Fund. Each year the Fund will
finance two years of college or continuing education for two
local graduating high school students.

Mountain Empire art contest
MOUNTAIN EMPIRE —The Mountain Empire Creative Arts
Council (MECAC) is organizing an Art Contest for students K-6
who live within the Mountain Empire School District. The
contest is open to all K-6 children who live within the school
district, including alternative and home-schooled children.
The contest theme is: “Living Well and Healthfully” and
includes categories for Written, Visual Arts,
Multi-dimensional Art, and Fabric Arts. One entry per child.
Prizes will be given for first, second and third in each
category.
Art entries can be dropped off at the high school during
the week of May 7 or turned into the student’s teacher at the
elementary school. Announcement of winners will take place at
the Second Annual Mountain Empire Wellness Fair at the high
school on Thursday, May 24 at 6 p.m.

Mad Hatter Tea Party coming soon
ALPINE — Soroptimist International of Alpine will host
its annual Mad Hatter Tea Party on May 19, from noon to 3
p.m., at Fuller Hall.
Donna Feeney, owner of Donna Maria’s Tea Time will
provide the tea and food for the event. Centerpieces will be
designed and donated for auction by supporters.
Everyone attending the party is encouraged to wear an
outrageous hat and enter the “Mad Hatter Outrageous Hat
Contest.” Contestants can enter their creations in three
categories: Most beautiful, most fun and most original theme.
Cash prizes and gifts will be awarded the winners.
Cost for the Mad Hatter Tea is $35 per person. Proceeds
from the tea party benefit the various women and girls’

Woman’s Club will award
scholarships
ALPINE – The Alpine Woman’s Club, through the Alpine
Woman’s Club Scholarship, Preservation and Education
Foundation, will award five $1,000 scholarships to deserving
students in June of this year. In order to be considered for a
scholarship, an application must be received no later than May
30.
Applications are available at the Alpine Chamber of
Commerce Office, the Alpine Community Center, the Alpine
Library, Washington Mutual, California First Bank and the
Bread Basket Restaurant. Applications may also be obtained by
visiting the Alpine Woman’s Club web site,
www.members.cox.net/alpinewomansclub, or by sending a
request via e-mail to
alpinewomansclub@cox.net.
Students applying for a scholarship must: Reside in the
Alpine community; have a well-developed sense of community
participation and/or have been diligently applying themselves
in the employment area; show scholastic achievement;
demonstrate a need for financial assistance.
Recipients of the awards will be notified by telephone
and, along with their parents, will be invited to attend the
Alpine Woman’s Club Scholarship Award Presentation on June 21.
3rd annual novelty dog show
coming in June
ALPINE — The third annual Novelty Dog Show to take place
Saturday, June 2, at Tom C. Dyke Park, from 9 a.m. to noon.
Registration begins at 8 a.m.
Entry fees are $6 per class or $20 for four classes with
Ribbons and gifts awarded to first, second, and third place in
each class. Free admission to spectators. Proceeds from the
show go toward sponsoring service dogs for San Diego people
with disabilities.
