Potrero planners set conditions for Blackwater approval  
Heated exchanges between citizens and planners punctuated a two-hour meeting of the Potrero Planning Group on Thursday, Aug. 9. After taking up two controversial items on its agenda, the board found itself served with papers for yet more legal action and faced complaints from citizens alleging Brown Act and County policy violations.  

Cedar Fire rebuilds no longer encouraged to be green  
Just four years after the Cedar Fire, the Rebuild a Greener San Diego program is coming to an end. Its purpose has been to offer rebates and tax credits to 2003 fire victims who rebuild their houses to be energy efficient or include solar-powered photovoltaic (PV) systems.

Alpine fire engine battles 100,000-acre Zaca Fire
As the crew of USFS Fire Engine 46 emerged from their tents in the gray, early light of Saturday, Aug. 11, a cool fog swirled through the Zaca Fire base camp. Captain Eddie Delgado, engineer Ron Brewer, and firefighters Luis Ramirez, Rick Welder and Dana Barré joked around while they checked their equipment and waited for their day’s assignment.   

Local Relay for Life raises awareness and cash
Alpine’s second Relay for Life stepped off in the hot sun on Saturday morning, and for the next 24 hours, the field at Joan Mac Queen Middle School was alive with people walking, running, skipping and dancing around the track.  

Bruce pleads guilty, faces 21 years for shooting wife in Alpine home 
A sheriff’s deputy from Alpine pleaded guilty Tuesday, Aug. 14, to voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of his wife with his service weapon. 
 
Readers reach their goals with summer library program  
Another success has been achieved with the Library’s Summer Reading Program in Descanso. This year there were programs for small children ages three and under, age three to second grade, grade 3 to grade 5, and then a teen program. Also this year for the first time, an adult reading program was put into place.
