Albertson’s to open
doors in March 2008
The Alpine Village Center, and the new Albertson’s store
on the corner of Alpine Boulevard and South Grade Road, began
construction of the building on Aug. 13, according to Grant
Tucker Properties, the project developer. Construction has not
been easy, as rock formations have created six weeks of delays.
GUHSD begins search for new Superintendent
At a special
Grossmont Union High school District board meeting, held on Aug.
15, members clarified specifics in the choice of the new
district superintendent, and reviewed of the Citizen’s Bond
Oversight Committee role in the review and comment of the Bond
Advisory Commissions recommendations to the board for bond
expenditures.
Powerlink decision postponed at least five months
A month-long set of hearings discussing the proposed
Sunrise Powerlink has been postponed, after an admission by San
Diego Gas & Electric that it made significant errors in
estimating the benefits of its powerlink project.
Back Country goes wireless
There is great news for East County’s Back Country.
Where previously, Internet access was only a dial-up
proposition, MountainMesh has a mission to provide affordable
and reliable high-speed Wireless Internet service throughout
many of the East County areas. They are now offering a
high-speed Internet option that encompasses much of Descanso’s
most populated areas as well as some areas of Japatul and
Guatay.
81-year-old man will likely spend the rest of his life in
jail
An 81-year-old former Crest resident pleaded guilty Aug.
9 to committing a lewd act upon a minor and has agreed to accept
a life prison term, both attorneys said.

Nonprofit treasurer steals $140,000
The former president of the nonprofit agency Friends of
Jamul-Dulzura Schools surrendered Aug. 16 to Los Colinas
Detention Center, to start her 1-year jail term. She was also
ordered to pay $55,639 back to the organization for embezzling
more than $140,000 from the group over a seven-year period.
East County fire districts receive state grant for rescue
efforts
Victims of vehicle crashes in east San Diego County will
be receiving faster and more efficient help. Newly-received
emergency extrication equipment will speed the task of getting
crash victims from their cars and to the hospital.
