Local growers wanted
     ALPINE — Residents with local fruit and nut filled trees, or naturally-raised vegetables, fruits and herbs, who would like to sell their produce, are invited to call 445-5249. Please leave a message if no answer.

Alpine Amigos looking for members
     ALPINE — Are you between the ages of 5 and 19? Would you love to learn more about farm animals and crafts? Come see what 4-H is all about.
     General Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month at the Alpine Community Center.

Alpine artists needed

     ALPINE — Three events featuring local artists are coming up. Artists, musicians and poets needed for three events.
     Painting Contest: Want to see your art as you drive down the boulevard? If the answer is yes, call us. Art event at Barnes and Noble, end of August: To demonstrate and show. Performers and sellers needed for large multi-performance event in October.

Living History Day at Mt. Laguna
     MT. LAGUNA — The Laguna Mountain Visitors Center is sponsoring a Living History Day at the Red-tailed Roost Volunteer headquarters, past the 22.5 mile marker on Sunrise Highway, during Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 1 and 2.
     The event will feature continuous historical presentations starting on Saturday at 9:30 a.m., and Sunday at 10 a.m. Free Admission, donations are accepted.

Monthly hike with APG trails
     ALPINE — The APG Trails and Conservation Subcommittee has been doing a monthly hike and would like to invite all of the Alpine and Alpine area residents to join them. One of the subcommittee’s primary goals in 2007 is to compile and share a list of Alpine area trails.
     To help in exploring the area trails, subcommittee member, Keli Cadenhead has organized these monthly hikes and is welcoming the public to join in. The next hike is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 28 at 7 a.m., and is expected to finish around 10 a.m.
     Please meet at 980 Peutz Valley Road to hike up from Peutz Valley Road to the Anderson Truck Trail. For more information please contact Keli Cadenhead at 445-3955.

MECAC artist of the month
     MTN. EMPIRE — The Mountain Empire Region welcomes Dr. Don Adema as the Mountain Empire Creative Arts Council’s “Artist of the Month.”
     Join fellow artists and non-artists in the Back Country on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Pine Valley Library and learn how to achieve good health through the ART of living a balanced life that promotes emotional, physical and spiritual well-being.
     Dr. Don, who lives in Descanso, began playing the piano at age 21 and painting at age 31. His creative art background includes performing arts in theatre and choir as well as painting with pastels.

18th Annual Pow-wow coming up
     EL CAJON — Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Indians will be hosting its Traditional Gathering and 18th Annual Pow-Wow on Sept. 7-9.
     There will be up prizes, a Men’s Bird Dance for all ages, Women’s Bird Dance, and Hand Drum Contest, as well as Indian Arts & Crafts, Indian Food, and a Flag Ceremony will be on Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m.

Campo gears up to go Hog Wild
     CAMPO — Campo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2080 is gearing up for is annual Hog Wild festivities scheduled for Oct. 13. Watch for coming announcements.
     There will be live music by Blue Dawg, food, drinks, raffles, a bake sale, and much more. In the meantime don’t forget their first Friday Rib dinners, and third Saturday Steak Fry — profits always for a worthy cause.

Seniors can take advantage of food distribution
     BACK COUNTRY — Seniors living in the Back Country who are 60 years of age of older can take advantage of a free food service program, which delivers 40-pound boxes of food to local specific points in the area.
     Residents are currently trying to get the word out and collect information about senior in the area who would like to receive a food box. The current pick-up point in the Campo/Lake Morena area is at Lake Morena Village.

Calling poets, authors and journalists
     ALPINE  — The Alpine Writer’s Guild is in the process of organizing a writing group for teens. If you are a local teenager and have an interest in writing, please contact Lillian Fisher at 445-5537.

Kiwanis raises money with recycling
     ALPINE — The Kiwanis Club of Alpine is helping the Ronald McDonald House of San Diego to raise money through a recycling program. There are two methods which the club is employing; collecting pull-tabs from aluminum cans, and collecting Hotels and Motels bar soap and shampoo/conditioners.
     The money is used to help occupants of the House who have sons and daughters in the The Rady Children’s Hospital, that are suffering from cancer and other diseases. The soap and shampoo are also distributed to the occupants to help them with their daily needs.
     The Kiwanis Club of Alpine has so far collected 75 pounds of the pull-tabs.

Support group for Alpine cancer patients and caregivers

     ALPINE — This year nearly 12,000 San Diego County residents will be diagnosed with some type of cancer. In order to address their special needs and concerns, the American Cancer Society has established a support group for patients, survivors, caregivers and family members who live in Alpine and nearby communities.
     Meetings will continue throughout the year on the third Wednesday of each month. A licensed marriage/family therapist will facilitate the support group and guest speakers are being scheduled for upcoming sessions.
     Anyone who has been affected by cancer, either as a patient or a family member, is invited to this group. For reservations and for meeting dates, please call the American Cancer Society, 682-7415 or e-mail kay.clark@cancer.org.

Movies in the park
     ALPINE —Bring the family to Viejas Outlet Center Park for a fun-filled summer evening. Every Tuesday through Aug. 28, enjoy free movies on the grass from 7 – 9 p.m. Come early for each show and don’t forget your blanket!

Alpine youth theater needs actors
     ALPINE — Alpine Youth Theater needs actors for 16 parts for the three-act, comedy/farce Boarding House Reach. Actors between the ages of 12-18 are needed for the production.
     Auditions begin on Sunday, Sept. 9, between 4-6 p.m. at Christ Our Savior Anglican Church.
     For more information please call 579-1902 ahead of time. The comedy will be performed for the general public in January 2008 at the Alpine Women's Club. Everyone is welcome to audition.

Artist association hosting demos
     ALPINE — Members of the Alpine Artists Association will be speaking at Barnes and Noble, in Grossmont Center, and participating artists will be holding demonstrations of their fine art work. The artists group will be at the bookstore on Aug. 25 and 26, each day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
     Books relating to the speakers and presenters subjects will be highlighted and a portion of sales will be donated by Barnes and Noble to the Alpine Artists Association. Please mention to the cashier that your purchases are in support of the artists, and the Alpine Artists Association. 70th annual Deep Pit Barbecue
     DESCANSO — Our Lady of Light Catholic Church in Descanso will hold its 70th Annual Deep Pit Barbecue on Sunday, Sept. 2, of the Labor Day weekend.
     Parishioners will gather the night before and burn several cords of oak in a giant pit lined with fire brick and bury 1,600 pounds of seasoned beef under the coals. It will be remove the next day to be enjoyed by hundreds of people.
     Entertainment provided by the Sundance Band . There will also be games for the kids, craft booths, home made pies, a rummage sale, and a raffle. Grand prize drawing will be $1,000 in cash.
    Adult Dinners just $8, and Children $5. From I-8 exit Japatul exit (Hwy. 79/Julian) head north from off ramp, to Riverside Drive left on Riverside for about half a mile.

The great train robbery in Campo
     CAMPO — Come out and enjoy a little of the Wild West as it used to be. The Great Train Robbery and Dinner Theater: “Death rides the Stage” featuring the Back Country Players will be at the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo on Oct. 13. The train departs promptly at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
     Be prepared to guard your belongings and loved ones as you face “The Hole in the Wall Gang.” A sit down dinner will be served at the Railroad Museum following the Train ride.
     Tickets are $50 each and group tables for ten are available for $500. There will be a no-host bar for adults only. All proceeds benefit the Campo/Lake Morena Community. For more information please contact Randy Lenac at 478-5403.
