70th annual Deep Pit Barbecue
     DESCANSO — Our Lady of Light Catholic Church in Descanso will hold its 70th Annual Deep Pit Barbecue on Sunday, Sept. 2, of the Labor Day weekend.
     Parishioners will gather the night before and burn several cords of oak in a giant pit lined with fire brick and bury 1,600 pounds of seasoned beef under the coals. It will be remove the next day to be enjoyed by hundreds of people.
     Entertainment provided by the Sundance Band . There will also be games for the kids, craft booths, home made pies, a rummage sale, and a raffle. Grand prize drawing will be $1,000 in cash.
     Adult Dinners just $8, and Children $5. From I-8 exit Japatul exit (Hwy. 79/Julian) head north from off ramp, to Riverside Drive left on Riverside for about half a mile.

Living History Day at Mt. Laguna
     MT. LAGUNA — The Laguna Mountain Visitors Center is sponsoring a Living History Day at the Red-tailed Roost Volunteer headquarters, past the 22.5-mile marker on Sunrise Highway, during Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 1 and 2.
     The event will feature continuous historical presentations starting on Saturday at 9:30 a.m., and Sunday at 10 a.m. Free Admission, donations are accepted.

Barona Pow-wow
     BARONA — The 37th Annual Barona Pow-wow will be held on Friday, Aug. 31 through Sunday, Sept. 2. The Annual Barona Powwow is the largest celebration of Native American culture and one can find something for everyone during this event, including delicious food, exciting dance contests and arts and crafts displays.

18th Annual Sycuan Pow-wow
     EL CAJON — Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Indians will be hosting its Traditional Gathering and 18th Annual Pow-Wow on Sept. 7-9.
     There will be up prizes, a Men’s Bird Dance for all ages, Women’s Bird Dance, and Hand Drum Contest, as well as Indian Arts & Crafts, Indian Food, and a Flag Ceremony will be on Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m.

8th grade trip meeting
     ALPINE — On Thursday, Sept. 13, at 6:30 pm at the Alpine Elementary School auditorium, an information/registration meeting including a slide show presentation will be held for Joan Mac Queen eighth-grade students and parents regarding next year’s Annual Educational East Coast Tour.
     This eight-day trip will take place during Spring Break, March 15 through 22, 2008. Deposits of $150 will be accepted by check or credit card after the Sept. 13 presentation to reserve a spot on the trip. Because good citizenship is important on this trip, students’ most recent JMMS Report Card will be required in order to register a student.

Coffee with Constituents
     ALPINE — On Friday, Sept. 14, Second District Supervisor Dianne Jacob is inviting members of the community to “Coffee with Constituents,” at the Bread Basket, to give an update on county issues and to “hear any ideas, problems or concerns” regarding county government.
     If you would like to hear about the direction we are heading in East County and/or would like your concern heard, put this date on your calendar and stop by at 8:30 a.m. to the Bread Basket, at 1347 Tavern Road.

Kiwanis community swap meet
     PINE VALLEY — The Mountain Empire Kiwanis Club will be hosting a community swap meet on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 7 a.m. to noon at Mountain Empire High School, 3291 Buckman Springs Road, in front of the main building.
     This is an opportunity to make money while cleaning out your barns and storage areas. Single vender spaces are $20 each, with set-up beginning at 6 a.m. Food will be available from 8 a.m. to noon.

Campo gears up to go Hog Wild
     CAMPO — Campo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2080 is gearing up for is annual Hog Wild festivities scheduled for Oct. 13. Watch for coming announcements.
     There will be live music by Blue Dawg, food, drinks, raffles, a bake sale, and much more. In the meantime don’t forget their first Friday Rib dinners, and third Saturday Steak Fry — profits always for a worthy cause.

Alpine Amigos looking for members
     ALPINE — Are you between the ages of 5 and 19? Would you love to learn more about farm animals and crafts? Come see what 4-H is all about.
     General Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month at the Alpine Community Center.

Kiwanis raises money with recycling
     ALPINE — The Kiwanis Club of Alpine is helping the Ronald McDonald House of San Diego to raise money through a recycling program. There are two methods which the club is employing; collecting pull-tabs from aluminum cans, and collecting Hotels and Motels bar soap and shampoo/conditioners.
     The money is used to help occupants of the House who have sons and daughters in the The Rady Children’s Hospital that are suffering from cancer and other diseases. The soap and shampoo are also distributed to the occupants to help them with their daily needs.
     The Kiwanis Club of Alpine has so far collected 75 pounds of the pull-tabs.

Local blood drives
     The San Diego bloodmobile will be accepting blood donations at various spots in the coming weeks.
     An open to the public blood drive hosted by Wal-Mart, 13487 Camino Canada, El Cajon, on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The bloodmobile will be parked in the parking lot.
     Another open to the public blood drive hosted by Granite Hills High School, 1719 E Madison Ave., El Cajon, Wednesday, September 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The blood drive will be held in the gym.
     Another open to the public blood drive hosted by Viejas Casino, 5000 Willows Road, Alpine, Thursday, Sept. 13, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The blood drive will be held at DreamCatcher at Viejas.
     Anyone who is at least 17 years old, in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds may be eligible to give blood. A good meal is recommended prior to donation.

Alpine youth theater needs actors
     ALPINE — Alpine Youth Theater needs actors for 16 parts for the three-act, comedy/farce Boarding House Reach. Actors between the ages of 12-18 are needed for the production.
     Auditions begin on Sunday, Sept. 9, between 4-6 p.m. at Christ Our Savior Anglican Church.
     For more information please call 579-1902 ahead of time. The comedy will be performed for the general public in January 2008 at the Alpine Women’s Club. Everyone is welcome to audition.

The great train robbery in Campo
     CAMPO — Come out and enjoy a little of the Wild West as it used to be. The Great Train Robbery and Dinner Theater: “Death rides the Stage” featuring the Back Country Players will be at the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo on Oct. 13. The train departs promptly at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
     Be prepared to guard your belongings and loved ones as you face “The Hole in the Wall Gang.” A sit down dinner will be served at the Railroad Museum following the Train ride.
     Tickets are $50 each and group tables for ten are available for $500. There will be a no-host bar for adults only. All proceeds benefit the Campo/Lake Morena Community. For more information please contact Randy Lenac at 478-5403.

Seniors can take advantage of food distribution
     BACK COUNTRY — Seniors living in the Back Country who are 60 years of age of older can take advantage of a free food service program, which delivers 40-pound boxes of food to local specific points in the area.
     Residents are currently trying to get the word out and collect information about senior in the area who would like to receive a food box. The current pick-up point in the Campo/Lake Morena area is at Lake Morena Village.
