Relay for Life steps off this weekend
     ALPINE — Cancers survivors and supporters will be spending 24 hours walking the track at Joan Mac Queen Middle School this weekend for the annual Alpine Relay for Life. The walk begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday Aug. 11, with opening ceremonies.
     There will be entertainment, DJ’s, food, Karaoke, Hawaiian dancing, volleyball, a kid’s zone, raffles and auctions, guitar sing-a-longs, music, games, exercise classes, dancing and lots of fun and fellowship to keep participants going through the night.
     A Survivor Lap will begin at 5 p.m., and the special Luminaria Ceremony (candle lighting ceremony) is at 9 p.m.

Kiwanis needs a few good people
     ALPINE — The Alpine Kiwanis is looking for a few good people from town who are interested in the community, and enjoy working with children, and who would be interested in getting involved with the local Kiwanis.
     For more information, talk to a Kiwanian, or attend the group’s Alpine Kiwanis Club breakfast, at 7 a.m. on Aug. 11, at Alpine Elementary School.

Alpine artists needed
     ALPINE — Three events featuring local artists are coming up. Artists, musicians and poets needed for three events.
     Painting Contest: Want to see your art as you drive down the boulevard? If the answer is yes, call us. Art event at Barnes and Noble, end of August: To demonstrate and show. Performers and sellers needed for large multi-performance event in October.

Alpine Aglow is back
     ALPINE — AGLOW IS BACK! This international organization celebrating its 40th anniversary has returned to our beautiful mountain community. Speakers from all over the world come to touch the hearts of the people.
     This month, renowned author speaker and singer, Meri Crouley will be our guest. She is currently hosting NOW IS THE TIME, an international television program. Come and hear what God has put on her heart to share with us.
     Please join us on the third Friday of every month. Beginning Aug.17 at 6:30 p.m., at 1929 Arnold Way, Alpine, (the corner of Tavern Road and Arnold Way). This program is open to adult men and women.

Living History Day at Mt. Laguna
     MT. LAGUNA — The Laguna Mountain Visitors Center is sponsoring a Living History Day at the Red-tailed Roost Volunteer headquarters, past the 22.5 mile marker on Sunrise Highway, during Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 1 and 2.
     The event will feature continuous historical presentations starting on Saturday at 9:30 a.m., and Sunday at 10 a.m. Free Admission, donations are accepted.

18th Annual Pow-wow coming up
     EL CAJON — Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Indians will be hosting its Traditional Gathering and 18th Annual Pow-Wow on Sept. 7-9.
     There will be up prizes, a Men’s Bird Dance for all ages, Women’s Bird Dance, and Hand Drum Contest, as well as Indian Arts & Crafts, Indian Food, and a Flag Ceremony will be on Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m.

Campo gears up to go Hog Wild
     CAMPO — Campo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2080 is gearing up for is annual Hog Wild festivities scheduled for Oct. 13. Watch for coming announcements.
     There will be live music by Blue Dawg, food, drinks, raffles, a bake sale, and much more. In the meantime don’t forget their first Friday Rib dinners, and third Saturday Steak Fry — profits always for a worthy cause.

Seniors can take advantage of food distribution
     BACK COUNTRY — Seniors living in the Back Country who are 60 years of age of older can take advantage of a free food service program, which delivers 40-pound boxes of food to local specific points in the area.
     Residents are currently trying to get the word out and collect information about senior in the area who would like to receive a food box. The current pick-up point in the Campo/Lake Morena area is at Lake Morena Village.

Support group for Alpine cancer patients and caregivers
     ALPINE — This year nearly 12,000 San Diego County residents will be diagnosed with some type of cancer. In order to address their special needs and concerns, the American Cancer Society has established a support group for patients, survivors, caregivers and family members who live in Alpine and nearby communities.
     Meetings will continue throughout the year on the third Wednesday of each month. A licensed marriage/family therapist will facilitate the support group and guest speakers are being scheduled for upcoming sessions.
     Anyone who has been affected by cancer, either as a patient or a family member, is invited to this group at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 15, at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd. For reservations, please call the American Cancer Society, 682-7415 or e-mail kay.clark@cancer.org.

Descanso library summer activities
     DESCANSO — Come and join the Descanso Library for a lot of fun summer activities that have been scheduled.
     Shrinky Dink Teen Craft is scheduled for Aug. 16 at 6 p.m.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary fundraiser
     ALPINE — The Alpine Bert Fuller VFW Post 9578 Ladies Auxiliary will present their annual fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 18 at the post, 844 Tavern Road in Alpine.
     The evening will feature a Hawaiian menu meal, music by “Good Mojo,” and lots of fun beginning at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door, or $8 at the canteen pre-sale. It is open to the public.

Movies in the park
     ALPINE —Bring the family to Viejas Outlet Center Park for a fun-filled summer evening. Every Tuesday through Aug. 28, enjoy free movies on the grass from 7 – 9 p.m. Come early for each show and don’t forget your blanket!
     The movie schedule is as follows: Aug. 14: Madagascar, Aug. 21, Charlotte’s Web, and Aug. 28: Shrek.

A day at the races with Kiwanis
     CAMPO — The Mountain Empire/Campo Kiwanis is hosting a Day at the Races in Del Mar, on Wednesday, Aug. 22.
     Participants will ride by air-conditioned private bus to Del Mar for the day. The bus leaves 1880 Lake Morena Dr. (Flying A) at 11:15 a.m. sharp, and will return at approximately 7 p.m. that evening.
     Tickets are $25 per person, which includes the bus ride, entrance to the track, a reserved seat and a race program.

Artist association hosting demos
     ALPINE — Members of the Alpine Artists Association will be speaking at Barnes and Noble, in Grossmont Center, and participating artists will be holding demonstrations of their fine art work. The artists group will be at the bookstore on Aug. 25 and 26, each day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
     Books relating to the speakers and presenters subjects will be highlighted and a portion of sales will be donated by Barnes and Noble to the Alpine Artists Association. Please mention to the cashier that your purchases are in support of the artists, and the Alpine Artists Association. The great train robbery in Campo
     CAMPO — Come out and enjoy a little of the Wild West as it used to be. The Great Train Robbery and Dinner Theater: “Death rides the Stage” featuring the Back Country Players will be at the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo on Oct. 13. The train departs promptly at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
     Be prepared to guard your belongings and loved ones as you face “The Hole in the Wall Gang.” A sit down dinner will be served at the Railroad Museum following the Train ride.
     Tickets are $50 each and group tables for ten are available for $500. There will be a no-host bar for adults only. All proceeds benefit the Campo/Lake Morena Community. For more information please contact Randy Lenac at 478-5403.
