Music Man is coming to town
     ALPINE — Tickets go on sale this Saturday morning, Feb. 3, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Alpine Women’s Club for this year’s Alpine School District Musical. Always an extremely popular event, for the past three years all of the tickets have been sold out. Due to the popularity, there will be a limit of 25 tickets per purchaser.
     The play dates this year are March 15, 16, 17, 22,23, and 24, with a possible out of town Julian Performance on the 25 (to be announced). The two Saturday nights are dinner shows with Fried Chicken and Biscuits and Apple Cider.
     Ticket prices for the show are: Thursdays and Fridays Front Row $20, Row 2, 3 $15; Rows 4, 5, 6 $10; Rows 7 to 10 $5. Saturdays Front Row $30, Row 2, 3 $25; Rows 4, 5, 6 $20; Rows 7 to 10 $15.
     This is the 30th year of the Alpine School District Musical. It is directed by Susan Lancaster-McGourty, Sandi Bennett, Nicole LaBella, and Tim Arends with musical accompaniment by Joan Waterworth.


CHIRP meeting will be buzzing
     ALPINE — CHIRP Garden Club will hear all about bees — Africanized, honey and orchard bees — at its upcoming meeting, to be held Monday, Feb. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at Alpine Community Church’s Fuller Hall, 2225 Victoria Drive.
     Pete Holtzen, beekeeper and owner of “Honeybee Rescue” will present the program, which will focus on both attracting and eradicating the winged creatures. Holtzen, who refers to himself as a hobby beekeeper, has spent the past 10 years removing unwanted bee swarms and relocating them to friends and associates who desire bees for pollination benefits. His hand-outs will include a list of both native and garden plants which attract bees, said Hilde Hinchcliff, CHIRP program chairman.
     The public is invited to attend the meeting, and there is no charge. CHIRP is a not-for-profit habitat education organization based in Alpine. For additional information, please contact CHIRP Habitat Hut at 445-7675.


CYT presents Anne of Green Gables
     EL CAJON — Christian Youth Theater (CYT) students will present Anne of Green Gables, the children’s classic written by Lucy Montgomery, at the East County Performing Arts Center, Feb. 9 to 18.
     Performance dates for Anne of Green Gables are Feb 9, 10, 16 and 17 at 6:30 p.m. and Feb 11, 17 and 18 at 1:30 p.m. at the East County Performing Arts Center, 210 E. Main Street, El Cajon. All seats are reserved and ticket prices at the door are $12 for ages 3-19 and $14 for adults.
     Tickets purchased online or through the CYT Box Office are discounted. Special discounts available for groups of ten or more. Bargain performance is Feb. 17 at 1:30 p.m. with all seats for $10. For tickets one may call 588-0206

Canyonfolk hosting house concert
     ALPINE — Canyonfolk House Concerts will be holding its next show on Saturday, Feb. 10, featuring Diana Jones making her debut West Coast appearance.
     Doors will open at 7 p.m. for dinner/dessert potluck, and the show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person.

Quickstart classes at Alpine Church Spiritual Living
     ALPINE — The Alpine Church of Spiritual Living is offering a Quickstart Class on Saturday, Feb. 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The class is an introduction in the background and basic principles of Religious Science Philosophy.
     This is a comprehensive and “fun” way to quickly learn the fundamentals and background of Science of Mind, where you change your thinking — change your life. Cost for the class is $25 and includes a workbook. Pre-registration is required.

ACC hosts Valentine country style
     ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center will host a Valentine’s dance night on Saturday, Feb. 10 from 6 to 10 p.m. at 1830 Alpine Blvd.
     The event will feature dance instruction by Luis Sumaya, including line dance, country two-step and free style.
     The cost is $10 per person, $8 for seniors or ACC members. For more information one may call 445-7330.

Tea-time at Alpine Woman’s Club
     ALPINE — The Fourteenth Annual Victorian Tea will be held at the Alpine Woman’s Club on Saturday, Feb. 24.
     First seating is at noon and the second seating is at 3 p.m. The club is located at 2156 Alpine Blvd in the historic Town Hall. There will be a silent auction and several raffle items. This event is open to the public and Victorian dress is optional. Cost is $25 per person and proceeds will go towards their scholarship fund. Space is limited so please order your tickets early.

ACC hosts Valentine’s dinner and dance
     ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center will host Valentine’s Dinner and Dance on Saturday, Feb. 3 at the center, 1830, Alpine Blvd.
     The evening will run from 6 to 10 p.m. and will include a chicken or beef diner, a no host bar, silent auction and 50/50 drawing, as well as music provided by The Ideals.
     Tickets are $30 per person and reservations are mandatory. Tickets must be purchased in advance at the community center. Or more information one may call 445-7330.

Seniors can take advantage of food distribution
     BACK COUNTRY - Seniors living in the Back Country who are 60 years of age of older can take advantage of a free food service program, which delivers 40-pound boxes of food to local specific points in the area.
     Residents are currently trying to get the word out and collect information about senior in the area who would like to receive a food box. The current pick-up point in the Campo/Lake Morena area is at Lake Morena Village.

Year-round cruises
     SAN DIEGO — Carnival Cruises will launch a year-round cruise schedule with four and five day voyages to Mexico. The 2,052 passenger fun ship, Elation will depart on Thursdays for four-day cruises and Mondays and Saturdays for five day cruises. The Elation will also operate six day Mexico cruises and a 15 day Panama Canal Cruise.
     Featured ports include Cabo San Lucas, La Paz and Ensenada.

New classes at Fantastic Ceramics
     ALPINE — Alpine’s Fantastic Ceramics is holding a new class by Alpine Artisans. The classes will give kids and adults a chance to create items for themselves and/or presents to give to others.
     Classes include everything from hair to home accessories featuring beading techniques, working with clay and much more. Adults and children will learn new skills as well as artistic and scientific concepts and lessons such as “Reduce Reuse and Recycle.” You can sign up for one of their scheduled classes or, with a minimum of five people, host your own class from their menu at their location or yours.
     The first classes for children are Bead Mine on Wednesday, Feb. 7 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Hearts Galore on Thursday, Feb. 8 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The introductory fee of $15 covers the class and materials. Beading Basics for adults is on Saturday, Feb. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m., the fee is $15, materials are available for purchase at the class or you can bring your own.

ALFA has new store hours
     ALPINE — The Alpine Library Friends Association Book Store has new operating hours.
     It will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Mondays. The store is located in The Alpine Creek Town Center, 1347 Tavern Rd. Suite #14.
     If you have not visited the bookstore yet you are missing out on the best selections of books in the East County. There is a large variety of books to choose from at reasonable rates. Many books are sold for a fraction of their original price. Everyday there are new books to choose from on the New Arrival’s table. Wednesday is Half Price Day and patrons need to stop in to see what is half price that day. You can also purchase gift certificates.
     All proceeds go towards supporting the Alpine Library with new books and magazines, equipment, crafts for Story Time programs and continuing to increase ALFA’s capital fundraising account for a new Alpine Library.


Free guitar lessons for teens

     ALPINE — A free guitar class is being offered to local teens on Wednesday evenings at 3:30, 4:15, and 5 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd. There are three classes available: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Middle and High School students are invited participate in these free lessons.
     Students need to bring their own guitar; electric and acoustic guitars can be used for the class. The instructor is Fr. Keith Acker, pastor of our local Alpine Anglican Church. He has taught guitar for more than 20 years and taught the free classes to teenagers in Alpine the last five years.

Local 4-H looking for more Amigos
     ALPINE — The Alpine Amigos 4-H is looking for interested youth between the ages of five and 19 to join the club.
     Would you love to learn more about farm animals and crafts? Come see what 4-H is all about. General Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month, 7 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center.

Support group formed for Alpine cancer patients, caregivers
     ALPINE — This year nearly 12,000 San Diego County residents will be diagnosed with some type of cancer. In order to address their special needs and concerns, the American Cancer Society has established a support group for patients, survivors, caregivers and family members who live in Alpine and nearby communities. Meetings will continue throughout the year on the third Wednesday of each month. A licensed marriage/family therapist will facilitate the support group and guest speakers are being scheduled for upcoming sessions.
     Anyone who has been affected by cancer, either as a patient or a family member, is invited to this group at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Boulevard. For reservations, please call the American Cancer Society, 682-7415 or e-mail kay.clark@cancer.org.

AFPD offering five scholarships to local students
     ALPINE - The Alpine Fire Protection District invites local high school seniors to compete for one of five $1,000 regional scholarships to be awarded by the San Diego Chapter of the California Special Districts Association (CSDA).
     The purpose of the scholarship program is to increase knowledge and awareness of special districts and their role in local government. Students who compete for a scholarship will complete an essay that demonstrates their knowledge about the purpose of special districts. Applicants must also provide a personal statement related to their background or goals. Additional selection criteria include community involvement or volunteer service, letters of recommendation, and grade point average (2.5 minimum).
     Students may print out an application on the AFPD web site www.alpinefire.org or contact Chief Jobes at 445-2635. Applications must be received at the District's office by 5 p.m. Friday, March 9. Eligible students must live within the district's service area.

CTN looking for local content
     SAN DIEGO — The County is accepting applications for grants that encourage non-profit and educational institutions to produce quality and timely half-hour video productions. Five $10,000 grants will be awarded through the Local Government Programming Video Grant Program, and finished videos will be aired on CTN, Cox channel 19, and Time Warner Channel 22.

Alpine Mountaineers 2007 sign-ups
     ALPINE — Alpine Mountaineer Pop Warner Football league will be holding sign-ups beginning in February.
     The Alpine Mountaineers are a Pop Warner Football League with Six teams and Cheer Squads, ranging in age from 5 to 15. Cheer Squads will be matched with an age appropriate football team.
     Sign-ups are scheduled for Feb. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Alpine Elementary, March 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Alpine Elementary and finally on March 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Shadow Hills Elementary.
     Players must have two copies of their birth certificates and a 1-by-1 inch head shot photo. At the end of school year, a copy of the year’s report card will be required.
     Last year, local Cheer Squads took third place in regional finals, appeared on the field at a Charger game and participated in the half time show at the Poinsettia Bowl. Registration is $225 and includes coaching, competition registration fees and Cheer Uniform.
