EL CAJON — At a Grossmont Union High
School District board meeting held Feb. 8, trustees voted to
create a Bond Advisory Commission that will study four crucial
feasibility issues for a high school to be built in Alpine.
After the GUHSD board workshop that took place on Feb.
3, many Alpine community members were feeling the effects of
deflation due to what appeared to be a new lack of interested on
GUHSD’s part to actually make good on bond promises, and build
the 12th high school. However, many Alpine people stepped up at
that workshop, and let the board know that they were not only
waiting on the board to keep the promises they made before the
elections, they were very aware of what those promises were and
how the district was to deliver.
Further support from Alpine came at the Feb. 8 board
meeting when Larry Urdahl presented to the board a plea to
create a commission that would oversee the Proposition H Bond
monies. More than 50 Alpine citizens showed up at this meeting,
letting the GUHSD board members know that Alpine is serious
about its desire and need for a high school in the community.
The newly formed Bond Advisory Commission (BAC) will be
chaired by Mark Price, who is excited about this glimmer of hope
for an Alpine high school. Price hopes the commission will be
able to provide answers in four specific areas before June of
this year, where the commission will present its findings to the
GUHSD board on the first board meeting of that month.
The commission has four important subcommittees: 1)
Curriculum and Facilities for the Alpine High School, 2) Finance
Subcommittee, 3) Site Subcommittee and 4) Repair and Renovation
Subcommittee.
This commission is to study Alpine high school’s
feasibility in addition to the renovation and repair of the
existing Grossmont high schools.
Alpine citizens are asked to step up and sign-up to
serve on one of these committees that will be meeting twice a
month through May, to assure a fair and honest evaluation
process for Alpine. As Chairman, Mark Price along with his Vice
Chair will be responsible for developing Subcommittee
recommendations to present to the full BAC.
The Curriculum and Facilities Subcommittee will
determine the type, and size of school as well as the curriculum
the Alpine high school would offer. This important subcommittee
will define what a full and comprehensive high school means for
Alpine.
The Finance Subcommittee will be investigating all
possible funding options for the 12th high school as well as the
remaining repair and renovations as outlined in the Bond.
The Site Subcommittee will look at the four sites that
are now before the board, as well as any other possible sites.
Also, this subcommittee will be tasked with defining and
feasibility of joint use opportunities that could come with the
Alpine high school; this includes community ball fields,
swimming pool, library and performance center.
The Repair and Renovation Subcommittee will work with
the long list of needed repairs and renovations that are listed
in the Bond. It is the duty of this subcommittee to prioritize
the remaining items that need repair, while working with the
Finance Subcommittee and GUHSD staff.
This Finance Subcommittee will determine the individual
costs of each repair and renovation on the “have to do” list,
the “should do” list and the “want to do list” that are
presently listed on the GUHSD Facilities Master Plan.
These committees will be appointed on Tuesday, Feb. 20,
at 7 p.m. at Alpine Elementary School, 1850 Alpine Blvd. If you
are one of the many Alpine residents want to see an Alpine high
school and are interested in any of these committees please make
a choice about which committee you wish to serve on and plan to
attend the Feb. 20 meeting.
