Alpine Girls Softball Association tryouts
     ALPINE — The Alpine Girls Softball Association tryouts and final registration will continue on Saturday, Jan. 20 at Joan Mac Queen Middle School.
     Tryouts will begin at 7:30 a.m. with the all-age open division, 8U at 8:30 a.m., 10U at 10:30 a.m., 12U at 12 p.m., and 14U at 1:30 p.m. If this date is rained out tryouts will be held for all ages on Jan. 20 from 9 — 10:30 a.m. Girls must wear cleats and bring glove.
     The league is still looking for volunteers to fill positions as coaches for some teams. For more information check online at eteamz.active.com/alpineasa/, or call 277-0501.

Alpine Kiwanis Youth Olympics coming up
     ALPINE — The Kiwanis Club of Alpine will hold its annual Youth Olympics on Saturday, Jan. 20, at Alpine Elementary School. The day begins with registration at 8:30 a.m. Participating children will receive their bid numbers and Olympian pin. Opening ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m., followed by competition, which will run until 10:30 a.m. From 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. the participants and families will be entertained by Magician Kenny Shelton as the results of the events are being tallied. Medal presentations will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
     Competition will be by age group divisions: Ages 4, 5 and 6; ages 7 and 8; ages 9 and 10; and ages 11, 12 and 13. Boy and girls will compete separately.


Holt holding travel blowout show
     ALPINE - Holt Travel and Tours will be holding a travel blowout show on Saturday, Jan. 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2241 W. Victoria Dr.
     There will be a free drawing for gift baskets and door prizes as well as special offers on travel. Marc Bailey of Fox News will be broadcasting live with Lite 107.9 FM from 12 to 2 p.m.

Historical society holding bi-monthly luncheon
     ALPINE - The Alpine Historical Society will hold its bi-monthly potluck luncheon on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Alpine Woman's Club, 2156 Alpine Blvd. Members, their guests and others interested in the history of Alpine are invited to attend.
     Leland Fetzer, a retired SDSU professor and author of several books on local history, will be speaking about his book "A Good Camp - Goldmines of Julian and the Cuyamacas." Everyone is welcome.

CCT theatre announces auditions for Senior Follies
     EL CAJON - CCT Musical Theater and Art Beat Management are looking for talented people to star in their production of SENIOR FOLLIES, a musical review that will transport audiences back to the best music and dance of the twentieth century.
     Performers 55 years or older, who love to sing, dance, tell jokes or just entertain in general are invited to come and audition on Jan. 25, 26 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Jan. 27 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., at the East County Performing Art Center.
     Show dates are June 21 through 24. For more information call 997-5332. Auditions will be held at the CCT offices and rehearsal hall at 1545 Pioneer Way, El Cajon.
     Singers, be prepared to sing a one minute song selection, dancers, come prepared to move, others, be prepared with a one minute audition to show us your talent.

Campo family nights
     CAMPO - The Mountain Empire Collaborative is sponsoring Campo Family Night at the Mountain Empire Community Center from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees will have a chance to meet their neighbors, have dinner, see a movie, play games, crafts and much more. They will be on Fridays, Jan. 26, Feb. 23, March 30, April 27 and June 1.

Pony league tryouts
     ALPINE - The Alpine/Viejas Pony Baseball season tryouts will take place at the Pony Field behind Shadow Hills on Jan. 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Feb. 3 from 10 a.m. to noon. Late registration at try-outs will cost $195.
     There are open positions within the league for team managers, coaches and the Pony Board. The league is also looking for sponsors and a donation of a container to store equipment.

Tea-time at Alpine Woman’s Club
     ALPINE — The Fourteenth Annual Victorian Tea will be held at the Alpine Woman’s Club on Saturday, Feb. 24.
     First seating is at noon and the second seating is at 3 p.m. The club is located at 2156 Alpine Blvd in the historic Town Hall. There will be a silent auction and several raffle items. This event is open to the public and Victorian dress is optional. Cost is $25 per person and proceeds will go towards their scholarship fund. Space is limited so please order your tickets early.

Historic buildings open house
     ALPINE - The Alpine Town Hall and the Alpine Historical Society's two historic buildings will be open to the public on Saturday, Jan. 27 and Sunday, Jan. 28 from 2 to 4 p.m.
     This is a great opportunity to go back in time and learn more about Historic Alpine from several knowledgeable docents. The Town Hall, owned and operated by the Alpine Woman's Club, was built in 1899 and is located at 2156 Alpine Blvd. The Dr. Sophronia Nichol's House was built in 1896 and the Capt Adam Beaty house was built in 1899. They are both located at 2116 Tavern Road. Just follow the signs to the Museum.

Seniors can take advantage of food distribution
     BACK COUNTRY - Seniors living in the Back Country who are 60 years of age of older can take advantage of a free food service program, which delivers 40-pound boxes of food to local specific points in the area.
     Residents are currently trying to get the word out and collect information about senior in the area who would like to receive a food box. The current pick-up point in the Campo/Lake Morena area is at Lake Morena Village.

     ALPINE  — The Alpine Writer’s Guild is in the process of organizing a writing group for teens. If you are a local teenager and have an interest in writing, please contact Lillian Fisher at 445-5537.
 

ALFA has new store hours
     ALPINE — The Alpine Library Friends Association Book Store has new operating hours.
     It will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Mondays. The store is located in The Alpine Creek Town Center, 1347 Tavern Rd. Suite #14.
     If you have not visited the bookstore yet you are missing out on the best selections of books in the East County. There is a large variety of books to choose from at reasonable rates. Many books are sold for a fraction of their original price. Everyday there are new books to choose from on the New Arrival’s table. Wednesday is Half Price Day and patrons need to stop in to see what is half price that day. You can also purchase gift certificates.
     All proceeds go towards supporting the Alpine Library with new books and magazines, equipment, crafts for Story Time programs and continuing to increase ALFA’s capital fundraising account for a new Alpine Library.


Free guitar lessons for teens

     ALPINE — A free guitar class is being offered to local teens on Wednesday evenings at 3:30, 4:15, and 5 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd. There are three classes available: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Middle and High School students are invited participate in these free lessons.
     Students need to bring their own guitar; electric and acoustic guitars can be used for the class. The instructor is Fr. Keith Acker, pastor of our local Alpine Anglican Church. He has taught guitar for more than 20 years and taught the free classes to teenagers in Alpine the last five years.

Support group formed for Alpine cancer patients, caregivers
     ALPINE - This year nearly 12,000 San Diego County residents will be diagnosed with some type of cancer. In order to address their special needs and concerns, the American Cancer Society has established a support group for patients, survivors, caregivers and family members who live in Alpine and nearby communities.
     Meetings will continue throughout the year on the third Wednesday of each month. A licensed marriage/family therapist will facilitate the support group and guest speakers are being scheduled for upcoming sessions.
     Anyone who has been affected by cancer, either as a patient or a family member, is invited to this group at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 17, at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd. For reservations, please call the American Cancer Society at 682-7415 or e-mail kay.clark@cancer.org.

Canyonfolk season begins
     HARBISON CANYON - The local, house concert Canyonfolk venue will open for its 2007 season on Saturday, Jan. 20, with musician Joel Rafael.
     The doors will open at 7 p.m. for the dinner/dessert potluck with coffee, tea, water, beer, and wine. Cost is $15 per ticket. This will be an inside show so chairs will be provided.

Local 4-H looking for more Amigos
     ALPINE — The Alpine Amigos 4-H is looking for interested youth between the ages of five and 19 to join the club.
     Would you love to learn more about farm animals and crafts? Come see what 4-H is all about. General Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month, 7 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center.

Year-round cruises
     SAN DIEGO — Carnival Cruises will launch a year-round cruise schedule with four and five day voyages to Mexico. The 2,052 passenger fun ship, Elation will depart on Thursdays for four-day cruises and Mondays and Saturdays for five day cruises. The Elation will also operate six day Mexico cruises and a 15 day Panama Canal Cruise.
     Featured ports include Cabo San Lucas, La Paz and Ensenada.

AFPD offering five scholarships to local students
     ALPINE - The Alpine Fire Protection District invites local high school seniors to compete for one of five $1,000 regional scholarships to be awarded by the San Diego Chapter of the California Special Districts Association (CSDA).
     The purpose of the scholarship program is to increase knowledge and awareness of special districts and their role in local government. Students who compete for a scholarship will complete an essay that demonstrates their knowledge about the purpose of special districts. Applicants must also provide a personal statement related to their background or goals. Additional selection criteria include community involvement or volunteer service, letters of recommendation, and grade point average (2.5 minimum).
     Students may print out an application on the AFPD web site www.alpinefire.org or contact Chief Jobes at 445-2635. Applications must be received at the District's office by 5 p.m. Friday, March 9. Eligible students must live within the district's service area.

CTN looking for local content
     SAN DIEGO — The County is accepting applications for grants that encourage non-profit and educational institutions to produce quality and timely half-hour video productions. Five $10,000 grants will be awarded through the Local Government Programming Video Grant Program, and finished videos will be aired on CTN, Cox channel 19, and Time Warner Channel 22.

Alpine Mountaineers 2007 sign-ups
     ALPINE — Alpine Mountaineer Pop Warner Football league will be holding sign-ups beginning in February.
     The Alpine Mountaineers are a Pop Warner Football League with Six teams and Cheer Squads, ranging in age from 5 to 15. Cheer Squads will be matched with an age appropriate football team.
     Sign-ups are scheduled for Feb. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Alpine Elementary, March 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Alpine Elementary and finally on March 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Shadow Hills Elementary.
     Players must have two copies of their birth certificates and a 1-by-1 inch head shot photo. At the end of school year, a copy of the year’s report card will be required.
     Last year, local Cheer Squads took third place in regional finals, appeared on the field at a Charger game and participated in the half time show at the Poinsettia Bowl. Registration is $225 and includes coaching, competition registration fees and Cheer Uniform.
