Chaparral reunion
     ALPINE — To all you Chaparral Dust Devils that graduated in 1983 from Chaparral, before it became Joan Mac Queen Middle School, it’s time for a 25 year, 8th Grade Reunion.
     Eric Hartell is organizing, and trying to contact every student from the graduating class to attend a class reunion on July 28, at the Palo Verde Lake Club House. This will be a catered event for the class of 1981-82.

     ALPINE — The Alpine Chamber of Commerce is presenting a Jamboree for Alpine Businesses. This is your opportunity to showcase your business, and participate in progressive networking, on Monday, July 23.
     The event will be a business-hop around town, with various activities at each location.

Alpine artists needed
     ALPINE — Three events featuring local artists are coming up. Artists, musicians and poets needed for three events.
     Painting Contest: Want to see your art as you drive down the boulevard? If the answer is yes, call us. Art event at Barnes and Noble, end of August: To demonstrate and show. Performers and sellers needed for large multi-performance event in October.

Support group for cancer patients, caregivers

     ALPINE — This year nearly 12,000 San Diego County residents will be diagnosed with cancer. In order to address their special needs and concerns, the American Cancer Society has established a support group for patients, survivors, caregivers and family members who live in Alpine and nearby communities. Meetings will continue throughout the year on the third Wednesday of each month.
     Anyone who has been affected by cancer, either as a patient or a family member, is invited to this group at 6:30 p.m., on the third Wednesday of the month, at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd.. MECAC summer youth program
     PINE VALLEY — The Mountain Empire Creative Arts Council presents “A Taste of Art” this summer in Pine Valley and Campo/Lake Morena.
     The summer youth program is for children K – 8th grades and will be held on Tuesdays, July 17, 24, 31, from 1 – 3:30 p.m.
     Classes will be held concurrently at the Pine Valley Clubhouse and the Lake Morena Campground Pavilion. The program will offer classes in Creative Writing, Music, Visual Arts, and Woodworking and will cost $3 per class or $10 for all 4 classes. Limited scholarships will be available.

Third Annual Alpine Art Festival
     ALPINE — The Southern California Center for Youth, Nature and the Arts will host the third annual Alpine Artist Festival on Saturday, July 28, at 9 a.m. at the Alpine Community Center.
     The event will feature artists’ booths, local dance groups, a community talent show, a comedy magician, a giant slide, pony rides and a petting zoo, and other surprises.

Historic Highway 80 fundraiser
    
EL CAJON — “T-Birds, Tail Fins & Car Hops,” this is both the title and the theme for the big party from 6 to 9 p.m. on July 12, at The San Diego Collection, 7215 El Cajon Blvd. The event is a fundraiser for the Historic Highway 80 so the site for the party is a perfect choice. It’s a museum and resort featuring antique cars, many from the era of the 50s, the same time period when old 80 was still in use.
     The party features an Italian dinner with wine and three auctions with Dave Scott from KUSI as the auctioneer and emcee. There will also be light entertainment, music from the 50’s and opportunities to stroll through the museum and admire the ancient cars on display.
     Tickets for the evening are $25. Proceeds will go to the Historic Highway 80 Corporation, which uses the money to help promote interest in the route and the towns along it.

Kiwanis needs a few good people
     ALPINE — The Alpine Kiwanis is looking for a few good people from town who are interested in the community, and enjoy working with children.
     For more information, talk to a Kiwanian, or attend the group’s Alpine Kiwanis Club breakfast, at 7 a.m. on July 28, at Alpine Elementary School.

Movies in the park
     ALPINE —Bring the family to Viejas Outlet Center Park for a fun-filled summer evening. Every Tuesday from July 17 through Aug. 28, enjoy free movies on the grass from 7 – 9 p.m. Come early for each show and don’t forget your blanket!
     The movie schedule is as follows: July 24: Racing Stripes, July 31: Happy Feet, Aug. 7: Bring it On!, Aug. 14: Madagascar, Aug. 21, Charlotte’s Web, and Aug. 28: Shrek.


Tony Robbins is coming to town
     ALPINE — The Anthony Robbins Company is unleashing the Power Within at a workshop scheduled for July 16, at the Alpine Community Center at 11:30 a.m. This workshop, presented by Tamara Bunte, a Peak Performance Strategist and National Speaker, will be providing strategies on communication skills and physiology used by the world’s top achievers to attain success and fulfillment.

CDF conducting fire abatement inspections
     ALPINE — The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection engine crews will be randomly inspecting structures in their jurisdiction for violation of state and local fire laws.
     In rural areas the law requires that brush be cleared at least 100 feet around all structures. Proper clearing around homes and buildings would save most of the homes lost in wildfires.


Seniors can take advantage of food distribution
     BACK COUNTRY — Seniors living in the Back Country who are 60 years of age of older can take advantage of a free food service program, which delivers 40-pound boxes of food to local specific points in the area.
     Residents are currently trying to get the word out and collect information about senior in the area who would like to receive a food box. The current pick-up point in the Campo/Lake Morena area is at Lake Morena Village.

Summer tennis classes at ACC
     ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center (ACC) will be holding summer tennis classes, ending July 31.
     Classes for all age groups and player abilities will be taught by certified teaching professional, Rene Toscano. Special classes will be offered to teen athletes interested in competing in high school interscholastic tennis teams.

Descanso library summer activities
     DESCANSO — Come and join the Descanso Library for a lot of fun summer activities that have been scheduled.
The Summer Reading Program is about to start.
     The summer reading finale is scheduled for July 26, at 6 p.m. Henna Tattoos will be presented by Natasha Papausek on Aug. 4, at 11 a.m. and a Shrinky Dink Teen Craft is scheduled for Aug. 16 at 6 p.m.

Blues concert at Viejas
     ALPINE — Local musicians Chet and The Committee, will be playing Live Blues, Swing, Boogie, and Rock, at a concert on Sunday, July 15, at Viejas Center Concerts in the Park, from 4 to 7 p.m.
     No cover, all ages welcome. Bring a picnic with a blanket and a friend and enjoy the music.

Concerts in the Park series
     ALPINE — Come and join us for our Summer Concerts in the Park, held at the Alpine Park. Food will be prepared and sold by members of Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus and Queen of Angels, unless otherwise noted.
     The concerts and available menus are as follows: On July 15: The Pine Creek Posse will be playing Western, Rockabilly, and Light Rock. Hot dogs, Hamburgers and Chips will be available by Lift High The Cross Church.
     On July 22: The 145th Street Deluxe Blues Band, Lasagna, meatball, Salad and Rolls will be served for $6. July 29: The Corvettes will be playing Doo Wop and Motown, BBQ Chicken Teriyaki, rice Pilaf, Salad, and Rolls will be $6.

Football fundraiser
     ALPINE — Alpine Mountaineers Pop Warner is hosting a Football Fest Fundraiser at Viejas Outlet Center, on July 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. Come and join in for some family fun, and stay for a free movie at the New Viejas Movies in the Park starting at 7 p.m.
     There will be great food, a Dunk Tank, a DJ, Face Painting, Jumper plus games to play and more!  Food and Game tickets will be sold at the event.


Avalanche Ranch
     ALPINE — Alpine Christian Fellowship will be hosting the Avalanche Ranch Vacation Bible School, from July 23 to 27, from 9 a.m. to noon.
