Calling poets, authors and journalists
     ALPINE  — The Alpine Writer’s Guild is in the process of organizing a writing group for teens. If you are a local teenager and have an interest in writing, please contact Lillian Fisher at 445-5537.

Alpine artists needed
     ALPINE — Three events featuring local artists are coming up. Artists, musicians and poets needed for three events.
     Painting Contest: Want to see your art as you drive down the boulevard? If the answer is yes, call us. Art event at Barnes and Noble, end of August: To demonstrate and show. Performers and sellers needed for large multi-performance event in October.

Descanso library summer activities
     DESCANSO — Come and join the Descanso Library for a lot of fun summer activities that have been scheduled.
     The Summer Reading Program has begun. The summer reading finale is scheduled for July 26, at 6 p.m. Henna Tattoos will be presented by Natasha Papausek on Aug. 4, at 11 a.m., and a Shrinky Dink Teen Craft is scheduled for Aug. 16 at 6 p.m.

Movies in the park
     ALPINE —Bring the family to Viejas Outlet Center Park for a fun-filled summer evening. Every Tuesday through Aug. 28, enjoy free movies on the grass from 7 – 9 p.m. Come early for each show and don’t forget your blanket!
     The movie schedule is as follows: July 31: Happy Feet, Aug. 7: Bring it On!, Aug. 14: Madagascar, Aug. 21, Charlotte’s Web, and Aug. 28: Shrek.

Kiwanis needs a few good people
ALPINE — The Alpine Kiwanis is looking for a few good people from town who are interested in the community, and enjoy working with children, and who would be interested in getting involved with the local Kiwanis.
For more information, talk to a Kiwanian, or attend the group’s Alpine Kiwanis Club breakfast, at 7 a.m. on Aug. 11, at Alpine Elementary School.

Campo gears up to go Hog Wild
CAMPO — Campo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2080 is gearing up for is annual Hog Wild festivities scheduled for Oct. 13. Watch for coming announcements.
There will be live music by Blue Dawg, food, drinks, raffles, a bake sale, and much more. In the meantime don’t forget their first Friday Rib dinners, and third Saturday Steak Fry — profits always for a worthy cause.

Support group for cancer patients, caregivers
     ALPINE — This year nearly 12,000 San Diego County residents will be diagnosed with cancer. In order to address their special needs and concerns, the American Cancer Society has established a support group for patients, survivors, caregivers and family members who live in Alpine and nearby communities. Meetings will continue throughout the year on the third Wednesday of each month.
     Anyone who has been affected by cancer, either as a patient or a family member, is invited to this group at 6:30 p.m., on the third Wednesday of the month, at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd.. For reservations, please call the American Cancer Society, 682-7415 or e-mail kay.clark@cancer.org.

Annual Pine Valley Days goes this weekend
     PINE VALLEY — The annual Pine Valley Days event will be taking place this weekend, at various different venues around town. Promising to be a big event again this year, with more than 60 entries, the annual parade will step off promptly at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 28, started by a German bi-plane flyover.
     Be sure to get there early and stake a spot along the road as the entrances to Pine Valley will begin closing to traffic at 8:15 a.m.

Seniors can take advantage of food distribution
     BACK COUNTRY — Seniors living in the Back Country who are 60 years of age of older can take advantage of a free food service program, which delivers 40-pound boxes of food to local specific points in the area.
     Residents are currently trying to get the word out and collect information about senior in the area who would like to receive a food box. The current pick-up point in the Campo/Lake Morena area is at Lake Morena Village.

Summer tennis classes at ACC
     ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center (ACC) will be holding summer tennis classes, ending July 31.
     Classes for all age groups and player abilities will be taught by certified teaching professional, Rene Toscano. Special classes will be offered to teen athletes interested in competing in high school interscholastic tennis teams.

Concerts in the Park series
     ALPINE — Come and join us for our Summer Concerts in the Park, held at the Alpine Park. Food will be prepared and sold by members of Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus and Queen of Angels, unless otherwise noted.
     The concerts and available menus are as follows: July 29: The Corvettes will be playing Doo Wop and Motown, Barbecue Chicken Teriyaki, rice Pilaf, Salad, and Rolls will be $6.

Third Annual Alpine Art Festival
ALPINE — The Southern California Center for Youth, Nature and the Arts will host the third annual Alpine Artist Festival on Saturday, July 28, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Alpine Community Center.
The event will feature artists’ booths, local dance groups, a community talent show, a comedy magician, a giant slide, and other surprises.

Chaparral reunion
ALPINE — To all you Chaparral Dust Devils that graduated in 1983 from Chaparral, before it became Joan Mac Queen Middle School, it’s time for a 25 year, 8th Grade Reunion.
Eric Hartell is organizing a class reunion on July 28, at the Palo Verde Lake Club House. This will be a catered event for the class of 1981-82.

Artists hosting demos
ALPINE — Members of the Alpine Artists Association will be speaking at Barnes and Noble, in Grossmont Center, and participating artists will be holding demonstrations of their fine art work. The artists group will be at the bookstore on Aug. 25 and 26, each day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Books relating to the speakers and presenters subjects will be highlighted and a portion of sales will be donated by Barnes and Noble to the Alpine Artists Association.
