GUHSD forum will discuss
new Superintendent
EL CAJON — The
Governing Board of the Grossmont Union High School District
will hold an open-to-the-public community forum on Monday,
June 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Bob Guess Theater at West
Hills High School to determine the specific traits, skills,
abilities and experience desired in the new district
superintendent. West Hills High School is located at 8756 Mast
Blvd., in Santee.

San Diego Blood Bank visits
The San Diego Blood Bank will be accepting blood
donations at various open to the public blood drives in the
coming weeks.
Hosted by Viejas Outlet Center, 5000 Willows Road,
Alpine, Thursday, June 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The
bloodmobile will be parked at the Welcome Home storefront at
the west end of the outlet.
Anyone who is at least 17 years old, in good health and
weighs at least 110 pounds may be eligible to give blood. A
good meal is recommended prior to donation.

Bethel Bazaar
ALPINE — Alpine’s Bethel Christian Assembly will be
holding a special vendor expo and swap meet on Saturday, June
16, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Anyone who would like to sell items at the bazaar, or
promote their business, is invited to rent a space at the
event. Booths or displays are $60 for a large spot (2 parking
spaces) and $35 for a small spot (1 parking space).
Students from the community will be using this fundraiser
to travel to the Dominican Republic. There they will be
helping people living in poverty through construction
projects, health care, and educational and social support
services.

Republican
women’s meeting
ALPINE — Alpine and Mountain Empire Republican Women,
Federated, will hold its last meeting before going dark for
July and August on Monday, June 18 in the Club House at Alpine
Mobile Home Park, at 2400 Alpine Blvd.
Refreshments will be served at 10:30 a.m. The business
meeting begins at 11:00 a.m. Mark Price will address the high
school for Alpine and other matters concerning residents of
Alpine. He will take questions afterwards.

Support group for
cancer patients, caregivers
ALPINE — This year nearly 12,000 San Diego County
residents will be diagnosed with cancer. In order to address
their special needs and concerns, the American Cancer Society
has established a support group for patients, survivors,
caregivers and family members who live in Alpine and nearby
communities. Meetings will continue throughout the year on the
third Wednesday of each month.
Anyone who has been affected by cancer, either as a
patient or a family member, is invited to this group at 6:30
p.m., Wednesday, June 20, at the Alpine Community Center, 1830

MECAC summer
youth program
PINE VALLEY — The Mountain Empire Creative Arts Council
presents “A Taste of Art” this summer in Pine Valley and
Campo/Lake Morena.
The summer youth program is for children K – 8th grades
and will be held on Tuesdays, July10, 17, 24, 31, from 1 –
3:30 p.m.
Classes will be held concurrently at the Pine Valley
Clubhouse and the Lake Morena Campground Pavilion. The program
will offer classes in Creative Writing, Music, Visual Arts,
and Woodworking and will cost $3 per class or $10 for all 4
classes. Limited scholarships will be available.

Third Annual
Alpine Art Festival
ALPINE — The Southern California Center for Youth, Nature
and the Arts will host the third annual Alpine Artist Festival
on Saturday, July 28, at 9 a.m. at the Alpine Community
Center.
The event will feature artists’ booths, local dance
groups, a community talent show, a comedy magician, a giant
slide, pony rides and a petting zoo, and other surprises.

Historical society tours
ALPINE — The Alpine Town Hall and The Alpine Historical
Society buildings will be open to the public on Saturday, June
23, and Sunday, June 24, from 2 to 4 p.m.
This is a great opportunity to go back in time and
learn more about Historic Alpine from several knowledgeable
docents. The Town Hall, owned and operated by the Alpine
Woman’s Club, was built in 1899 and is located at 2156 Alpine
Blvd. The two historic buildings owned and operated by the
Alpine Historical Society are the Dr. Sophronia Nichol’s
House built in 1896 and the Capt Adam Beaty house built in
1899. They are both located at 2116 Tavern Road. Just follow
the signs to the Museum.
Football fundraiser
ALPINE — Alpine Mountaineers Pop Warner is hosting a
Football Fest Fundraiser at Viejas Outlet Center, on July 17,
from 5 to 7 p.m. Come and join in for some family fun, and
stay for a free movie at the New Viejas Movies in the Park
starting at 7 p.m.
There will be great food, a Dunk Tank, a DJ, Face
Pinting, Jumper plus games to play and more! Food and Game
tickets will be sold at the event.
Historic Highway 80 fundraiser
EL CAJON —
“T-Birds, Tail Fins & Car Hops,” this is both the title and
the theme for the big party from 6 to 9 p.m. on July 12, at
The San Diego Collection, 7215 El Cajon Blvd. The event is a
fundraiser for the Historic Highway 80 so the site for the
party is a perfect choice. It’s a museum and resort featuring
antique cars, many from the era of the 50s, the same time
period when old 80 was still in use.
The party features an Italian dinner with wine and
three auctions with Dave Scott from KUSI as the auctioneer and
emcee. There will also be light entertainment, music from the
50’s and opportunities to stroll through the museum and admire
the ancient cars on display.
Tickets for the evening are $25. Proceeds will go to
the Historic Highway 80 Corporation, which uses the money to
help promote interest in the route and the towns along it. |

conducting fire abatement inspections
ALPINE — The California Department of
Forestry and Fire Protection engine crews will be randomly
inspecting structures in their jurisdiction for violation of
state and local fire laws.
In rural areas the law requires that brush be cleared at
least 100 feet around all structures. Proper clearing around
homes and buildings would save most of the homes lost in
wildfires.
BCLT spring events coming up
ALPINE — The Back Country Land Trust
will be hosting several events in June.
June 23: “Black Light Bug Night” at Wright’s Field — Join
BCLT and entomologist Michael Klein at 8:30 p.m. for a “black
light bug night” to identify insects that live in the
preserve. Please bring a flashlight and wear appropriate
footwear. Children and families encouraged, as well as kids at
heart.

Seniors can take
advantage of food distribution
BACK COUNTRY — Seniors living in the Back Country who are
60 years of age of older can take advantage of a free food
service program, which delivers 40-pound boxes of food to
local specific points in the area.
Residents are currently trying to get the word out and
collect information about senior in the area who would like to
receive a food box. The current pick-up point in the
Campo/Lake Morena area is at Lake Morena Village.

Summer tennis
classes at ACC
ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center (ACC) will be
holding summer tennis classes, beginning the week of June 18,
and ending July 31.
Classes for all age groups and player abilities will be
taught by certified teaching professional, Rene Toscano.
Special classes will be offered to teen athletes interested in
competing in high school interscholastic tennis teams.

ALPINE — Relay for Life would like to invite all cancer
survivors and their families to gather for a reception on
Monday, June 11, at 6 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center.
Come and celebrate life at a reception honoring cancer
survivors.
Information about Alpine’s second annual Relay for Life
will also be presented. There will be a light buffet and
gifts.

hosts Bunco Nite
ALPINE — Relay for Life will host a Bunco Nite at the
Alpine Elementary School on Friday, June 22, from 6:30 to 9:30
p.m.
A donation of $10 per person is encouraged and is donated
to the team of your choice. Families are invited, but children
must be at least 10 years old. Bunco is a fun game that moves
quickly as you change partners every few minutes. There are
door prizes as well as game prizes and snacks will be
available for sale.

ALPINE — The Vacation Bible School (VBS) at Bethel
Christian Assembly in Alpine is preparing for a VBS water park
adventure in a program called Make a Splash with Jesus.
It will be a week of fun and activities for children
between the ages of 3 and 12. The twisting and turning will
run from 6 to 8:15 p.m., June 18 to 22 at Bethel Christian
Assembly, 1929 Arnold Way.

Descanso library
summer activities
DESCANSO — Come and join the Descanso Library for a lot
of fun summer activities that have been scheduled.
The Summer Reading Program is about to start. On June 18, be
sure to pick up your reading logs and a good book. Thursday,
June 21, Dana Law will be coming to the Descanso Library to
share his Adventure on the Pacific Crest Trail. On June 30,
Movie under the stars will be showing, bring a pot luck item
and join us for a great movie. June 15, help make mystery
decorations for the library. On June 29, Forensics specialist
Debbie De Roma form the Ruben H. Fleet Science Center will
teach how to lift fingerprints, perform chromatography,
identify fibers and more.
Throughout the summer, there will also be plenty of
programs to keep your teens busy. On June 28, a movie night
will be hosted at the library, refreshments will be served.
DNA decoded is another presentation especially for teens,
presented by Debbie De Roma from the Ruben H. Fleet Science
Center. The summer reading finale is scheduled for July 26, at
6 p.m. Henna Tattoos will be presented by Natasha Papausek on
Aug. 4, at 11 a.m. and a Shrinky Dink Teen Craft is scheduled
for Aug. 16 at 6 p.m.
Concerts in the Park series
ALPINE — Come and join us for our Summer Concerts in
the Park, held at the Alpine Park. Food will be prepared and
sold by members of Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus and Queen of
Angels, unless otherwise noted.
The concerts and available menus are as follows: On
June 24: Ron Jermain will be playing with his “Big Band
Sound.” Boneless breast of chicken, baked potato and salad
will be served.
July 1,: Working Cowboy Band will be playing
traditional Country music, with Carne and Pollo Asada, Rice,
Beans, Tortillas and Salad.
On July 8: The Marine Corp Band will play with
Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Fresh Sweet Corn and Potato Salad,
available.
On July 15: The Pine Creek Posse will be playing
Western, Rockabilly, and Light Rock. Hot dogs, Hamburgers and
Chips will be available by Lift High The Cross Church.
On July 22: The 145th Street Deluxe Blues Band,
Lasagna, meatball, Salad and Rolls will be served for $6. July
29: The Corvettes will be playing Doo Wop and Motown, BBQ
