Support group for cancer patients, caregivers
     ALPINE — This year nearly 12,000 San Diego County residents will be diagnosed with cancer. In order to address their special needs and concerns, the American Cancer Society has established a support group for patients, survivors, caregivers and family members who live in Alpine and nearby communities. Meetings will continue throughout the year on the third Wednesday of each month.
     Anyone who has been affected by cancer, either as a patient or a family member, is invited to this group at 6:30 p.m., on the third Wednesday of the month, at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd.. MECAC summer youth program
     PINE VALLEY — The Mountain Empire Creative Arts Council presents “A Taste of Art” this summer in Pine Valley and Campo/Lake Morena.
     The summer youth program is for children K – 8th grades and will be held on Tuesdays, July10, 17, 24, 31, from 1 – 3:30 p.m.
     Classes will be held concurrently at the Pine Valley Clubhouse and the Lake Morena Campground Pavilion. The program will offer classes in Creative Writing, Music, Visual Arts, and Woodworking and will cost $3 per class or $10 for all 4 classes. Limited scholarships will be available.

Third Annual Alpine Art Festival
     ALPINE — The Southern California Center for Youth, Nature and the Arts will host the third annual Alpine Artist Festival on Saturday, July 28, at 9 a.m. at the Alpine Community Center.
     The event will feature artists’ booths, local dance groups, a community talent show, a comedy magician, a giant slide, pony rides and a petting zoo, and other surprises.

Historical society tours
     ALPINE — The Alpine Town Hall and The Alpine Historical Society buildings will be open to the public on Saturday, June 23, and Sunday, June 24, from 2 to 4 p.m.
     This is a great opportunity to go back in time and learn more about Historic Alpine from several knowledgeable docents. The Town Hall, owned and operated by the Alpine Woman’s Club, was built in 1899 and is located at 2156 Alpine Blvd. The two historic buildings owned and operated by the Alpine Historical Society are the Dr. Sophronia Nichol’s House built in 1896 and the Capt Adam Beaty house built in 1899. They are both located at 2116 Tavern Road. Just follow the signs to the Museum.

10th annual Crown Hills parade
     ALPINE — On Wednesday, July 4, Crown Hills will celebrate its 10th annual Independence Day Parade.
     The parade, which rolls through Crown Hills on Victoria Park Terrace and Gentian Way, will begin at noon, with a fly-over of antique bi-planes.
     The parade will be broadcast by Alpine’s own radio station, Lite 107.9 FM, thanks to the sponsorship of Kathie Pelletier of Prudential California Realty. Free ice cream cones will be given to children under 16, compliments of V.I.P. World of Alpine.
     Those who wish to watch the parade are invited to arrive prior to noon. Parking is available along Victoria Park Terrace only. Any questions about the parade can be directed to Shirley at 659-0562.


Summer youth program
     ALPINE — Christ The King Episcopal Church will be holding its summer youth program beginning on July 1 and runs through Aug. 18.
     Events will include crafts, games, fun and friends, weekly on Sundays from 6 to 8 p.m. for children ages 10 to 13. The program is provided free from Christ The King Episcopal Church, located at 1460 Midway Dr.

Historic Highway 80 fundraiser
    
EL CAJON — “T-Birds, Tail Fins & Car Hops,” this is both the title and the theme for the big party from 6 to 9 p.m. on July 12, at The San Diego Collection, 7215 El Cajon Blvd. The event is a fundraiser for the Historic Highway 80 so the site for the party is a perfect choice. It’s a museum and resort featuring antique cars, many from the era of the 50s, the same time period when old 80 was still in use.
     The party features an Italian dinner with wine and three auctions with Dave Scott from KUSI as the auctioneer and emcee. There will also be light entertainment, music from the 50’s and opportunities to stroll through the museum and admire the ancient cars on display.
     Tickets for the evening are $25. Proceeds will go to the Historic Highway 80 Corporation, which uses the money to help promote interest in the route and the towns along it.

CDF conducting fire abatement inspections
     ALPINE — The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection engine crews will be randomly inspecting structures in their jurisdiction for violation of state and local fire laws.
     In rural areas the law requires that brush be cleared at least 100 feet around all structures. Proper clearing around homes and buildings would save most of the homes lost in wildfires.


Seniors can take advantage of food distribution
     BACK COUNTRY — Seniors living in the Back Country who are 60 years of age of older can take advantage of a free food service program, which delivers 40-pound boxes of food to local specific points in the area.
     Residents are currently trying to get the word out and collect information about senior in the area who would like to receive a food box. The current pick-up point in the Campo/Lake Morena area is at Lake Morena Village.

Summer tennis classes at ACC
     ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center (ACC) will be holding summer tennis classes, beginning the week of June 18, and ending July 31.
     Classes for all age groups and player abilities will be taught by certified teaching professional, Rene Toscano. Special classes will be offered to teen athletes interested in competing in high school interscholastic tennis teams.

Vacation Bible school
     ALPINE — The Vacation Bible School (VBS) at Bethel Christian Assembly in Alpine is preparing for a VBS water park adventure in a program called Make a Splash with Jesus.
     It will be a week of fun and activities for children between the ages of 3 and 12. The twisting and turning will run from 6 to 8:15 p.m., June 18 to 22 at Bethel Christian Assembly, 1929 Arnold Way.

Stroller strides at Viejas
     ALPINE — Stroller Strides, a fitness class for moms to participate in with their babies, is currently holding classes at the Alpine Community Park, Monday to Friday at 8:30 a.m. On June 30, the class will also be starting at Viejas Outlet Center, at 9 a.m. in front of the fountain.
     This is an opportunity for busy moms to get out and exercise with their children. For more information one may check online at www.strollerstrides.com.

Descanso library summer activities
     DESCANSO — Come and join the Descanso Library for a lot of fun summer activities that have been scheduled.
The Summer Reading Program is about to start. On June 30, Movie under the stars will be showing, bring a pot luck item and join us for a great movie. On June 29, Forensics specialist Debbie De Roma form the Ruben H. Fleet Science Center will teach how to lift fingerprints, perform chromatography, identify fibers and more.
     Throughout the summer, there will also be plenty of programs to keep your teens busy. On June 28, a movie night will be hosted at the library, refreshments will be served. DNA decoded is another presentation especially for teens, presented by Debbie De Roma from the Ruben H. Fleet Science Center. The summer reading finale is scheduled for July 26, at 6 p.m. Henna Tattoos will be presented by Natasha Papausek on Aug. 4, at 11 a.m. and a Shrinky Dink Teen Craft is scheduled for Aug. 16 at 6 p.m.

Concerts in the Park series
     ALPINE — Come and join us for our Summer Concerts in the Park, held at the Alpine Park. Food will be prepared and sold by members of Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus and Queen of Angels, unless otherwise noted.
     The concerts and available menus are as follows: July 1: Working Cowboy Band will be playing traditional Country music, with Carne and Pollo Asada, Rice, Beans, Tortillas and Salad.
     On July 8: The Marine Corp Band will play with Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Fresh Sweet Corn and Potato Salad, available.
     On July 15: The Pine Creek Posse will be playing Western, Rockabilly, and Light Rock. Hot dogs, Hamburgers and Chips will be available by Lift High The Cross Church.
     On July 22: The 145th Street Deluxe Blues Band, Lasagna, meatball, Salad and Rolls will be served for $6. July 29: The Corvettes will be playing Doo Wop and Motown, BBQ Chicken Teriyaki, rice Pilaf, Salad, and Rolls will be $6.

Football fundraiser
     ALPINE — Alpine Mountaineers Pop Warner is hosting a Football Fest Fundraiser at Viejas Outlet Center, on July 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. Come and join in for some family fun, and stay for a free movie at the New Viejas Movies in the Park starting at 7 p.m.
     There will be great food, a Dunk Tank, a DJ, Face Pinting, Jumper plus games to play and more!  Food and Game tickets will be sold at the event.

     ALPINE — Alpine Christian Fellowship will be hosting the Avalanche Ranch Vacation Bible School, from July 23 to 27, from 9 a.m. to noon.
