SAN DIEGO — Several Alpine and Back
Country organizations will receive Community Enhancement Program
funds from the County of San Diego during Fiscal Year 2007-08.
The funding, approved June 19 in the San Diego County
Board of Supervisors 2007-08 budget, includes $3,203,000 from
Transient Occupancy Tax revenue. Although the revenue is only
from TOT money collected from lodging facilities in the
unincorporated portion of the county, organizations in
incorporated cities are eligible for funding and the Second
Supervisorial District will receive $640,000 in Community
Enhancement funding.
The Alpine Chamber of Commerce was allocated $45,000,
which matches the 2006-07 amount awarded to the chamber. The
chamber had requested $65,000 for tourism and development
economic activities.
The Historic Highway 80 Corporation, which had not
previously applied for Community Enhancement funds, was granted
$15,000. The organization had sought $25,000 for marketing and
promotion.
The Mountain Empire Historical Society asked for, and
will receive, $10,000, which equals the society’s 2006-07
allocation. The historical society will spend $3,500 to
refurbish and upgrade new exhibits in the Hinds Gallery of
Military History, $2,500 for equipment to reflect the World War
II period for its Camp Lockett exhibit, $1,500 for flyers and
handouts, $1,500 for the Hauser Canyon Fire commemoration, and
$1,000 for research and acquisition of artifacts for Camp
Lockett.
The Motor Transport Museum, which requested $13,000,
was awarded $5,500, which is also what the museum received last
year. The requested amount would have documented and recorded
the railroad easement, purchased a computer and copier for the
library, sealed the asphalt drive and parking area, installed a
canopy roof over the building entry access, and purchased
descriptive signage.
The Pacific Southwest Railway Museum will receive
$5,000. The museum, which was not funded by Community
Enhancement Program money last year, sought $25,000 to finish
concrete in the display building, install an automatic gate at
the entrance, install railing and fencing at the Campo Depot,
install lighting at the Campo Depot parking lot, and advertise.
The Alpine Historical and Conservation Society was
awarded $5,000, less than the $8,000 requested but equal to the
2006-07 grant. The society seeks to complete kitchen renovations
of the Dr. Sophronia Nichols House, provide museum landscaping,
install a sprinkler system, and regrade the parking lot.
The Alpine Women’s Club also received $5,000, identical
to its 2006-07 allocation. The group had sought $10,000 to
provide disabled access to the building.
CHIRP for Garden Wildlife, Inc., received the $5,000
amount it also obtained last year. The organization had
requested $25,000 for the Alpine Sage and Songbirds Festival and
Garden Tour, maintenance of bird and butterfly friendly garden
areas throughout Alpine, educational programs, and an
educational outreach promoting environmentally-friendly
gardening methods.
The Back Country Land Trust of San Diego County did not
receive any 2006-07 funding, but obtained $2,000 for 2007-08.
BCLT had requested $3,000 for its Celebrating the Back Country
outreach events.
The Southern California Center for Youth, Nature and
the Arts, Inc., will be provided with $2,000. The center did not
receive 2006-07 funding and had sought $3,000 for the East
County Art Festival, which was formerly known as the Alpine Art
Festival.
