GAFSC looking for
members, volunteers
ALPINE — The
Greater Alpine Fire Safe Council is looking for interested
residents who would like to take part in any of the group’s
subcommittees, as well as fill two new seats on the group’s
board.
Subcommittees will be taking on the issues of community
outreach, education, fuel management and fundraising.

Kiwanis sponsors Special Olympics
EL CAJON — All Division 31 Kiwanis
Clubs, including Alpine, are sponsoring the 2007 Special
Olympics on Saturday, March 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at
West Hills High School, 8756 Mast Blvd. in Santee. In case of
a rain, the events will be rescheduled for March 31.

events, act as buddies for the athletes (the most fun), set up
and take down the event, and serve as all-round cheerleaders

Easter Egg hunt at Viejas
ALPINE — All children age 12 and under are invited to the
county’s largest free Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday, March 31 from
12 to 4 p.m. at Viejas Outlet Center. This year’s annual
Easter Egg Hunt will feature 10,000 eggs hidden in Viejas
Outlet Center Park.
The old-fashioned Easter holiday celebration will take
place in Viejas Outlet Center Park beginning at noon with the
arrival of the Easter Bunny. The first Easter Egg Hunt will
begin at 12:30 p.m. for infants and 1-year-olds; followed by a
hunt at 1:30 p.m. for children age two to four; with five- to
eight-year olds at 2:30 p.m.; and finally the nine to
12-year-olds at 3:30 p.m. There will also be Easter fun and
games for the kids as well as free photos with the Easter
Bunny.
Music Man continues this week
ALPINE — Tickets are on sale now for this year’s Alpine
School District Musical. Always an extremely popular event,
for the past three years all of the tickets have been sold
out. Due to the popularity, there will be a limit of 25
tickets per purchaser.
The play dates this year are March 22,23, and 24. The
two Saturday nights are dinner shows with Fried Chicken and
Biscuits and Apple Cider.
Ticket prices for the show are: Thursdays and Fridays
Front Row $20, Row 2, 3 $15; Rows 4, 5, 6 $10; Rows 7 to 10
$5;Saturdays Front Row $30, Row 2, 3 $25; Rows 4, 5, 6 $20;
Rows 7 to 10 $15.
This is the 30th year of the Alpine School District
Musical.
NRA family camp coming in April
ALPINE — The Lemon Grove Rod and Gun Club will host the
National Rifle Association Family Shooting Sports Camp on
Sunday, April 1.
Participants will take part in gun safety classes, hunter
trail safety, wildlife identification, as well as one-on-one
supervised shooting. There will also be a hunting dog
demonstration and a shotgun show. Certified firearms
instructors and range safety officers will be present at all
times.
The event is free to all family members ages 6 and up.

Alpine Community Center spring
tennis camp
ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center will offer a “Spring
Tennis Camp” April 2 through 5. The four-day camp will consist
of a variety of sessions for all age groups and player
abilities.
The camp will provide youngsters with the opportunity to
learn basic tennis skills and match play.
The regular Spring tennis classes will begin April 16
with After-School programs for beginners and advanced players.

Bloodmobile coming to Alpine
ALPINE — The San Diego Blood Bank bloodmobile will
accept blood donations at an open to the public blood drive
hosted by Alpine Regional Center, 1620 Alpine Blvd., Ste.119,
on Thursday, April 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The
bloodmobile will be parked in the parking lot.
Anyone who is at least 17 years old, in good health and
weighs at least 110 pounds may be eligible to give blood. A
good meal is recommended prior to donation. Bring photo ID.

Nature hikes in the Back Country
LAKE MORENA — The San Diego Natural History Museum is
sponsoring a guided nature hike of the Pacific Crest Trail,
located at the entrance to the Lake Morena County Regional
Park on Saturday, April 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Join Tobin Barrozo, recent graduate from the Natural
History Museum’s Canyoneer program, on a guided nature tour
and learn the secrets of the local unique chaparral habitat.
Tobin will lead the hike up the hill to a geologic wonder of a
collection of granite boulders and a spectacular view of Lake
Morena. After enjoying lunch (bring your own lunch), the hike
will continue further up the hillside before heading down.
Please wear good hiking boots or shoes, hats and bring
enough water for four hours (it could be hot that day).
Because the hike is a climb up the hillside, it is considered
intermediate to advanced in difficulty. Don’t forget your
camera.

17th annual Vintage
Alpine coming in May
ALPINE — The 17th
annual Alpine Kiwanis Vintage Alpine wine tasting event will
be held again this year at Summers Past Farms on Sunday, May
6, from 1 to 4 p.m.
Vintage Alpine is a fund raising event for the Kiwanis
Club of Alpine Foundation. Tickets available now until March
24 for $40, March 25 to May 5 for $45, or $50 at the door. No
one under the age of 21 will be admitted.

Alzheimer’s caregivers support
group
ALPINE — The Alzheimer’s Association San Diego/Imperial
Chapter is offering a free support group for family caregivers
of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. Participants will
learn effective coping strategies for caregiver stress and
ways to best care for their loved ones.
The group meets the first Wednesday of each month from 2
to 3:30 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd.

Second annual Campo-Lake Morena
Round Up
CAMPO — The Campo-Lake Morena Business Association will
host the 2nd Annual Campo-Lake Morena Round-Up on Saturday,
May 5, at Eagles Wings Ranch, 1850 Lake Morena Dr. in Campo.
Gates open at 7 a.m. and opening ceremonies go at 9 a.m.
This is a fun-filled day of events such as, all day
Gymkhana, Wild Cow Milking, Ranch Roping, Bull Riding,
Versatile Ranch Horse Competition and more. There will also be
more than 25 vendors for food and western items. This is an
alcohol free, family event.

Free
guitar lessons for teens
ALPINE — A free guitar class is being offered to local
teens on Wednesday evenings at 3:30, 4:15, and 5 p.m. at the
Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd. There are three
classes available: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.
Middle and High School students are invited participate in
these free lessons.
Students need to bring their own guitar; electric and
acoustic guitars can be used for the class. The instructor is
Fr. Keith Acker, pastor of our local Alpine Anglican Church.
He has taught guitar for more than 20 years and taught the
free classes to teenagers in Alpine the last five years.

Alpine Mountaineers
2007 sign-ups
ALPINE — Alpine Mountaineer Pop Warner Football league
will be holding sign-ups beginning in February.
The Alpine Mountaineers are a Pop Warner Football League with
Six teams and Cheer Squads, ranging in age from 5 to 15. Cheer
Squads will be matched with an age appropriate football team.
Sign-ups are scheduled for March 24 from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. at Shadow Hills Elementary.
Players must have two copies of their birth certificates
and a 1-by-1 inch head shot photo. At the end of school year,
a copy of the year’s report card will be required.
Football registration is $225 for tackle football, and $150
for cheerleaders and flag team and includes coaching,
competition registration fees and Cheer Uniform.
The Mountaineers are also looking for volunteer Cheer

Historic town hall open for tours
ALPINE — The Alpine Town Hall will be open to the public
on Sunday, March 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. Due to a special event it
will not be open on Saturday, March 24, however, the Alpine
Historical Society buildings will be open on both Saturday,
March 24 and Sunday, March 25 from 2 to 4 p.m.
The Town Hall, owned and operated by the Alpine Woman’s
Club, was built in 1899 and is located at 2156 Alpine Blvd.
The Dr. Sophronia Nichol’s House was built in 1896 and the
Capt Adam Beaty house was built in 1899. They are both located
at 2116 Tavern Road. Just follow the signs to the Museum.
Annual bike rodeo and East Egg
hunt at VFW
CAMPO/LAKE MORENA — Every year the Campo-Lake Morena
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2080 hosts several events for
the community. One of the most entertaining for the kids, and
adults too, is the annual Bicycle Rodeo and Easter Egg Hunt to
be held this year on Saturday, March 31.
This year’s event includes the Easter Egg Hunt starting
at noon. The hunt will be divided into three age groups. At 1
p.m., the Bicycle Rodeo begins and is a lot of fun as the kids
— also divided by age group — compete for trophies. Each
contestant competing in the Rodeo will be given a raffle
ticket, and the winners of the raffle, one girl and one boy,
will be awarded with a brand new bicycle. The Rodeo and Egg
Hunt are free to enter, and lots of fun.
VFW Post 2080 is a member of the Campo-Lake Morena
Business Association and they are located at 301 Sheridan

Kiwanis hosts annual Easter
pancake breakfast
ALPINE — Alpine Kiwanis will hold its annual Easter
Sunday pancake breakfast on Sunday, April 8 beginning at 7
a.m.
Breakfast will be served until noon at the Kiwanis
Hall, located at Alpine Elementary School. Cost is $5 for
adults and $2 for children under 12 years.

Sylvia Martinez who served in the Angola project in 2004.
Doctors without Borders is an independent international
medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid
to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural, or
man-made disasters, or exclusion from health care in more than
70 countries. Doctors without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres
(MSF) is often one of the first humanitarian organizations to
arrive at the scene of an emergency.
April 27, 28: ACC Annual Rummage sale, 8 a.m. to 3
p.m., both days.
May 12: Christian Youth Theater Musical, “American
Pop,” at 11 a.m. Show and lunch tickets are $5.

Kiwanis Club of Alpine will walk
for MS
ALPINE — The Kiwanis Club of Alpine is sending a team,
Alpine Trailblazers, down to the Embarcadero on Sunday, April
29, to participate in the 2007 Multiple Sclerosis Walk.
Walkers have their choice of taking a 5K or 10K stroll
along beautiful San Diego Bay while raising money to help
those who suffer from Multiple Sclerosis. This is the Alpine
Trailblazers fifth year participating. They are looking for
additional team members of those who would like to pledge them
with a donation.

County library friends announce 2007 essay contest
SAN DIEGO — The Library Friends of San Diego County (LFSDC),
an umbrella organization of Friends of the Library groups of
the branches of the San Diego County Library, announces the
2007 topic for its annual essay contest for students and
adults: “How My Library Could Be Even Better.”
Entries may be submitted at any branch of the San Diego
County Library by Saturday, April 28. Essays should not exceed
500 words. Each participant is allowed one entry. Judging will
take place in two age categories: Students through grade 12,
and Adults.
The first place winner in each of the two divisions will
receive $100; second place winners $50; and third place
winners: $25 at a meeting of the Library Friends. All six
winners will also be recognized at an official, televised
meeting of the County Board of Supervisors.

7th Annual Alpine Challenge bike
ride
ALPINE — Registration is now open for the 7th Annual
Alpine Challenge bike ride, being held on Saturday, April 28.
Participants can register on-line for one of four rides
offered: the Pine Valley Ride (72 miles), the Descanso Ride
(62 miles), the 30-Mile Ride, or the 20-Mile Ride.
The event will include a post-ride lunch, microbrewery
beer garden, free massage, T-shirt, goodie bag, and raffle
prizes. A 20 percent discount is available for registration
prior to April 14.
Proceeds benefit the Rady Children’s Hospital and the
Alpine Challenge Scholarship Fund.

is holding new classes by Alpine Artisans. The classes will

ALFA has new store hours
ALPINE — The Alpine Library Friends
Association Book Store has new operating hours.
It will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5
p.m. and closed on Mondays. The store is located in The Alpine
Creek Town Center, 1347 Tavern Rd. Suite #14.
If you have not visited the bookstore yet you are missing
out on the best selections of books in the East County. There
is a large variety of books to choose from at reasonable
rates. Many books are sold for a fraction of their original
price. Everyday there are new books to choose from on the New
Arrival’s table. Wednesday is Half Price Day and patrons need
to stop in to see what is half price that day. You can also
purchase gift certificates.
All proceeds go towards supporting the Alpine Library
with new books and magazines, equipment, crafts for Story Time
programs and continuing to increase ALFA’s capital fundraising
account for a new Alpine Library.
CTN looking for local
content
SAN DIEGO — The
County is accepting applications for grants that encourage
non-profit and educational institutions to produce quality and
timely half-hour video productions. Five $10,000 grants will
be awarded through the Local Government Programming Video
Grant Program, and finished videos will be aired on CTN, Cox
channel 19, and Time Warner Channel 22.

Seniors can take
advantage of food distribution
BACK COUNTRY - Seniors living in the Back Country who are
60 years of age of older can take advantage of a free food
service program, which delivers 40-pound boxes of food to
local specific points in the area.
Residents are currently trying to get the word out and
collect information about senior in the area who would like to
receive a food box. The current pick-up point in the
Campo/Lake Morena area is at Lake Morena Village.
