County approves purchase of
new Sheriff’s station

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego County Board
of Supervisors has approved the purchase of a 1.26-acre site in
Alpine for use as a Sheriff’s station.
The supervisors’ Feb. 27 approval authorizes the
purchase of the property from Glenhaven II Family Limited
Partnership for $3,950,000.
“I was very pleased to see this action before the board
today,” said Supervisor Dianne Jacob. “A new Sheriff’s
substation in Alpine has long been a top priority of mine as
well as for the community.”
The property at 2751 Alpine Blvd. currently has a
two-story building, which was constructed in 2003 and totals
14,188 square feet. Advantages of the site include good access
to Interstate 8 from two locations and adequate parking.
The Sheriff’s Department currently utilizes a 4,678
square foot suite in the Alpine Creek Shopping Center for its
substation. The Sheriff’s Department has used that facility
since 1983, and while several renovations have added square
footage the space and parking are no longer adequate to meet
staffing and access demands.
Inadequate building security, secured storage, holding
areas, and adjacent space for expansion also necessitated a new
site, and in March 2005 the supervisors appropriated $6 million
for the long-term needs of the Alpine Department.
The new site upgrades the Alpine command from a
substation to a station. The Alpine command covers approximately
95 square miles and includes Crest, Dehesa, Blossom Valley,
Flinn Springs, and Harbison Canyon as well as Alpine. The new
station will be equipped with an emergency generator, modern
communications, and adequate area to accommodate the staging of
supplies and large vehicles.
Expected staffing within five years will be 52
full-time deputies and 25 volunteers. The current substation
houses 22 sworn staff and two administrative personnel.
The budgeted amount for the new substation also
includes an estimated $2,000,000 for the construction of
improvements once the building is purchased along with $10,400
for relocation costs and $3,800 for escrow and title insurance
costs. The new facility is expected to increase annual
maintenance, utility, and other operating costs from $115,000 to
$158,000.
