Third annual novelty dog show coming in June
     ALPINE — The third annual Novelty Dog Show to take place Saturday, June 2, at Tom C. Dyke Park, from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration begins at 8 a.m.
     Entry fees are $6 per class or $20 for four classes with Ribbons and gifts awarded to first, second, and third place in each class. Free admission to spectators.
     Proceeds from the show go toward sponsoring service dogs for San Diego people with disabilities.

Spring festivities at Granville Museum
     DESCANSO — The Granville Museum, located at 24019 Japatul Valley Rd., will be holding Spring Festivities on June 2 and 3, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Admission and parking are free. There will be free primitive camping sites, as well as a swap meet, a spinners and weavers guild craft show, a tram to the Mountain Man cabin, and on-site demonstrations.
     There will lost of food and drinks available for purchase, and all proceeds from the event will go to the museum.

San Diego Blood Bank visits
     The San Diego Blood Bank will be accepting blood donations at various open to the public blood drives in the coming weeks.
     Hosted by Mountain Empire High School, 3305 Buckman Springs Rd, Pine Valley, Thursday, June 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The blood drive will be held in the gym. All donors will be awarded a specially designed San Diego Blood Bank High School Challenge T-shirt.
     Sponsored by the Alpine Kiwanis Club. The drive will be hosted by Christ Our Savior Anglican Church, 2301 South Grade Road, Alpine, Saturday, June 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The bloodmobile will be parked in the parking lot.
     Hosted by Viejas Outlet Center, 5000 Willows Road, Alpine, Thursday, June 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The bloodmobile will be parked at the Welcome Home storefront at the west end of the outlet.
     Anyone who is at least 17 years old, in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds may be eligible to give blood. A good meal is recommended prior to donation.

Alpine Chorale performs at Boulder Oaks
     ALPINE — The Alpine Chorale presents their annual Family and Friends Spring Concert, featuring 100 Years of Broadway. The concert will be on Sunday, June 10, at 2 p.m., at the Boulder Oaks Elementary School Auditorium.

Bethel Bazaar
     ALPINE — Alpine’s Bethel Christian Assembly will be holding a special vendor expo and swap meet on Saturday, June 16, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
     Anyone who would like to sell items at the bazaar, or promote their business, is invited to rent a space at the event. Booths or displays are $60 for a large spot (2 parking spaces) and $35 for a small spot (1 parking space).
     Students from the community will be using this fundraiser to travel to the Dominican Republic. There they will be helping people living in poverty through construction projects, health care, and educational and social support services.

Third Annual Alpine Art Festival
     ALPINE — The Southern California Center for Youth, Nature and the Arts will host the third annual Alpine Artist Festival on Saturday, July 28, at 9 a.m. at the Alpine Community Center.
     The event will feature artists’ booths, local dance groups, a community talent show, a comedy magician, a giant slide, pony rides and a petting zoo, and other surprises.

Appasionata to be performed
     ALPINE — Bobby Brown, talented 17 year old student of local piano teacher David Bruce, will perform the complete Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Opus 57 by Ludwig van Beethoven (The Appassionata) in Mr. Bruce’s 24th annual Spring Recital, at Pastor Hal Rollins’ First Baptist Church of Alpine at Tavern Road and Arnold Way, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 10.
     The “Appassionata” is considered by many, the greatest piano sonata ever written. Piano duets will also be performed by Sierra Boek and Kendra Sitton who will be performing “On Our Way” by Vandall. Rachael and Ran Scherbaum will be performing “Morning” by Grieg. Gill Sascurain and Jake Thornton will be performing “Moldau” by Smetana and “Hokey Pokey.” Hokey Pokey will feature Jake Thornton performing on the saxophone. In all, more than 15 students will be performing at the recital.

MECAC summer youth program
     PINE VALLEY — The Mountain Empire Creative Arts Council presents “A Taste of Art” this summer in Pine Valley and Campo/Lake Morena.
     The summer youth program is for children K – 8th grades and will be held on Tuesdays, July10, 17, 24, 31, from 1 – 3:30 p.m.
     Classes will be held concurrently at the Pine Valley Clubhouse and the Lake Morena Campground Pavilion. The program will offer classes in Creative Writing, Music, Visual Arts, and Woodworking and will cost $3 per class or $10 for all 4 classes. Limited scholarships will be available.

Rummage sale at Good Shepherd
     ALPINE — Good Shepherd of the Hills Church will be holding its annual barn rummage sale on Saturday, June 2, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
     Among other great values, the special of the day will be a bag full of clothes for just $3. The sale will take place on the Church’s building site, which is located on Tavern Road at Oak Haven Road (one quarter mile north of Joan Mac Queen School).


BCLT spring events coming up
     ALPINE — The Back Country Land Trust will be hosting several events in June.
     June 2: National Trails Day work party and guided walk — Join the BCLT at 8 a.m. for a Trails Day work party, assisted by the APG Trails and Conservation Subcommittee, to improve the trails in Wright’s Field. Water, refreshments will be provided. Please wear a hat, work boots, sunscreen and bring work gloves if you have some. This is an opportunity for teens to receive community service credit.
     Join Linda Richards, BCLT Board member and Natural History Museum Canyoneer, at 11 a.m., for a guided walk to learn about the animals and plants in Wright’s Field Preserve‚s grassland and other habitats, and about its colorful human history. Please wear appropriate footwear; trails can be rocky in places.
     June 23: “Black Light Bug Night” at Wright’s Field — Join BCLT and entomologist Michael Klein at 8:30 p.m. for a “black light bug night” to identify insects that live in the preserve. Please bring a flashlight and wear appropriate footwear. Children and families encouraged, as well as kids at heart.

ALFA closing sale
     ALPINE — The ALFA Bookstore will be closing its present location on Saturday, June 2, and is seeking to relocate. Starting May 15, many paperbacks will be on sale outside the front door. More than 20,000 books, DVDs and videos will be available.
     ALFA hours and days are, Tuesday through Sunday – 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is located in the Alpine Creek Town Center across from the Bread Basket Restaurant. All proceeds go towards supporting the Alpine Library with new books and continuing to increase ALFA’s capital fund-raising account for a new Alpine Library.

Woman’s Club will award scholarships
     ALPINE – The Alpine Woman’s Club, through the Alpine Woman’s Club Scholarship, Preservation and Education Foundation, will award five $1,000 scholarships to deserving students in June of this year. In order to be considered for a scholarship, an application must be received no later than May 30.
     Applications are available at the Alpine Chamber of Commerce Office, the Alpine Community Center, the Alpine Library, Washington Mutual, California First Bank and the Bread Basket Restaurant. Applications may also be obtained by visiting the Alpine Woman’s Club web site, www.members.cox.net/alpinewomansclub, or by sending a request via e-mail to alpinewomansclub@cox.net.
     Recipients of the awards will be invited to attend the Alpine Woman’s Club Scholarship Award Presentation on June 21.

Seniors can take advantage of food distribution
     BACK COUNTRY — Seniors living in the Back Country who are 60 years of age of older can take advantage of a free food service program, which delivers 40-pound boxes of food to local specific points in the area.
     Residents are currently trying to get the word out and collect information about senior in the area who would like to receive a food box. The current pick-up point in the Campo/Lake Morena area is at Lake Morena Village.

Alpine History Day
     ALPINE — The Alpine History Day Celebration will be held on Saturday, June 2, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Alpine Historical Society Museum, located at 2116 Tavern Road.
     This year’s exhibit is “The History of Bee Keeping in Alpine.” There will be lots of information about early Alpine’s lucrative beekeeping industry along with a display of many beekeeping artifacts. Also, one can learn about the pioneer beekeeper in the area, John Harbison and see a replica of the Harbison Hive with was patented in 1859.
Homemade chili, salad, bread, drink and ice cream sundaes will be served for lunch for only $7.00 for adults, and 3.00 for children.

Wild in the Country fund-raiser
     ALPINE — Lions, Tigers and Bears, the only exotic Big Cat rescue facility in San Diego county, will hold its first “Wild in the Country” fund raiser on Saturday, June 9, from 1 to 5 p.m.
     The event will include entertainment, live/silent auctions, a barbecue feast, live music, line dancing lessons; and for the kids — pony rides, llama walks, and our famous petting corral. Plus the opportunity to see all the big cats up close; guests may even get a chance to feed a big cat.
     Tickets for this catered event are $80 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under, and must be purchased in advance. For more information one may call 659-8078 or visit www.lionstigersandbears.org.

Cancer survivor reception
     ALPINE — Relay for Life would like to invite all cancer survivors and their families to gather for a reception on Monday, June 11, at 6 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center. Come and celebrate life at a reception honoring cancer survivors.
     Information about Alpine’s second annual Relay for Life will also be presented. There will be a light buffet and gifts.

Vacation Bible school
     ALPINE — The Vacation Bible School (VBS) at Bethel Christian Assembly in Alpine is preparing for a VBS water park adventure in a program called Make a Splash with Jesus.
     It will be a week of fun and activities for children between the ages of 3 and 12. The twisting and turning will run from 6 to 8:15 p.m., June 18 to 22 at Bethel Christian Assembly, 1929 Arnold Way.
