Descanso library fund raiser
     DESCANSO—Friends of the Descanso Library announce a fund raiser for the library expansion project. Tickets are now available for a raffle and silent auction at the Descanso Library for $1 each or 6 for $5. Please go to the Descanso library and see the items donated for the raffle, such as the handmade quilts that are hanging on display in the library.
     The Lottery Drawing and Silent Auction bid items are to be awarded on Oct. 20 at 11 a.m. in the Descanso Library Community Room. It is not required to be present Oct. 20 to claim you Lottery items or Silent Auction award.

Creekside Quiz Night
     ALPINE — Creekside Early Learning Center will host its annual Disney Quiz Night, on Friday, Oct. 19 from 5 – 8 p.m. in the DreamCatcher Lounge at Viejas.
     CELC’s PTA and staff host this adults-only event that is made possible by the generosity of Viejas who provides the venue, hors d’oeuvres, and more. The evening includes opportunity drawings, live and silent auctions and a fast-paced competitive game of sports, music and Disney trivia. Seating is available at $15 per person or $100 for a table of eight.

English tea with an Irish flavor
     ALPINE — An English Tea with an Irish Flavor will be hosted at Christ the King Episcopal Church on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 1:30 p.m., tickets will be $15 each.
     Fine tea, sandwiches, cookies and conversation will be featured along with the talents of Harpist and Vocalist Sylvia Lorraine Hartman.

15th annual Vaquero Days
     DESCANSO — The 15th Annual Vaquero Days is scheduled for Oct. 20 and 21, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. rain or shine, at the Merrigan Ranch in Descanso.
     Admission for adults is $10, children’s admission is free. Camping is available in the meadow, (primitive conditions: Self contained with porta-potties). Proceeds benefit the Los Californios heritage Association, Alpine Amigos 4H, Mountain Empire 4H and Mountain Empire FFA.

Shadow Hills Fall Festival
     ALPINE — Shadow Hills Elementary School will be hosting its annual Fall Festival on Friday Oct. 26 from 6 to 9 p.m.
     There will be many vendor and activity booths set up, including games and goodies for all ages. Everyone is invited to attend.

BCLT native plant sale
     ALPINE — Back Country Land Trust will be holding its annual native plant sale on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Joan Mac Queen Middle School beginning at 10 a.m.
     Prior to the sale there will be a native plant talk, beginning at 9:15 a.m., discussing water-saving, beauty and wildlife attributes of native plants.
     Arrive early, as this is a ‘First Come, First Served’ event, with many plants selling out quickly.

Halloween spooktacular
     ALPINE — On Oct. 27, 30, and 31, the Alpine Community Center will be hosting a haunted Halloween Event. Come see the Spooktacular Haunted House in the Teen Center.
     This is a fun event for the whole family with a wide array of prizes and attractions. Please call for more details 445-7330.

Annual Autumn Fest
     ALPINE — “Circle The Wagons” is the theme of the Alpine Community Church’s Annual AutumnFest. The Wild West themed extravaganza will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28 at the Alpine Community Church.
     This is a fun evening of dinner, dancing, auctions and opportunity drawings. Tickets are only $40 per person and tables for 8-10 may be reserved.

Historical society field trip
     The Alpine Historical Society is going on a field trip on Oct. 28 and everyone is welcome to come.
     Experience the Harvest Fair at the Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum in Vista, see an old fashioned threshing bee, a tractor parade and gas and steam engine demonstrations. In addition, a tour of the historic Rancho Guajome Adobe house and grounds will be available.
     Meet at the Alpine Woman’s Club at 10 a.m. or meet the group in Vista at 2040 N. Santa Fe Ave., at 11:15 a.m. For more information, one may call Don Tarr at 659-1378.

Silver Tea and fashion show
     ALPINE — A Silver Tea and fashion show will be presented at the Dreamcatcher Lounge at Viejas, on Oct. 20, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
     Luncheon will be served and there will be a silent auction for the beautiful baskets and center pieces that decorate the tables. Come and join us to enjoy an afternoon of entertainment. Admission tickets are $45 and all proceeds will benefit the Alpine Community Center.

ACC Halloween party
     ALPINE – Witches and goblins, horrible space aliens and lovely fairy princesses will be visiting Alpine early this year because the Halloween Party at the Alpine Community Church in Fuller Hall is set for Oct. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m.
     A potluck dinner first will be followed by a costume parade with prizes, Halloween games, music, family fun and fellowship. The party is for every one from infants to parents, to grand parents, and all their friends and neighbors. Just bring a dish to share, and don’t forget to dress up.

Historical society annual Italian dinner
     ALPINE — The Alpine Historical Society will hold its annual Italian Feast on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 5 p.m. at the Alpine Woman’s Club, 2156 Alpine Blvd. Members, their guests and others interested in the history of Alpine are invited to attend.
     The event will start off with an Italian dinner prepared by board members. Pasta dishes, bread, salad, beverages and dessert will be served for $5 per person.
     Following the dinner, the Honorable William J. Howatt, Jr., retired judge, will present a reenactment of the famous Alpine Ranch murder trial. Judge Howatt performs historical re-enactments of trials as a hobby.

Free disaster survival workshop
     ALPINE — The Greater Alpine Fire Safe Council is presenting “Ready or Not: An Urban Survival Workshop” Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Joan Mac Queen Middle School gymnasium.
     Presenters will talk about how to survive during the first hours and days after a disaster that paralyzes emergency response workers. Topics covered include controlling panic, the importance of shelter (even in Southern California), creating drinkable water, and alternative food sources.

GUHSD career and college fair
     EL CAJON — The Grossmont Union High School District will host its fourth annual “Got Plans?” Career and College Fair for 9 to 12th grade students and parents on Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Valhalla High School.
     Admissions representatives from over 60 post secondary institutions will be on hand. Attendees may participate in up to three half-hour workshops that review options to students after high school.

High School meeting
     ALPINE — The Grossmont Union High School District will be preparing an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) to assess the environmental effects of construction and operation of a new high school in the Alpine area.
     A Public Scoping Meeting will be held at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd., on Tuesday, Oct. 30, beginning at 6:30 p.m. to give the public an opportunity to receive more information on the proposed project alternative sites, and to provide comments and suggestions on the scope of the EIR.

Senior Health Fairs
     ALPINE — ECAN and Community Partners will be holding two Senior Health Fairs. In Alpine, the fair will be held on Oct. 30, at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In Pine Valley the fair will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pine Valley Club House, 28890 Old Hwy. 80.
     Flue Shots will be available for $16, and those with medicare not handled by an HMO will be free. Please contact Jerry Barber at 445-9140 for more information.
