New fences in Wright’s Field
     ALPINE — Have you noticed the fence posts on Wright’s Field? No need for alarm.
     The Back Country Land Trust in partnership with SANDAG (the San Diego Association of Governments) are enclosing the preserve in hopes that it will minimize illegal off-road activity and dumping this winter.
     Gates will allow pedestrian and equestrian access, so that you may continue to enjoy Wright’s Field.

Shadow Hills Fall Festival
     ALPINE — Shadow Hills Elementary School will be hosting its annual Fall Festival on Friday Oct. 26 from 6 to 9 p.m.
     There will be many vendor and activity booths set up, including games and goodies for all ages. Everyone is invited to attend.
     Event postponed until further notice.

BCLT native plant sale
     ALPINE — Back Country Land Trust will be holding its annual native plant sale on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Joan Mac Queen Middle School beginning at 10 a.m.
    Event rescheduled to Saturday, Nov. 3.
     Prior to the sale there will be a native plant talk, beginning at 9:15 a.m., featuring Don Hohimer, former BCLT board member whose native plant garden was featured in this year’s CHIRP Garden Tour. He will discuss water-saving, beauty and wildlife attributes of native plants.
     Arrive early, as this is a ‘First Come, First Served’ event, with many plants selling out quickly.

Halloween spooktacular
     ALPINE — On Oct. 27, 30, and 31, the Alpine Community Center will be hosting a haunted Halloween Event. Come see the Spooktacular Haunted House in the Teen Center.
     This is a fun event for the whole family with a wide array of prizes and attractions. Please call for more details 445-7330.

Annual Autumn Fest
     ALPINE — “Circle The Wagons” is the theme of the Alpine Community Center’s Annual AutumnFest. The Wild West themed extravaganza will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28.
     This is a fun evening of dinner, dancing, auctions and opportunity drawings. Tickets are only $40 per person and tables for 8-10 may be reserved.

Second annual MECAC Holiday Faire
     PINE VALLEY — The Mountain Empire Creative Arts Council invited all artists to the second annual MECAC Holiday Faire, on Tuesday, Nov. 27, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Pine Valley Club House.
     This is a chance for all artists who are in the MECAC network to sell or show their artwork.
     Maximum of 20 artists, with six spaces reserved for artists who just want to show and not sell. Spaces are 4’ X 4’ for $10. If you need more space please purchase two spaces. Tables are included in the space fee.
     All proceeds from the space fees and drawing go towards supporting MECAC activities including our Summer Youth Art Program. MECAC is a 501 c3, non-profit organization.

Third annual fall tennis classic
     ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center will host the third annual Fall Tennis Classic. The adult doubles event will be held Nov. 30 through Dec. 2.
     The competition format will be Ladies, and Mixed-doubles. The deadline to register is Nov. 23. The public is invited to watch and support their favorite team free of charge.

Alpine Amigos looking for members
     ALPINE — Are you between the ages of 5 and 19? Would you love to learn more about farm animals and crafts? Come see what 4-H is all about.
     General Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month at the Alpine Community Center.

     ALPINE — Three events featuring local artists are coming up. Artists, musicians and poets needed for three events.

East County Triathlon Club
     Swim, bike, run: Duathalon, aquathon, triathlon. Ironman, olympic distance, sprint distance — how far can you go? Le Tigre Fitness Group, Inc. is proud to announce the formation of an East County Triathlon Club.
     The first phase of the Triathlon Club is geared towards Pre-teens and adolescents age 10-18. The Keike Tri-Club is a year round training program facilitated by USATriathlon Coaches that are sanctioned by the US Olympic Committee. The initial training program will begin in Mid-November and last 12-15 weeks culminating in a triathlon geared towards the children and teens. TriClub will provide access to a registered dietitian during the course of the training program.

Historical society field trip
     The Alpine Historical Society is going on a field trip on Oct. 28 and everyone is welcome to come.
     Experience the Harvest Fair at the Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum in Vista, see an old fashioned threshing bee, a tractor parade and gas and steam engine demonstrations. In addition, a tour of the historic Rancho Guajome Adobe house and grounds will be available.

High School meeting
     ALPINE — The Grossmont Union High School District will be preparing an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) to assess the environmental effects of construction and operation of a new high school in the Alpine area.
     A Public Scoping Meeting will be held at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd., on Tuesday, Oct. 30, beginning at 6:30 p.m. to give the public an opportunity to receive more information on the proposed project and the alternative sites, and to provide comments and suggestions on the scope of the EIR.

Senior Health Fairs
     ALPINE — ECAN and Community Partners will be holding two Senior Health Fairs. In Alpine, the fair will be held on Oct. 30, at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In Pine Valley the fair will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pine Valley Club House, 28890 Old Hwy. 80.
     Flue Shots will be available for $16, and those with medicare not handled by an HMO will be free. Please contact Jerry Barber at 445-9140 for more information.

Nature walk at Wright’s Field
     ALPINE — Wildlife biologist Michael Klein will be hosting a nature walk in Wright’s Field on Saturday, Nov. 3 beginning at 9 a.m.
     Hikers will learn about the interesting interactions of plants and animals found there and how some of them survive during these very dry years.
     Meet in the front parking lot of Joan Mac Queen Middle School. Please bring sunscreen and water.

Alpine Aglow is back
     ALPINE — Aglow is back. This international organization celebrating its 40th anniversary has returned to our beautiful mountain community. Speakers from all over the world come to touch the hearts of the people.
     Please join us on the third Friday of every month at 6:30 p.m., at 1929 Arnold Way, Alpine, (the corner of Tavern Road and Arnold Way). This program is open to adult men and women.

     ALPINE — The Alpine Writer’s Guild is in the process of organizing a writing group for teens. If you are a local teenager and have an interest in writing, please contact Lillian Fisher at 445-5537.

     ALPINE — Residents with local fruit and nut filled trees, or naturally-raised vegetables, fruits and herbs, who would like to sell their produce, are invited to call 445-5249. Please leave a message if no answer.

Support group for cancer patients, caregivers
     ALPINE — This year nearly 12,000 San Diego County residents will be diagnosed with cancer. In order to address their special needs and concerns, the American Cancer Society has established a support group for patients, survivors, caregivers and family members who live in Alpine and nearby communities. Meetings will continue throughout the year on the third Wednesday of each month.
     Anyone who has been affected by cancer, either as a patient or a family member, is invited to this group at 6:30 p.m., on the third Wednesday of the month, at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd. For reservations, please call the American Cancer Society, 682-7415 or e-mail kay.clark@cancer.org.
