Los Coches 8th grade trip
     ALPINE — While the Joan Mac Queen Middle School 2008 Washington, DC trip is completely sold out, students and parents or grandparents wishing to participate on this trip rather than being on a wait list, Holt Travel is offering immediate confirm for anyone wishing the join the Los Coches Middle School 8th grade trip which is following almost the exact same itinerary as the JMMS trip.
     Both trips are traveling during Spring Break from March 15 through 30, 2008, and will be together at the various sites for almost the entire trip. Both groups will be lead by David Holt, president of Holt Travel & Tours, the organizer and tour escort for this 8th grade trip for the past 11 years.

Some information is also available on-line at Holt Travel.com. Fundraising activities are underway; it’s possible for a student to fundraise most or all of this trip.

Evening with Elected Representatives
     ALPINE — On Thursday Oct. 4, from 6 to 9 p.m., the ninth annual Evening with the Elected Representatives will be held at Viejas DreamCatcher Lounge.
     Master of Ceremonies will be Marc Bailey, News Anchor for Fox 6. Tickets for dinner are $75 per person and Sponsorship tables available ($600 for a table of 8) ($800 for a table of 8, which includes sitting with an Elected Representative, listed in the program book and signage on the table).

Alpine/Viejas Days
ALPINE — The Annual Alpine Viejas Parade will be held Saturday, Oct. 6 at 10:am down Alpine Boulevard.
The Alpine Stagecoach Lions Club, along with the Signature Sponsor Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, have chosen the 150th Anniversary of the arrival of Overland Mail in San Diego as this year’s parade theme.
Every one is welcomed to participate in the parade or come watch. After the parade stay and vote for your Chili at the Alpine Chili Festival.

Class of 1957 Mountain Empire reunion
PINE VALLEY — A class reunion will be held Saturday, Oct. 13, for all Mountain Empire graduates from 1957, at the Pine Valley Park, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Everyone is invited to bring picnic lunches and drinks and visit with old friends.

Campo gears up
to go Hog Wild
CAMPO — Campo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2080 is gearing up for is annual Hog Wild festivities scheduled for Oct. 13. Watch for coming announcements.
There will be live music by Blue Dawg, food, drinks, raffles, a bake sale, and much more. In the meantime don't forget their first Friday Rib dinners, and third Saturday Steak Fry — profits always for a worthy cause.

English tea with an Irish flavor
ALPINE — An English Tea with an Irish Flavor will be hosted at Christ the King Episcopal Church on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 1:30 p.m., tickets will be $15 each.
Fine tea, sandwiches, cookies and conversation will be featured along with the talents of Harpist and Vocalist Sylvia Lorraine Hartman.

15th annual
Vaquero Days
DESCANSO — The 15th Annual Vaquero Days is scheduled for Oct. 20 and 21, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. rain or shine, at the Merrigan Ranch in Descanso.
Admission for adults is $10, children’s admission is free. Camping is available in the meadow, (primitive conditions: Self contained with porta-potties). Proceeds benefit the Los Californios heritage Association, Alpine Amigos 4H, Mountain Empire 4H and Mountain Empire FFA.

Silver Tea and
fashion show
ALPINE — A Silver Tea and fashion show will be presented at the Dreamcatcher Lounge at Viejas, on Oct. 20, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Luncheon will be served and there will be a silent auction for the beautiful baskets and center pieces that decorate the tables. Come and join us to enjoy an afternoon of entertainment. Admission tickets are $45 and all proceeds will benefit the Alpine Community Center.

National Alpaca Farm Day
     ALPINE — On Oct. 6, Alpaca Country Ranch in association with other East County alpaca breeders will be joining together to open their ranches to the public.
There will be spinning demonstrations, alpaca products for sale, and more. Enter a drawing to win the Farm Day gift basket, which includes alpaca products and more. One entry per family per ranch visit.

6th annual Chili Cook-off
     ALPINE — The Alpine Kiwanis Club is hosting the 6th annual Chili Cook-off on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 11-3 p.m. in the park at the Alpine Community Center.
     There is always lots of chili to taste and some creatively decorated booths to check out. This is a family friendly event.

Blackwater rally and encampment
     POTRERO — A Stop Blackwater Rally and Encampment in Potrero will be held Oct 6-7. Join this Rally in Potrero and at the gate of the proposed Blackwater West site.
     Several events will be taking place all weekend including hikes, educational sessions and music and spoken word entertainers. Camping is available Saturday night.

Descanso library fundraiser
DESCANSO—Friends of the Descanso Library announce a fundraiser for the library expansion project. Tickets are now available for a raffle and silent auction at the Descanso Library for $1 each or 6 for $5. Please go to the Descanso library and see the items donated for the raffle, such as the handmade quilts that are hanging on display in the library as well as the silent auction which include: An outstanding pastel painting by the local artist, Phebe Burnham, and a watercolor painting by Sand Diego Artist Drew Bandish.
The Lottery Drawing and Silent Auction bid items are to be awarded on Oct. 20 at 11 a.m. in the Descanso Library Community Room. It is not required to be present Oct. 20 to claim you Lottery items or Silent Auction award.

Cancer support
group formed
ALPINE — The American Cancer Society has established a support group for patients, survivors, caregivers and family members who live in Alpine and nearby communities. Meetings will continue throughout the year on the third Wednesday of each month.
Anyone who has been affected by cancer, either as a patient or a family member, is invited to this group at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd. For reservations, please call the American Cancer Society, 682-7415 or e-mail kay.clark@cancer.org.

Hiking in Wright’s Field
ALPINE — The next Alpine Planning Group Trails Subcommittee hike will be held on Oct. 18 at 4 p.m., beginning at the entrance to Wright’s Field at South Grade Road and Calle De Compadres, which is just north of the entrance to Pala Verde Ranch.
Hikers may want to bring water, hat, hiking stick, and (for those interested) a bag for trash. For more information one may contact Keli Cadenhead at 445-3955.

Creekside Quiz Night
ALPINE — Creekside Early Learning Center will host its annual Disney Quiz Night, on Friday, Oct. 19 from 5 – 8 p.m. in the DreamCatcher Lounge at Viejas.
CELC’s PTA and staff host this adults-only event that is made possible by the generosity of Viejas who provides the venue, hors d’oeuvres, and more. The evening includes opportunity drawings, live and silent auctions and a fast-paced competitive game of sports, music and Disney trivia. Seating is available at $15 per person or $100 for a table of eight.

Alpine artists on
display
ALPINE — On Saturday, Oct. 20, the Alpine Artists Association will be filling the outdoor sculpture gardens at Viejas Outlet Center with original artwork and music from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In addition to wonderful art and breathtaking locale, the Old Highway 80 Celebrations will be spilling into the Viejas Outlet Center, bringing with them, beautiful, restored classic automobiles and memorabilia of yesteryear — look for them near the artists at the center.
The Masters “Smoking in the Park,” Barbeque Competition will also tempt visitors with exotic, culinary aromas and foods, of which guests will be welcome to sample and purchase.
