Kiwanis raises money with recycling
     ALPINE — The Kiwanis Club of Alpine is helping the Ronald McDonald House of San Diego to raise money through a recycling program. There are two methods which the club is employing; collecting pull-tabs from aluminum cans, and collecting Hotels and Motels bar soap and shampoo/conditioners.
     The money is used to help occupants of the House who have sons and daughters in the The Rady Children’s Hospital that are suffering from cancer and other diseases. The soap and shampoo are also distributed to the occupants to help them with their daily needs.
     The Kiwanis Club of Alpine has so far collected 75 pounds of the pull-tabs.

Local blood drives
     The San Diego bloodmobile will be accepting blood donations at various spots in the coming weeks.
     Another open to the public blood drive hosted by Viejas Casino, 5000 Willows Road, Alpine, Thursday, Sept. 13, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The blood drive will be held at DreamCatcher at Viejas.
     Anyone who is at least 17 years old, in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds may be eligible to give blood. A good meal is recommended prior to donation.

Republican Women’s meeting
     ALPINE — Republican Women, Federated will hold its regular meeting on Monday, Sept. 17, in the Club House, 2400 Alpine Blvd.
     Refreshments served at 10:30 a.m. with the business meeting beginning at 11 a.m. The program will be: Rescue Task Force presented by Andrea Stone, the executive officer of RTF, who will talk of their recent trip on June 19 to Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC. They had a team of four, visiting WARD 57, Mission Number 1890 and then WARD 58.

Calling all photographers
     ALPINE — A meeting will be taking place on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m., at the Alpine Community Center, for all local photo enthusiasts.
     This photo club meeting will be chance for avid picture takers to talk about techniques and styles, learn about using photoshop programs for photo editing, and show off their work. The photo club is open to all ages, with or without a camera.

Tack and yard sale
     PINE VALLEY — Horse of The Sun equestrian facility in Pine Valley will be hosting a community barn, tack and yard sale on Sept. 22 and 23, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The great train robbery in Campo
     CAMPO — Come out and enjoy a little of the Wild West as it used to be. The Great Train Robbery and Dinner Theater: “Death rides the Stage” featuring the Back Country Players will be at the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo. While the event on Oct. 13 is completely sold out for this year, a full dress rehearsal is being offered on Sept. 30. Train departs promptly at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
     Be prepared to guard your belongings and loved ones as you face “The Hole in the Wall Gang.”
     Tickets for the dress rehearsal are $20 per adult, children 5-18 $10, and children under 5 are free. All proceeds benefit the Campo/Lake Morena Community. For more information please contact Randy Lenac at 478-5403 or go to PSRM.org.

Back to school night
     CAMPO — Mountain Health and Community Services is hosting a Back to School Family Night and distributing back to school supplies for our rural families on Friday, Sept. 14 at the Mountain Empire Community Center. If more supplies are received than needed, the remainder will be distributed between the Mountain Empire School sites and the Alpine Unified School District.
     Baskets for donations are located in the offices at Alpine Family Medicine and Mountain Empire Family Medicine. Money or gift card donations are also appreciated and will be used to purchase needed supplies.

VFW deep pit barbecue
     ALPINE — The Alpine VFW Post #9578, 844 Tavern Road, is having its annual Deep Pit BBQ, beef, pork and turkey on Sept. 15 from 1 to 4 p.m. Live music and a live auction to benefit The Fisher House.
     The event is open to the public. Advance tickets donation $8, and tickets at the door day of the barbecue are $10. For tickets call 445-6040.

Kiwanis community swap meet
     PINE VALLEY — The Mountain Empire Kiwanis Club will be hosting a community swap meet on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 7 a.m. to noon at Mountain Empire High School, 3291 Buckman Springs Road, in front of the main building.
     This is an opportunity to make money while cleaning out your barns and storage areas. Single vender spaces are $20 each, with set-up beginning at 6 a.m. Food will be available from 8 a.m. to noon.

Empowerment and discovery courses
     ALPINE — The Alpine Church of Spiritual Living is sponsoring two classes presented by Rev. Gay Beauregard.
     This will be an eight-week journey of empowerment and awakening to a more abundant life, beginning Thursdays, Sept. 18 thru Nov. 1, at ACSL from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
     Free Discovery Class to be held on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Alpine Church of Spiritual Living. Come and learn what the Alpine Church of Spiritual living teaches and discover if your heart and head lead you to become a member.

MECAC special speaker
     PINE VALLEY — The Mountain Empire Creative Arts Council presents a special speaker at it’s next meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
     The guest Dr. Don Adema will discuss how to achieve good health through the art of living a well-balanced life. Dr. Don, who lives in Descanso, is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and recently moved his practice from Alpine to Santee.
     MECAC fellowship and announcements will begin at 6:30 p.m. Dr. Adema’s address will begin promptly at 7 p.m.

Cowboy barbecue coming up
     ALPINE — A Cowboy Barbecue sponsored by Christ our Saviour Anglican Church, will take place Saturday Sept. 22 from 5 to 8 p.m.
     Located at the Anglican Paradise Ranch at 2301 South Grade Road, Alpine. Entertainment will be provided by "Trails & Rails" featuring Emmy Award Winner; Walt Richards. Tickets for sale now, $15 for Adults, $5 ages 6-12, age 5 and under free. For tickets call 722-1575.

Community read-in at JMMS
     ALPINE — Joan Mac Queen Middle School will host its 5th Annual Community Read-In on Thursday, Sept. 27 beginning at 5:30 p.m. with refreshments provided by the Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Indians.
     The read-in will begin at 6 p.m. Readers for this event include members of the AUSD school board, Superintendent Greg Ryan, Principals from each school site, local librarians, and students from each school
