Kiwanis raises money with recycling
ALPINE — The Kiwanis Club of Alpine is helping the Ronald McDonald House of San Diego to raise money through a recycling program. There are two methods which the club is employing; collecting pull-tabs from aluminum cans, and collecting Hotels and Motels bar soap and shampoo/conditioners.
The money is used to help occupants of the House who have sons and daughters in the The Rady Children’s Hospital that are suffering from cancer and other diseases. The soap and shampoo are also distributed to the occupants to help them with their daily needs.

Four seats left for 8th grade trip
ALPINE — There are just four seats remaining for students and parents or grandparents wishing to participate in the upcoming annual educational Washington, D.C. trip organized for the 8th grade class of Joan Mac Queen Middle School during Spring Break from March 15 through 22, 2008.

Empowerment and discovery courses
ALPINE — The Alpine Church of Spiritual Living is sponsoring two classes presented by Rev. Gay Beauregard.
This will be an eight-week journey of empowerment and awakening to a more abundant life, through Nov. 1, at ACSL from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Free Discovery Class to be held on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Alpine Church of Spiritual Living. Come and learn what the Alpine Church of Spiritual living teaches and discover if your heart and head lead you to become a member.

Town hall meeting about Sunrise alternatives
CAMPO — There will be a Town Hall Meeting regarding the Sunrise Powerlink coming through Campo. This meeting will be held on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Lake Morena Community Church.
The California Public Utility Commission needs to know that the Back Country does not want or need hundreds of 150-foot towers carrying 500 Kilovolts of electricity to Northern San Diego county customers running through the heart of our communities. Representatives from SDG&E, the CPUC and the BLM have all been invited to attend.

Community read-in at JMMS
ALPINE — Joan Mac Queen Middle School will host its 5th Annual Community Read-In on Thursday, Sept. 27 beginning at 5:30 p.m. with refreshments provided by the Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Indians.
The read-in will begin at 6 p.m. Readers for this event include members of the AUSD school board, Superintendent Greg Ryan, Principals from each school site, local librarians, and students from each school

Alpine/Viejas Days
ALPINE — The Annual Alpine Viejas Parade will be held Saturday, Oct. 6 at 10 a.m. down Alpine Boulevard. The boulevard will be closed to traffic from Tavern Road to South Grade Boulevard between 9 a.m. and noon.
The Alpine Stagecoach Lions Club, along with the Signature Sponsor Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, have chosen the 150th Anniversary of the arrival of Overland Mail in San Diego as this year’s parade theme.

Cancer support group formed
ALPINE — The American Cancer Society has established a support group for Cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and family members who live in Alpine and nearby communities. Meetings will continue throughout the year on the third Wednesday of each month.
Anyone who has been affected by cancer, either as a patient or a family member, is invited to this group at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd. For reservations, please call the American Cancer Society, 682-7415 or e-mail kay.clark@cancer.org.

 

Historic building open house
ALPINE — The Alpine Town Hall will be open to the public on Saturday Sept. 29 from 2 to 4 p.m., and the The Alpine Historical Society buildings will be open on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 30 from 2 to 4 p.m.
This is a great opportunity to go back in time and learn more about Historic Alpine from several knowledgeable docents. The Town Hall was built in 1899 and is located at 2156 Alpine Blvd. The two historic buildings are the Dr. Sophronia Nichol’s House built in 1896 and the Capt Adam Beaty house built in 1899. They are both located at 2116 Tavern Road. Just follow the signs to the Museum.

The great train robbery in Campo
CAMPO — Come out and enjoy a little of the Wild West as it used to be. The Great Train Robbery and Dinner Theater: “Death rides the Stage” featuring the Back Country Players will be at the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo. While the event on Oct. 13 is completely sold out for this year, a full dress rehearsal is being offered on Sept. 30. Train departs promptly at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Be prepared to guard your belongings and loved ones as you face “The Hole in the Wall Gang.”
Tickets for the dress rehearsal are $20 per adult, children 5-18 $10, and children under 5 are free. All proceeds benefit the Campo/Lake Morena Community. For more information please contact Randy Lenac at 478-5403 or go to PSRM.org.

Alpine Amigos looking for members
ALPINE — The Alpine Amigos 4-H will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 2, and is looking for new members, between the ages of 5 and 19, who would like to learn more about farm animals and crafts.

Photo Club meeting
ALPINE — The newly formed Alpine Photographer Club will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center.
Assignments for this month are photos of important people in your life (preferably not relatives), and photos of wheels. Computers will be on hand to download or scan your photos.

Evening with Elected Representatives
ALPINE — On Thursday Oct. 4, from 6 to 9 p.m., the ninth annual Evening with the Elected Representatives will be held at Viejas DreamCatcher Lounge.
Master of Ceremonies will be Marc Bailey, News Anchor for Fox 6. Tickets for dinner are $75 per person and Sponsorship tables available ($600 for a table of 8) ($800 for a table of 8 which includes sitting with an Elected Representative, listed in the program book and signage on the table).

Class of 1957 Mountain Empire reunion
PINE VALLEY — A class reunion will be held Saturday, Oct. 13, for all Mountain Empire graduates from 1957, at the Pine Valley Park, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Campo gears up to go Hog Wild
CAMPO — Campo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2080 is gearing up for is annual Hog Wild festivities scheduled for Oct. 13. Watch for coming announcements.
There will be live music by Blue Dawg, food, drinks, raffles, a bake sale, and much more. In the meantime don't forget their first Friday Rib dinners, and third Saturday Steak Fry — profits always for a worthy cause.

Annual Chili Cook-off
ALPINE — The Alpine Kiwanis Club is hosting the 6th annual Chili Cook-off on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 11-3 p.m. in the park at the Alpine Community Center.
There is always lots of chili to taste and some creatively decorated booths to check out. This is a family friendly event.
