Kiwanis raises money with recycling
     ALPINE — The Kiwanis Club of Alpine is helping the Ronald McDonald House of San Diego to raise money through a recycling program. There are two methods which the club is employing; collecting pull-tabs from aluminum cans, and collecting Hotels and Motels bar soap and shampoo/conditioners.
     The money is used to help occupants of the House who have sons and daughters in the The Rady Children’s Hospital that are suffering from cancer and other diseases. The soap and shampoo are also distributed to the occupants to help them with their daily needs.

18th Annual Sycuan Pow-wow
     EL CAJON — Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Indians will be hosting its Traditional Gathering and 18th Annual Pow-Wow on Sept. 7-9.
     There will be up prizes, a Men’s Bird Dance for all ages, Women’s Bird Dance, and Hand Drum Contest, as well as Indian Arts & Crafts, Indian Food, and a Flag Ceremony will be on Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m.

Local blood drives
     The San Diego bloodmobile will be accepting blood donations at various spots in the coming weeks.
     An open to the public blood drive hosted by Wal-Mart, 13487 Camino Canada, El Cajon, on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The bloodmobile will be parked in the parking lot.
     Another open to the public blood drive hosted by Granite Hills High School, 1719 E Madison Ave., El Cajon, Wednesday, September 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The blood drive will be held in the gym.
     Another open to the public blood drive hosted by Viejas Casino, 5000 Willows Road, Alpine, Thursday, Sept. 13, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The blood drive will be held at DreamCatcher at Viejas.
     Anyone who is at least 17 years old, in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds may be eligible to give blood. A good meal is recommended prior to donation.

Coffee with Constituents
     ALPINE — On Friday, Sept. 14, Second District Supervisor Dianne Jacob is inviting members of the community to “Coffee with Constituents,” at the Bread Basket, to give an update on county issues and to “hear any ideas, problems or concerns” regarding county government.
     If you would like to hear about the direction we are heading in East County and/or would like your concern heard, put this date on your calendar and stop by at 8:30 a.m. to the Bread Basket, at 1347 Tavern Road.

Back to school night
     CAMPO — Mountain Health and Community Services is hosting a Back to School Family Night and distributing back to school supplies for our rural families on Friday, Sept. 14 at the Mountain Empire Community Center. If more supplies are received than needed, the remainder will be distributed between the Mountain Empire School sites and the Alpine Unified School District.
     Baskets for donations are located in the offices at Alpine Family Medicine and Mountain Empire Family Medicine. Money or gift card donations are also appreciated and will be used to purchase needed supplies.

VFW deep pit barbecue
     ALPINE — The Alpine VFW Post #9578, 844 Tavern Road, is having its annual Deep Pit BBQ, beef, pork and turkey on Sept. 15 from 1 to 4 p.m. Live music and a live auction to benefit The Fisher House.
     The event is open to the public. Advance tickets donation $8, and tickets at the door day of the barbecue are $10. For tickets call 445-6040.

Cowboy barbecue coming up
     ALPINE — A Cowboy Barbecue sponsored by Christ our Saviour Anglican Church, will take place Saturday Sept. 22 from 5 to 8 p.m.
     Located at the Anglican Paradise Ranch at 2301 South Grade Road, Alpine. Entertainment will be provided by “Trails & Rails” featuring Emmy Award Winner; Walt Richards. Tickets for sale now, $15 for Adults, $5 ages 6-12, age 5 and under free. For tickets call 722-1575.

The great train robbery in Campo
     CAMPO — Come out and enjoy a little of the Wild West as it used to be. The Great Train Robbery and Dinner Theater: “Death rides the Stage” featuring the Back Country Players will be at the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo on Oct. 13. The train departs promptly at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
     Be prepared to guard your belongings and loved ones as you face “The Hole in the Wall Gang.” A sit down dinner will be served at the Railroad Museum following the Train ride.
     Tickets are $50 each and group tables for ten are available for $500. There will be a no-host bar for adults only. All proceeds benefit the Campo/Lake Morena Community. For more information please contact Randy Lenac at 478-5403.
 

Alpine youth theater needs actors
     ALPINE — Alpine Youth Theater needs actors for 16 parts for the three-act, comedy/farce Boarding House Reach. Actors between the ages of 12-18 are needed for the production.
     Auditions begin on Sunday, Sept. 9, between 4-6 p.m. at Christ Our Savior Anglican Church.
     For more information please call 579-1902 ahead of time. The comedy will be performed for the general public in January 2008 at the Alpine Women’s Club. Everyone is welcome to audition.

Lavender focus of CHIRP meeting
     ALPINE — CHIRP Garden Club will host a program by a noted author and herbalist at their upcoming meeting, set for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at Alpine Community Church’s Fuller Hall, 2225 Victoria Drive.
     Karen England, past president of Vista Garden Club and a current board member of the International Herb Association, will talk about one of the most beloved herbs of all times — lavender. Various herbal products will also be available for purchase after the program.

Teen guitar lessons
     ALPINE — Free guitar lessons for teenagers are being offered to Middle and High School students. A new Beginner Class starts Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 3:30pm. Classes are held at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd.
     The class is offered by FreeTeenGuitarClass.com as a service to the youth of Alpine sponsored by AlpineAnglican.com and the Alpine Community Center.

8th grade trip meeting
     ALPINE — ALPINE - On Thursday, Sept. 13, at 6:30 pm at the Alpine Elementary School auditorium, an information/registration meeting will be held for Joan Mac Queen eighth-grade students and parents regarding next year’s Annual Educational East Coast Tour.
     This eight-day trip will take place during Spring Break, March 15 through 22, 2008. Students and parent chaperones will see history brought alive in places such as Jamestown Settlement, Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, and Thomas Jefferson’s home at Monticello as well as the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., Arlington National Cemetery, and New York City.
     Payments will be accepted after the presentation to reserve a spot on the trip. Because good citizenship is important on this trip, students’ most recent JMMS Report Card will be required in order to register a student.

Kiwanis swap meet
     PINE VALLEY — The Mountain Empire Kiwanis Club will be hosting a community swap meet on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 7 a.m. to noon at Mountain Empire High School, 3291 Buckman Springs Road, in front of the main building.
     Single vender spaces are $20 each, with set-up beginning at 6 a.m. Food will be available from 8 a.m. to noon.

Calling all photographers
     ALPINE — A meeting will be taking place on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m., at the Alpine Community Center, for all local photo enthusiasts.
     This photo club meeting will be chance for avid picture takers to talk about techniques and styles, learn about using photoshop programs for photo editing, and show off their work. The photo club is open to all ages, with or without a camera.

Campo gears up to go Hog Wild
     CAMPO — Campo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2080 is gearing up for is annual Hog Wild festivities scheduled for Oct. 13. Watch for coming announcements.
     There will be live music by Blue Dawg, food, drinks, raffles, a bake sale, and much more. In the meantime don’t forget their first Friday Rib dinners, and third Saturday Steak Fry — profits always for a worthy cause.

     ALPINE — Are you between the ages of 5 and 19? Would you love to learn more about farm animals and crafts? Come see what 4-H is all about.
