ALFA bookstore
     ALPINE — The Alpine Library Friends Bookstore has recently received several donations of like-new books, which are perfect for summer reading on your vacation, or staycation. They include hard-back mysteries, New York Times bestseller list soft-backs, and several current biographies, as well as children’s books and videos for the whole family to share.
     The bookstore, located at 2554 Alpine Blvd. is open Wednesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come find a bargain and support your local library.

Battery disposal
     DESCANSO — Don’t know what to do with your old household batteries? You can now recycle them at the Descanso Library.
     Please put them in a plastic bag and drop them off in our Battery Recycle Box inside the library. Please do not bring lithium ion batteries.

Back-to-school tennis programs
     ALPINE — Alpine Community Center (ACC) Fall Tennis Classes are coming up. Fall tennis classes for youth and adult players begin after the Labor Day holiday weekend.
     The youth programs are scheduled during weekday afternoons, and adult classes with be offered for both morning and evening sessions. Classes are offered for all age groups and ability levels.
     According to teaching professional, Rene Toscano, an added specialty program will be offered to student athletes aspiring to try-out for the upcoming tennis season within the Grossmont Unified High School District league.

Canyonfolk concert
     ALPINE — Canyonfolk House Concerts will be hosting the comedic singing songwriting duo Berkley Hart on Saturday, Aug. 16 at 8 p.m. Suggested donation $20.
     This will be an outdoor show so bring a chair. The doors will open at 7 p.m. for the dinner/dessert potluck buffet. If you would like to contribute a dish it would be greatly appreciated but not mandatory. There will be coffee, bottled water, tea, beer, and wine.

31st annual Descanso blood drive
     DESCANSO — The 31st annual Descanso community blood drive will take place on Sunday, Aug. 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Descanso Town Hall.

Antique clothing speaker at potluck
     ALPINE — The quarterly potluck luncheon meeting of the Alpine Historical Society will be held on Sunday, Aug. 17 at 1 p.m. at the Alpine Woman’s Club, 2156 Alpine Blvd.
     Sue Wheelington will be displaying and discussing her unique collection of antique clothing. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to see the Wheelington home, which has been on the Sage and Songbird Home Tour as well as the Woman’s Club Christmas Tour, know we are in for a real treat.

Breaking Chains Ministry
     ALPINE — Steven Cass founder of Breaking Chains Ministry will speak this month. This ministry is saving lives, rescuing girls from 7-18 from a life of prostitution and slavery at our back door Tijuana, Mexico.
     Please join us Friday, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. 1729 Arnold Way (Bethel Christian Church). Everyone is welcome and encouraged to bring guests. Aglow is a non-denominational organization.

Swimming lessons
     EL CAJON — Grossmont Union High School District offers swimming lessons throughout the summer.
     Lessons are offered at Santana HS, El Capitan HS, Monte Vista HS and Montgomery Middle School (across from Granite Hills HS), charge is $20 (ages 7-17) and $30 (ages 3-5) for two weeks of lessons.

GHHS Class of ‘78
     SAN DIEGO — The Granite Hills High School Class of 1978 will celebrate its 30-year reunion from Friday, Sept. 5, through Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Hyatt Manchester Hotel in San Diego.
     Ticket prices are $110 per person.
     The Class of ‘78 is seeking local vendors to donate door prizes, and is also seeking contact information for lost classmates. If you are a local merchant who would like to donate goods or services, or if you know the whereabouts of any 1978 Granite Hills graduates, we want to hear from you.

ALPS Awards
     ALPINE—The 14th annual Alpine Leadership Awards will take place Thursday, Sept. 11, from 6 – 9 p.m. at the Viejas DreamCatcher Lounge.

Bingo and poker fund raiser
     ALPINE — The Micah Retz Foundation presents a bingo and poker fund raising extravaganza in Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Viejas Dreamcatcher Lounge.
     The event is for adults only, ages 21 and up. Tickets are $20 per person, and entry price includes unlimited non-alcoholic drinks, entry to poker tournament and bingo, with prizes for winners. Entertainment will be provided by DJ JustOne and Magic Show. There will also be a raffle and silent auction.
     All proceeds from the event will help support Micah and his children. On June 1, Micah a 27 year Alpine resident and single father of three, injured himself while diving at Cedar Creek Falls, in Ramona. He was flown to Palomar Medical Center and was declared a quadriplegic upon admission. He is currently undergoing extensive medical treatment. Due to his physical, mental and spiritual strength, he has already shown movement in the arms and has sensation in his legs. The family is trying to raise enough money to cover medical expenses, take care of his children, and send him to a promising rehabilitation center. Donations are also being accepted at any Washington Mutual bank, benevolent account under Micah Retz.

Arts festival meeting
     ALPINE — The Southern California Center For Youth Nature & The Arts (CYNA) will host its 4th Annual East County Art & Performing Arts Festival at the Alpine Community Center on Oct. 25. Special focus will be on area students’ live performances and awarding prizes for student art in this year’s Calendar Art Contest.
     The public is invited to contribute event ideas at an organizational meeting on Aug. 21, from 6-7 p.m. at Alpine Academy, 2549 Alpine Blvd. For more information, contact Stephanie Wells at 729-9168 or simply attend the meeting.

Stoney’s kids birthday party
     EL CAJON — The Stoney’s Kids Organization will celebrate efforts in supporting East County youth at Sycuan Resort on Thursday, Aug. 21, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
     The community is invited to partner with Stoney’s Kids in this fund raising effort by attending this annual Birthday Party. No gifts or entry fee are required, just good old cash, checks or credit cards for the fantastic live and silent auctions!
     Over 98 percent of donated funds go directly to East County children’s programs. Your support makes a difference, so please find a way to participate.

Wildfire preparation assistance
     ALPINE — Greater Alpine Fire Safe Council are hosting a series of Free Community Chipper days throughout Alpine.
     On Saturday, Aug. 24 and Saturday Sept. 27, Viejas Properties is hosting a chipping day in eastern Alpine at 5221 Willows Rd. All of these events will begin at 8 a.m. and chipping will cease at 1 p.m. promptly. On chipper days, residents are invited to call 244-6093 for estimated wait times.
     Participants must show proof of Alpine area residency and are responsible for transporting materials to the chipping site. Dumping in advance is not allowed, and materials must be free of dirt, rocks, construction debris and other trash. No brush from businesses or professional landscapers will be accepted.

Collections for Rady’s Children’s Hospital
     ALPINE — Alpine residents have continued to respond to requests for soaps and shampoo for the Ronald McDonald house. They now have plenty of soap and shampoo. They could use toothbrushes, men’s and woman’s white socks and hairbrushes, and under garments. Ronald McDonald House, next to the Rady's Children’s Hospital is always in need of these donations.
     Ronald McDonald House houses families who have critically ill children in Rady's Children’s Hospital.
     Alpine resident and Kiwanian, Dick Rabell began an effort last year, collecting and donating these items to Ronald McDonald House and they are very happy with Alpine’s collection efforts. Items can be bagged and dropped off at The Alpine Sun office.

7th Annual Chili Festival
     ALPINE — The Alpine Kiwanis will host the 7th Annual Chili Festival on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center Park, following the Viejas Day Parade.

     Benefits from the event will go to the Alpine Community Center. Along with the chili cook off, there will be a live band, beer garden, barbecue, motorbike and car Show, ice cream, sodas and fun for all.
