EL CAJON — The preliminary hearing for
the motorist accused of killing Alpine resident Edward Costa
while he was riding his bicycle was delayed from December 23 to
January 21 because it was so close to Christmas and some
witnesses may not have been available.
Travis Chris Weber, 44, of East County, agreed to the
delay before El Cajon Superior Court Judge Patricia Cookson on
Dec. 18. Weber has pleaded not guilty to all charges, which
include gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, hit and
run, and several counts of drunk driving in separate incidents.
Costa, 30, was riding in the bicycle lane around 4:50
p.m. on Dec. 2 on eastbound Alpine Boulevard and west of East
Victoria Drive, which is near the sheriff’s Alpine substation.
The truck that Weber allegedly drove hit the bicycle, causing
Costa to be thrown about 50 feet. The truck ran over the bicycle
and took off.
Weber was arrested Dec. 4 after witnesses saw a man
driving a damaged white truck across the street from an ongoing
candlelight vigil that was being held for Costa. Weber was
arrested at the Liars Club, and his blood/alcohol level was
registered at .14, said a prosecutor. The legal limit is .08.
If he is convicted of all charges, Weber faces
20-years-to-life in prison said Deputy District Attorney Gordon
Davis. Weber had been jailed on $102,500 bail, but Davis
persuaded Cookson to raise his bail to $1 million at his
arraignment on Dec. 9.
Weber has been moved to the George Bailey Detention
Facility where he remains on $1 million bail.
